Writing Assignment Task 5 - Nixon Halim

The document discusses whether the Global Englishes paradigm is the most appropriate approach for developing English textbooks for Indonesian learners. It outlines a 5-paragraph essay arguing that the GE paradigm is the best fit for the Indonesian context for several reasons. First, English has become the main global lingua franca. Second, Indonesian textbooks should consider the country's multiculturalism and position within Kachru's three circles of English. Third, textbooks should address learners' cultural backgrounds. Fourth, a GE approach avoids native-speakerism and considers cultural diversity. Fifth, culture cannot be avoided in English teaching, and intercultural understanding is important. The best part provides expert evidence; improvement involves including the author's teaching

Thesis statement: I strongly believe that the Global Englishes paradigm of EFL is the most
appropriate for Indonesian learners in Indonesian context for developing an English
textbook.

Body Paragraph 1
a. Argument
The impact of English has changed it as the first global lingua franca where English is
the most widely spoken and strong language in the modern world. International
language policies also study about it. Because of that reason, providing an English

Body Paragraph 2
a. Argument
In order to be fully useful for the Indonesian learners the English textbooks should
consider the geopolitical context of globalization and contextualized in the three
circles, namely the inner circle, outer circle, and expanding process because Indonesia
is a multicultural nation where the learners’ mother tongue is not English.

aspect are those two aspects that unable to be avoided in English teaching. Moreover, in

awareness of cultural equality and equitability. Teachers and students must also pay
attention to cultivation an intercultural understanding to appreciate the local wisdom
and address the global culture from a balanced and holistic perspective.

The best part of the essay is when the writer mentions that Adopting the critical pedagogy,
many research findings are more likely to uncover that cultural hegemony is a hidden
agenda in EFL textbooks. Although the textbook has extensively included local culture in
the form of the eight aspects by using Byram’s instrument and also presents other cultures,
such as target language culture and global culture, to foster intercultural conversation
skills, Ariawan (2020) found that primordialism and nationalism monopolize the cultural
dimensions with 28.05% of overall components. (Paragraph 3). Moreover, the best part is
when he put the expert opinions research data along the way.

According to my knowledge, the writer should also provide the evidences (included
data/observation sheet) in order to show his personal experience of more than ten years of
working experience at the national school with multicultural learners, most of the students
are likely more engaged in instructional practices by using GE-oriented textbooks rather
than the native-speakerism approach (Paragraph 1)
