V. Procedure
DAY 1
A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson
If we have colds, we need vitamin C. It is essential to have umbrella or raincoats
when it’s raining. We wear sunglasses and even sunblock when the sun is at its peak.
Why? All these things are what we use for protection and all are what we consider as
our defenses. Defense as defined is not just something that is used to protect oneself. It
is also the act of speaking or writing in support of someone or something that is being
attacked or criticized.
In the previous lesson, you have been made aware of your personal challenges
and that is your initial step into building a defense against life’s inevitable challenges.
This is because the most important component of defense is awareness.
This week, you will accomplish tasks that will help you be strong amid
discrimination. Specifically, you are expected to answer an important question: “How do I
build the best defenses against challenges to achieve the best quality of life?”
Challenges as mentioned previously, are inevitable. People struggle. Who does
not? Everyone encounters a problem daily and at times does not find a solution right
away and that is normal. However, in every battle we are in, we all need to establish our
own defenses in order for us to win.
Earlier, you were asked about your experiences on bullying which is one form of
what we call as discrimination. Discrimination is the act, practice, or an instance of
discriminating categorically rather than individually. It means treating
a person unfairly because of who they are or because they
possess certain characteristics. If you have been treated differently
from other people only because of who you are or because you
possess certain characteristics, you may have been discriminated against.

You probably have experienced, observed, or learned about a lot of
discrimination at home, in school, or among your peers. Share these experiences
through this activity below. If you didn’t experience any, (Well and good, lucky for you!)
think of a situation where discrimination is evidently shown. It may be the experience of
your relatives, friends, or even just a character from a movie that you watched or a story
you read.

Activity 1. DISCRIMINATION CHECK. Using your activity notebook, list down the different
forms of discrimination you have experienced in the table below. In addition, identify what
type of discrimination is demonstrated.

Almost everyone if not all, have experienced discrimination. Do not


be a victim. There should always be a defense against it and you
should be aware that there are certain laws such as Senate Bill No.
2814 (see the picture) that could protect you from this horrifying
situation and just experience the best things in life. You only live once
so do not let yourself be surrounded with toxic people. Live happily and
enjoy the everyday surprises that life will bring to you.

B. Establishing a Purpose
At the end of the week, you will be equipped with the skill of extracting information
from different texts such as news articles, informative texts, speeches, etc. that you read
which will make you become critical thinker. Also, relating your own experiences with those
of the others or of the characters from what you read will be evident. Lastly, choosing how to
listen and not just hear will help you be analytical in solve your problems.

8 Minutes and 46 Seconds: How George Floyd Was Killed in Police

The Times has reconstructed the death of George Floyd on May 25.
Security footage, witness videos and official documents show how a series of
actions by officers turned fatal.

On May 25, Minneapolis police officers arrested George Floyd, a 46-year-
old black man, after a deli employee called 911, accusing him of buying
cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill. Seventeen minutes after the first squad
car arrived at the scene, Mr. Floyd was unconscious and pinned beneath three
police officers, showing no signs of life.
By combining videos from bystanders and security cameras, reviewing
official documents and consulting experts, The New York Times reconstructed
in detail the minutes leading to Mr. Floyd’s death. Our video shows officers
taking a series of actions that violated the policies of the Minneapolis Police
Department and turned fatal, leaving Mr. Floyd unable to breathe, even as he
and onlookers called out for help.
The day after Mr. Floyd’s death, the Police Department fired all four of the
officers involved in the episode, and on Friday the Hennepin County attorney,
Mike Freeman, announced murder and manslaughter charges against Derek
Chauvin, the officer who can be seen most clearly in witness videos pinning
Mr. Floyd to the ground. Mr. Chauvin, who is white, kept his knee on Mr.
Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds, according to the criminal
complaint against him. Our video shows that Mr. Chauvin did not remove his
knee even after Mr. Floyd lost consciousness, and for a full minute after
paramedics arrived at the scene.
The three other former officers, Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and
Tou Thao — all of whom can be seen in our video participating in Mr. Floyd’s
arrest — remain under investigation.

George Floyd death: More large protests in US but violence falls


Tens of thousands of people have demonstrated, mainly peacefully,
across the United States for an eighth night following the death of African-
American George Floyd in police custody.
One of the biggest protests, joined by Floyd's relatives, took place in his
hometown of Houston, Texas.
Many defied curfews in several cities, imposed after violence and looting in
some districts on Monday night.
The Pope has issued a call for racism not to be ignored.
"We cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism," he said. But he also
condemned the violence: "Nothing is gained by violence and so much is lost."
The Floyd case has reignited deep-seated anger over police killings of
black Americans and racism.

