BEGIN

During earlier times, Filipino ancestors are known

as great chanters and singers. They create songs and
poems from their significant human experiences. This
shows how Filipinos are well-equipped and experienced in
the field of literature.
Through the years, many writers have evolved for
the love of prose and poetry. Filipino writers succeeded in
transposing expressions of culture and tradition to
everyone, and literature has become part of learning that
inspired generations of young writers from different
regions.
In this module, you will be able to identify 21st
century representative texts and authors from different
regions, engage in oral history research and evaluate their
themes, genres and what inspired them in creating
beautiful literary pieces.

TARGET

At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

 John Iremil E. Teodoro2 is a multilingual creative
writer and a five-time awardee of the Carlos Palanca
Memorial Awards. He has published countless books of
fiction and poetry in 2008. His essay collection entitled
Pagmumuni-muni at Pagtatalak ng Sirenang
Nagpapanggap na Prinsesa (Thoughts and Angry
Ramblings of a Siren Pretending to be a Princess) won
the Manila Critics Circle National Book Award for Creative
Non-Fiction. He was also a recipient of “Bugal kang

THE 21ST CENTURY FILIPINO AUTHORS

From the very beginning, Philippine literature is brimming with lavish and
unique literary writings that showcase oral tradition and culture of the early Filipinos.
This oral literature speaks of the experiences and daily observations of our ancestors
in promoting cultural heritage. It allows them to freely express their literary stories
and poems even without proper training nor the chance to reproduce such literary
arts.

 During the earlier times, Filipino writers were greatly influenced by the culture
of other colonizers. In fact, the medium being used at that time was also changed.
Those oral literature of the early Filipinos were overpowered by the wide range
impact of different regimes. 3
What we have in our industrial innovation at this time is the rising of our 21 st
century writers from different regions and the effects of their aesthetic works to the
Filipinos.
Currently, Philippine Literature reached stability as many 21 st century Filipino
writers kept on writing stories, plays, poetry, and even newspaper. Literary works of
today is contemporary reflecting society’s issues. Writers are updated in new trends
that are relatable to the audience.

Overtime, these current trends and societal issues are changing, so are the
universal truths and content of literary writings in the regional literature. Regional
literature aims to create literary works that use mother tongue or native language
that will uplift the national community. It is more effective if, we, the natives of our
regions are the ones who will value our language and understand our culture. By
learning and reading literary pieces from the regions, you feel proud because of the
power of the native tongue that intensifies the words and creates impact to the soul.

Here are some of the famous 21st Century Authors from other Regions:
1. Cirilo F. Bustista – was a poet, fictionist and essayist from Quezon City, died in
pneumonia at 76. His poetry and fiction,
lectures and creative
writing workshops which inspired young
writers to develop
their creative talents are some of his
aesthetic contributions
in the field of art and letters that made
him a
National Artist.

 2. Roberto Ong – also known for his pseudonym “Bob
Ong.” A web developer and contemporary novelist from
Quezon City, known for his conversational writing
technique which creates a comical and reflective
descriptions of Philippine life. His books with an element of
comedy replicates the manner of Filipino culture and
traditions, the reason why Pinoys patronized his work
and became the “Phantom of Filipino Literature.”

3. Jason Paul Laxamana – a writer, Indie filmmaker, book author and a pride of
Pampanga. Laxamana wrote his own scripts in his film
and used this as a medium of communication to the
viewers, for he believes that a good communicator
would make people pay attention. For without an
audience, a film is just a light projected on a screen.

4. Gilda Olvidado – is a Cebuana movie and television

writer and a melodrama novelist. Some of her well-
known novels in pocketbooks have been turned into
live-action movies by film industries in this country, and
were also made into a telenovela.

5. Felipe Landa Jocano – is an Ilonggo educator and an author from Cabatuan,
known for his significant body of work in the field of
Philippine cultural anthropology for documenting and
translating the famous Western Visayan folk epic,
“Hinilawod.” He was tagged as “the country’s first and
foremost cultural anthropologist” and a proponent of the
Core Population Theory of peopling of Southeast Asia. 8

NOTABLE AUTHORS FROM WESTERN VISAYAS

Hiligaynon is the Lingua Franca of Western Visayas which is composed of the
Provinces of Iloilo, Capiz, Antique and Aklan on the Island of Panay; Negros
Occidental and Guimaras. Kinaray-a or Hiraya is the mother language in Central and
Southern towns of Iloilo, Province of Antique and Capiz.
Folk literature of these places includes riddles or “paktakon,” proverbs or
“hurubaton,” ritual chants, songs and poems called “binalaybay” and tale or
“sugilanon.” When Spaniards came, the production of new forms of folk literature
started and were translated in Spanish text of prayers and lives of the saints.
Religious literature indeed flourished during the Spanish era.
When the Americans came, golden age of Hiligaynon literature took place.
English literature had a great influence in Hiligaynon writers. The creation of the
Presidential Commission for Culture and Arts and new management of the Cultural
Center of the Philippines during the Cory Revolution of 1986 gave birth to new
writers and new writings in Hiligaynon. 9
Here are some notable Hiligaynon writers of Western Visayas (Region 6):
1. Leoncio P. Deriada – is known as the “Father of
Contemporary West Visayan literature,” an Ilonggo
multilingual writer, multi-awarded novelist, playwright, and
poet whose works became a Palanca Hall of Fame in 2001
after winning 15 prizes, five of which are first prizes in
various categories.10

2. Alicia Tan Gonzalez – a native of Bacolod City, whose
specialization and expertise is in Creative Writing in
Hiligaynon. She was a Carlos Palanca Hall of Fame
Awardee for winning five first places in the Hiligaynon
Category for Maikling Kwento.11

3. Melchor F. Cichon – a creative writer and a librarian from
Aklan who received different awards in literature like the
“Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas Award” in 2001.
He is also known as the “Father of Aklanon Literature.” 12

4. Peter Solis Nery – a multi-award-winning Filipino poet,
fictionist, and playwright from Dumangas, Iloilo. His poetry
and short stories made him the Hall of Fame awardee of
