*What is marking tools?
Marking tools are used to transfer the pattern symbols onto the fabric. It is essential to
transfer these symbols for correct fitting and sewing.
Fabric Marking Tools:
1. Tracing wheel is available in a serrated or smooth edge. The serrated edge is
used to make a dotted link marking in most fabrics. The smooth edge makes a
solid line marking and is used for delicate fabrics such as silk and chiffon.
2. Dressmaker’s carbon/tracing paper is used to transfer the tracing wheel’s line to
the wrong side of the fabric. Select a color close to your fabric which is visible
enough to see.
3. Tailor’s chalk can be used to mark directly onto the fabric. It does not need
sharpening like a chalk pencil. Great for dark, heavy fabrics where a traditional
water soluble marking pen may not appear.
4. Chalk pencil is filled with chalk at one end of the pencil and a brush at the other
end to remove chalk marks.
5. Seam ripper has sharp, curved edge for cutting seams open and a point for
picking out threads. Can also be used for slashing machine-worked buttonholes.
Use ripper carefully to avoid accidental cutting of fabric.
6. Thread cutter a devices which are designed to cut threads into fasteners, pipes,
and other objects.
7. Thimble is a small pitted cup worn on the finger that protects from being pricked
or poked by a needle while sewing.
F. Developing mastery
(Formative Assessment) - Identify marking tools used in pattern drafting.
G. Finding practical application of Why tools, materials and equipment are very important used in sewing?
the concepts and skills in daily
living - It is very important to know the right tools in sewing. For a successful and professional
looking sewing project, the right set of tools is essential. Without them, you’ll have a hard
time finishing your project with ease. Good quality tools are also important, especially for
the sewing.
-How would you apply this concept in your daily living?
Studying the different tools, materials, and equipment in sewing it is the best way to
familiarize and memorize their uses and functions because wherever you are you can use
it especially when you are inside the school because it plays a vital role throughout
everybody’s life, for example, when we encounter any kind of problem such as seams
need to be repaired, hems need to be shortened, and buttons need to be fastened in
place knowing how to sew is useful knowledge, being able to sew enables us to make the
most out of existing items that need minor repairs for a longer life span. Sewing is another
way to save money on clothing that you make yourself.
H. Making generalizations -To summarize….
Tools, materials and equipment are essential to pattern construction and sewing a
garment. The uses and function of each tool depend upon the construction of pattern and
the garment. Using different tool should properly apply in any activities either for drafting,
marking and sewing.