Demonstrators have taken to the streets - not only to express their


outrage at the treatment of Mr Floyd - but to condemn police brutality against
black Americans more widely.

There have been calls, and a proposal from a US lawmaker, to end the
qualified immunity of police which prevents civil legal action against them.
More generally protesters have called for an end to racism and discrimination.

In central Washington DC police fired tear gas after darkness. The military
were again on the streets of the capital and helicopters hovered above
protesters marching towards the White House.

Traffic was blocked in New York's Manhattan district as protesters


ignored a night-time curfew, which had been extended for a week. Video
footage showed them surrounding a police van.

In Houston, where Floyd is due to be buried, Mayor Sylvester Turner, told


the crowds people should know that he "did not die in vain".

Big rallies were also held in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Atlanta and
Seattle. Minneapolis, where 46-year-old Floyd died, was reported to be
relatively calm.

But in Seattle, Portland and Atlanta there were reports of tear gas being
fired.

This Coronavirus pandemic has brought so many lives into


waste. It has caused a greater impact not just on the economic
stability of every nation but also on the mental health of every person.
However, this kind of news and the issues around the death of George Floyd need to be
addressed as well. We all need to process and respond to what is going on, understand
its complex causes, and strive for solutions. Many have already contributed to a
thoughtful discussion about everything from the purpose of protests and the role of
controlling in our communities to how deeply ingrained racism is within us and within our

Activity 3. GUIDE FOR READING. Read the following text carefully. Note the following

The Author Anne Terry White (1896), who was born in Russia, has
worked as a teacher, a social worker, and a translator
of Russian literature. Amongst her most-loved tales is
the “Gorgon’s Head.”

Oral Tradition An oral tradition is the manner in which information


is passed from one generation to the next in the
absence of writing or a recording medium. In the days
before near- universal literacy, bards would sing or
chant their people’s stories. They employed various
techniques to aid in their own memory and to help their
listeners keep track of the story.
This oral tradition was a way to keep the history or
culture of the people alive, and since it was a form of
story-telling, it was a popular entertainment.

Look For As you read the myth, look for the heroic qualities
of Perseus and the personal challenges he has to
overcome to acquire “the Gorgon’s head”.

To better understand the story, let us first unlock the meaning of some unfamiliar

Activity 6. MY COAT OF ARMS


To be able to kill the Gorgon, Perseus built a line of defenses. Identify what these
defenses are through the coat of arms diagram on the next page. Explain the value of each of
those defenses as Perseus faced his challenges.

Discrimination is the unequal treatment provided to one or more


parties on the basis of a mutual accord or some other logical or
illogical reason.

The Gorgon’s Head is about the heroism and the selfless love of a son to his
mother characterized by Perseus. No matter how dangerous it was for Perseus to
behead Medusa, he still pursued it for her beloved mother. His skill may have been
underestimated by his stepfather, King Polydectys, yet he went home victorious and
proved to all that with determination comes success.
Meanwhile, Medusa, a repulsed and disgusted Greek mythology characters  was
one of the three Gorgons, daughters of Phorcys and Ceto, sisters of
the Graeae, Echidna, and Ladon – all dreadful and fearsome beasts. A once beautiful
mortal, Medusa was the exception in the family, until she incurred the wrath of Athena,
either due to her boastfulness or because of an ill-fated love affair with Poseidon.
Transformed into a vicious monster with snakes for hair, she was killed by Perseus, who
afterward used her still potent head as a weapon, before gifting it to Athena.

The World Health Organization is working closely with global experts, governments
and partners to rapidly expand scientific knowledge on this new coronavirus and to provide
timely advice on measures to protect people’s health and prevent the spread of this outbreak.
Health workers are at the front line of any outbreak response and as such are exposed

where people voice out their opinions, beliefs and even advocacy as it caters
a wide range of audience. An advocacy is an activity by an individual or group
that aims to influence decisions within political, economic, and social institutions. However, we
understand the fact that not all have internet connections at home or even a gadget to use
and post on these social media platforms. Thus, we find ways. In a short bond paper, think as
if you logged in your Instagram account. Post any picture that shows acts of discrimination.
Below the picture, create a short but striking caption that states your advocacy about
discrimination. The criteria are as follow:
