Module 7
Module 7. MEASURES OF ASSOCIATION
Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
1. Find the Spearman rank correlation coefficient (𝜌𝑠 )
2. Test the significance of 𝜌𝑠
3. Practice intellectual honesty in the interpretation of test results.
Discussions
Lesson 2. SPEARMAN RANK-DIFFERENCE METHOD
It indicates the relationship between two variables each of which is arranged in ranked
order or expressed as ordinal data.
Manual Computation Procedure:
1. Record the rank order of the first distribution giving the highest score a rank of 1.
2. Do the same with the second distribution.
3. Get the difference between these two ranks for each individual and record in the next
COURSE MODULE
column.
4. Square each of these difference and sum this column.
5. Apply the values in the formula:
𝟔 ∑(𝒙 − 𝒚)𝟐
𝝆𝒔 = 𝟏 −
𝒏(𝒏𝟐 − 𝟏)
Testing the Significance Of Spearman Rank
𝒏−𝟐
𝒕 = 𝒓√
𝟏 − 𝒓𝟐
Where:
r = correlation coefficient, spearman rank
n = number of samples
𝒅𝒆𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒐𝒎 (𝝂) = 𝒏 − 𝟐 , νtα/2
R Interpretation
±0.00 Zero correlation
±0.01 − ±0.19 Negligible correlation
±0.20 − ±0.39 Low or slight relationship
±0.40 − ±0.59 Marked or moderate correlation
±0.60 − ±0.79 High relationship
±0.80 − ±0.99 Very high correlation
±1.0 Perfect relationship

The teacher education students have Income Generating Projects during the Foundation
COURSE MODULE
Day. They were trained as teachers-entrepreneurs as such is one of the functions of State
Universities and Colleges (SUCs) on “Production”. They were divided into 10 groups and each
group has 5 or 6 members. They contributed for the capital to run the project.
What is the rank relationship between capital (X) and Profit (Y) of the Income Generating
Projects of teacher education students in a certain state university?
