Storm Drainage System

The document discusses stormwater drainage design. It explains that stormwater drainage systems are designed to drain excess rain and groundwater from impervious urban surfaces into streams, rivers, or oceans. The design of storm drainage systems requires understanding hydrologic and hydraulic principles to collect and dispose of runoff within budget constraints. A proper design includes both a primary storm sewer system to handle relatively frequent runoff events, and a secondary roadway system to convey larger flows exceeding the primary system's capacity, up to a 100-year flood event. Failure to adequately design both systems can result in flooding and damage.

Storm Management

 The attempt to limit rainwater runoff into streets, open ground and other

locations while also improving water quality.

 The process of controlling the stormwater runoff that comes primarily from

impervious surfaces like parking lots, driveways, and rooftops.

Urbanization

 Characterized by development of habitats and associated infrastructure facilities

required for economic and social activities necessary for livelihood of growing

population in the area

 Brings changes in land use – with construction of buildings, roads, parks and other

facilities, and increases supply/ release of water

 Natural hydrological processes are affected

Urban Storm Drainage

In urban settings, water cannot soak through pavement and rooftops like it can into the

soil. As a result, cities have larger amounts of stormwater runoff than forests and fields do.

The stormwater then, drains out to the smaller pipes that connect to larger stormwater

pipes, and that finally connects to oversize drains or pipes that transport the water to the

outfall points such as streams, creeks rivers and/or ocean.

Stormwater drainage

A storm water drainage, storm sewer (US), surface water drainage/sewer (UK), is

designed to drain excess rain and ground water from impervious surfaces such as paved

streets, car parks, parking lot, footpaths, sidewalks, and roofs. It is collaborated with the

environment, channeling, attenuating, and discharging stormwater through natural

features like streams lakes rivers or the ocean.

STORM DRAINAGE DESIGN

• Although the design of a storm drain system entails many conventional procedures, the

design also requires engineering judgment. The proper design of any storm drainage

system requires accumulation of basic data, familiarity with the project site, and a basic

understanding of the hydrologic and hydraulic principles and drainage policy associated

with that design.

The development of a storm drain design requires a trial-and-error approach:

1. Analyze a tentative storm drain system.

2. Compare the system to design criteria.

3. Evaluate the system economically and physically.

4. Revise the system if necessary.

5. Analyze the revised system.

6. Make the design comparisons again.

7. Repeat the process until a storm drain system has been developed that satisfies the

technical function of collecting and disposing of the runoff within budgeted

allowances.

• The hydraulic designer must establish design parameters and criteria, decide component

location and orientation, determine appropriate design tools, and ensure comprehensive

documentation.

• Of major importance in the design of urban storm drainage facilities is the realization that

all storm drainage systems are comprised of two separate and distinct systems, namely the

Primary System (storm sewer) and the Secondary System (roadway).

• The primary system consists of a carefully designed storm drain with capacity to handle

runoff for a relatively high frequency (e.g., 5–year event).

• The secondary system is the conveyance of storm water when the primary system is

inoperable or inadequate. This system usually accommodates flow exceeding the primary

system’s design flow up to the 100–year event.

• The lack of a properly designed secondary system often leads to flooding causing severe

damage.
