A WOMAN WARRIOR’S STORY
Nearly a year after COVID-19 restrictions
had been put in place Mari, a Marine Corps
veteran found herself struggling to keep
afloat and reached out for assistance.

Throughout the first year of the pandemic,

Mari had managed to juggle all of her
commitments as a master’s student, an
intern, and an employee. By the second
year however, she recognized she was
increasingly stressed amid her many
responsibilities and with the continued
pressure of the pandemic.

As a full-time MSW student, Mari was

completing an unpaid internship for
her degree and also worked to support
her basic needs. Balancing school, her
internship and employment, Mari began to
face burn out. Afraid she might fall behind
in school and financially, Mari reached out
to FFWW. Mari received rental assistance
and household goods to ease her financial
stress and allow her to focus on her studies.

Mari, incredibly grateful for the assistance

she received shared:

“Rooted in our military training is that we do everything for ourselves; (asking for and receiving)
help is weakness. I realized I needed to ask for help before everything fell apart though, because
I had worked too hard to let a lack of resources stop me from pursuing my goals. Thank you for
helping me stay on track. I wouldn’t have been able to graduate on time had it not been for your
generous assistance”

Our programs prevent homelessness and enhance the personal and economic wellbeing of our
women veteran community. We intervene during the critical moments that significantly impact
a veterans’ trajectory, just like Mari’s. Mari has since graduated with her master’s degree in social
work and has begun full time employment serving her community as a hospice social worker.

“ I was devastated because as a veteran, I didn’t think it would be so hard to ask

for help. I’d heard about Foundation for Women Warriors but didn’t want to get my
hopes up as I had been turned away from other organizations, which was a shock to
me because I have an honorable discharge.
Happily, I heard back the next day from FFWW and after submitting my information
was approved for assistance...I can’t express enough how appreciative I am that
they were able to assist me!
Thank you so much to the organization and donors who were there for me!

CONNECT WITH COMMUNITY

Connect with Community is a series of professional development and financial workshops

where veterans learn vital skills to assist with the transition into the civilian workforce and begin
to expand their professional networks.

100
PARTICIPANTS
not only gained access to and increased
their knowledge of local community,
employment, and academic resources,
but also built productive relationships
with one another.

I appreciated the FFWW, where I have been able to meet
some awesome veterans, build my network, as well as empower
myself to be a leader and mentor of others.

WAREHOUSE DISTRIBUTION

Through our two warehouse locations in Vista and North Hollywood, California, women
veterans are provided with necessities such as new and unused baby supplies (diapers,
formula, car seats, cribs, etc.), clothing and other critical household items to reduce their
monthly costs and to meet their families most basic of needs. 289 women veterans and
children received $72,585 in critical goods.

100%
of survey participants reported that receiving these cost-free
items allowed them to reduce their monthly spending and
reallocate their earnings to rent, groceries, and other costs
while they’ve worked to get their finances back on track
during COVID.

CELEBRATING OUR RICH HISTORY
Women’s history is truly our history, and at every turn of progress in our country, women
played an integral role. During our year-long Centennial Anniversary, we provided free
documentary screenings that showcased the historical challenges and achievements
of women veterans and service-women.

During these screenings

we touched

2,000
households and had over

5,100
viewers across the country.

“ This documentary was excellent! It is so

important to share the stories of these women
who made such a significant contribution
during WWII. Thanks again for sharing this
outstanding documentary.
