technology and explained their importance to the
nation; and
 Discussed the role of science and technology in nation-
building

NAST, NSTA (DOST)
Sec. Fortunato dela Peña, DOST

 highly developed countries all over the world hold a high

regard for science and technology
 One notable success story related to this is UP Manila’s
research on the use of Lagundi leaves as an effective
remedy for coughs
 Philippines launched its own micro-satellite, the “DIWATA
1”, and is scheduled to launch the “DIWATA 2” as a follow-
up
Philippine Challenges

for natural calamities

poverty line
 Difficulty in creating a self-sustaining food
ecology and economy
Interventions

 increase the number of science and engineering

graduates in the country
 produce more scholars specializing in science-
and-technology-related courses to elevate the
level of work being done in the Philippines

economic and social progress. It is a key driver of the long-term
growth of an economy.
 Many sectors do not recognize, appreciate, and understand the use
of technology and science-based information in their daily activities.
 Assessment of the Philippine Innovation Ecosystem show that
innovation actors have weak cooperation, partnerships, and trust
among them.
 The Philippines does not have enough STI infrastructure such as
laboratory facilities, testing facilities, and R&D centers.
Issues and trends

 The tedious government procurement process hampers the

immediate acquisition of equipment and other materials for
research, which in turn delays the implementation of R&D
programs and projects.
 STI vision is “ MATATAG, MAGINHAWA AT PANATAG NA BUHAY”.
 One of the legislative agenda of STI is “An Act Creating the
Philippine Space Agency”.
Activity: President’s Achievement in
Science and Technology
 Each group (Class President will facilitate) will be assigned to a President
after Marcos
 Identify some achievements in the field of science and technology
under the assigned administration
 Trace how they helped shape the Philippines as a Nation
 Research, present, and make a stand on science and technology
issues that currently affect the Philippine society
 Show your findings to class through a 5 minute creative video
presentation
