402.2 Permanent fencing shall comply with the relevant requirements of BS 1722 Parts 1, 3 and
10.
402.3 Fence posts and straining posts shall be 51 x 51 x 6mm mild steel angle, galvanised in
accordance with BS 729, and shall be set in Class E concrete footings within augered
holes as shown on the Drawings. Unless otherwise indicated, straining posts shall be
provided at the ends of sections of fencing and at abrupt changes in direction of a fence.
The distance between successive straining posts shall not exceed 60 metres.
402.4 Chain link mesh for fencing shall be 64 x 64mm mesh of 12 SWG galvanised mild steel
wire, which shall be fixed to the posts and straining wires as specified in BS 1722, all to
the satisfaction of the S.O. Where shown on the Drawings, the bottom edge of the mesh
shall be cast into a 150 x 150mm Class E concrete ground beam constructed between the
fence posts.
402.5 Plain and barbed wire for fencing shall comply with the requirements of Clause 2612 and
shall be fixed in a manner approved by the S.O.
402.6 Gates in security fencing and their associated posts and fixings shall be fabricated from
mild steel sections and plates to the details shown on the Drawings, and shall be
galvanised in accordance with BS 729.

SECTION 400 - FENCING
403 SAFETY FENCING (GUARDRAIL)
403.1 Galvanised Beams, Posts and Fittings
403.1.1 Corrugated beams and end sections shall be of mild steel complying with BS 4360 Grade
43A, and shall be fabricated to the dimensions shown on the Drawings. They shall be
galvanised in accordance with BS 729. Each beam section shall be of a length suitable
for the post spacing.
403.1.2 When a beam section is freely supported over a span of 3 metres with the traffic face
uppermost and with a 10kN vertical force applied evenly to the centre of the span, the
maximum deflection shall not exceed 40mm.
403.1.3 The strength in tension of the beams and of the joints to adjacent sections or rails shall be
not less than 330kN.
403.1.4 Steel posts and, where required, blocking pieces shall be to the dimensions shown on the
Drawings, and shall be in accordance with BS 4 Part 1. They shall be galvanised in
accordance with BS 729.
403.1.5 Bolts, nuts, washers and other pieces shall be manufactured in steel to the dimensions
shown on the Drawings as follows.
i) Bolts shall be ISO metric black hexagon type, complying with BS 4190, grade
4.6, or as otherwise shown on the Drawings.
ii) Nuts shall be ISO metric black hexagon nuts, grade 4 complying with BS 4190.
iii) Washers and other pieces shall be black complying with BS 4320, Form E, F or
G and manufactured from steel complying with BS 4449, grade 250.
All bolts, nuts, washers and other pieces shall be galvanised in accordance with BS 729.
403.1.6 Reflector strips shall be of galvanised steel of the same type as the washers to the form
and dimensions shown on the Drawings. They shall have a high performance high
intensity reflective material that is resistant to weathering applied to the front face, and on
two-way roads the rear face as well, as shown on the Drawings. The reflective material
shall be white on the left side facing traffic, and red on the right side.
403.2 Storage
403.2.1 All galvanised steel elements shall be stored under a cover that will protect them from
rain until they are erected or used. While in storage the material shall not be in direct
contact with the soil, and there shall be a minimum of 300mm of space between the
lowermost element and the ground surface.
403.3 Assembly
403.3.1 The overall finished lengths of guardrail sections and spacing of posts or mounting
brackets shall be as shown on the Drawings.
403.3.2 All guardrail shall be erected to present a flowing alignment. Lap joints shall be made in
the direction of adjacent traffic as shown on the Drawings.

SECTION 400 - FENCING
403 SAFETY FENCING (GUARDRAIL) (Cont'd)
403.3 Assembly (Cont'd)
403.3.3 Other than at a flare or a ramp or as shown on the Drawings:
i) the horizontal alignment of guardrails shall not depart from the design alignment parallel
to the carriageway edge as shown on the Drawings by more than + 30mm nor deviate in
any two successive section lengths from the straight or required radius by more than
10mm
ii) the beam shall be at the specified height above the edge of the nearest adjacent
carriageway, hardshoulder or hardstrip, or if the guardrail is located more than 1.5 metres
from the carriageway, hardshoulder or hardstrip, above the level of the surface vertically
beneath the guardrail face, within a tolerance of +ÿ30mm. In addition the difference in
vertical deviation from the required line shall not exceed + 5mm in any two adjoining
beam sections.
403.3.4 No site drilling or cutting of beams and posts will be permitted without the prior approval
of the S.O., and unless otherwise approved, special closure pieces shall be fabricated prior
to galvanising. Under no circumstances shall flame cutting equipment be used for
cutting beams or forming holes.
403.3.5 Reflective strips shall be installed along the guardrails as shown on the Drawings.
403.3.6 Except on structures, and for posts at each end of discrete sections of guardrail as
indicated on the Drawings, all metal posts shall be driven into the ground using methods
and equipment approved by the S.O..
403.3.7 Posts at the ends of sections of guardrail shall be set in Class E concrete footings within
augered holes as shown on the Drawings.
403.3.8 Where a guardrail is mounted on a structure, the post shall be provided with a baseplate
as shown on the Drawings for bolting down with four approved bolts, which shall be
contained within the supporting concrete. After fixing, each bolt shall resist a tensile
force of not less than 40kN.
404 PAINTING OF GATES AND POSTS
404.1 The painting of galvanised steel fence posts and gates shall comply with the relevant
requirements of Section 1900 as applicable to galvanised surfaces.
404.2 Unless otherwise specified or directed by the S.O., fence posts and gates shall, after
application of etch primer, receive two coats of an approved aluminium paint.
404.3 Unless otherwise agreed by the S.O., the etch primer and one coat of aluminium paint
shall be applied at the place of fabrication. Any damage to the painted surfaces which
occurs during erection of the fence posts and gates shall be made good to the satisfaction
of the S.O. before the finishing coat is applied.
