prayer.

c. Energizer
• Please remain standing class for our (The student will follow the energizer)
energizer. (The teacher will lead the
energizer)
• Okay, you may now take your seat class. • Thank you, ma’am.

d. Checking of Attendance
• Who is absent for today class?
• Okay very good! We have a perfect • No one is absent ma’am.
attendance.

e. Checking of Assignment/Task
• Are you done with your learning task and
learning check uploaded in VSUEE for • Yes, ma’am.
Lesson 1.1?
• Wow very good class. Well done!

• Now, before we proceed, I just want to tell

everyone that every time I give instructions
or during my discussion, if I will ask you “Am
I clear?” you have to respond to me “crystal
ma’am” and if I will ask “Am I crystal?”, you
have to respond “clear ma’am”.
• Am I clear class? • Crystal ma’am.

• Are you all ready to learn our new topic? • Yes ma’am.

B. Preparatory Activity

• Review
• Last week, you have discussed with sir Leo
about relations and functions. To determine
if you have really applied and learned
something from the previous discussion, let
us have a short activity entitled “Put me in
the Right Place”. I have here examples of
relation and on the board is a two- column
table with heading of “Functions” and “Not
Functions”. I want you to identify whether
the given example is a function or not. You
have to put it in the right column or in the
right place. Am I crystal class? • Clear ma’am.
• Are you all ready? • Yes, we are ready ma’am!

Given Examples:
• {(−1,0), (0, −3), (2, −3), (3,0)}
• {(6,10), (−7,3), (0,4)(6, −4)}
• {(−1,0), (2, −3), (−2,5), (−1,4)}

Two-column table:

Functions Not Functions Functions Not Functions

(6,10), (−7,3),
{ }
(0,4), (6, −4)
(−1,0), (0, −3),
{ }
(2, −3), (3,0)
(−1,0), (2, −3),
{ }
(−2,5), (−1,4)
• Wow, you did great! Based from your
answer, I can say that you have really
learned from the previous discussion. So let
us proceed.

b. Motivation

• Before anything else, I know all of you find

Mathematics difficult, but always keep in
mind that math is significantly essential to
our life. As what sir Leo always say
"Learning mathematics is a matter of
mindset." If you set your mind with positive
thoughts like "I can do this," then "You can
do it."

C. Developmental Activities

• Activating Prior Knowledge

• Now, in this lesson, you will learn more
about functions. But before that, let us have
a pre-activity.
• Our next activity is 4 pics 1 word. Are you
familiar with this game class? • Yes ma’am.
• I will show 4 pictures and you have to guess
the word associated with the pictures. Am I • Crystal ma’am.

Great job!

• Analysis

• Based from the words you have formed in • I think our lesson for this afternoon ma’am
the activity, what would be our topic this involves multiplication and division of
afternoon? Anyone? functions.

• Okay very good!

• Now, are you ready to learn how to multiply • Yes we are ready ma’am!
and divide functions class?

• Abstraction

• Our topic for today is all about operations on

functions specifically on multiplying and
dividing functions. At the end of the lesson,
students are expected to:

• Perform multiplication and division of

functions with 95% confidence.
• Solve given function composition
comprehensively.

• In multiplying fractions, we have important

steps to remember to get the product of two
fractions.
10 15
• For example: Find the product of 21 and 8
(Use cancellation of factors when
convenient)

Solution:
The numerator and
2 ∙ 5 3 ∙ 5 denominator must be
= ∙ rewritten in terms of its prime
3 ∙ 7 2 ∙ 2 ∙ 2 factors

Common factors in the

2 ∙ 5 ∙ 3 ∙ 5 numerator and denominator
=
3 ∙ 7 ∙ 2 ∙ 2 ∙ 2 can be simplified as “1”, which
is often called “cancelling”

25 Multiply the numerators to

=
7∙2∙2 have the new numerator.

25 Multiply the denominators to

= have the new denominator
28

• Now, if we are given two rational

expressions. Take note that we just have to
follow the concept of multiplying normal
fractions, the same as the example above.
(Note: Rational expressions is the division of
two polynomials)
𝑥 2 −4𝑥−5
• For example: Find the product of 𝑥 2 −3𝑥+2
𝑥 2 −5𝑥+6
and 𝑥 2−3𝑥−10
Solution:
Rewrite the numerators
(𝑥+1)(𝑥−5) (𝑥−2)(𝑥−3) and denominators of the
= (𝑥−1)(𝑥−2) ∙ (𝑥+2)(𝑥−5) two rational expressions
into their prime factors.

(𝑥+1)(𝑥−5)(𝑥−2)(𝑥−3) Cancel out common factors

= (𝑥−1)(𝑥−2)(𝑥+2)(𝑥−5) in the numerator and the
denominator

(𝑥+1)(𝑥−3) Write the remaining factors in the

= (𝑥−1)(𝑥+2)
numerator and denominator.

𝑥 2 −2𝑥−3 Multiply the numerators to have

= (𝑥−1)(𝑥+2) the new numerator.

𝑥 2 −2𝑥−3 Multiply the denominators to have

= the new denominator
𝑥 2 +𝑥−2

• Am I clear class? • Crystal ma’am.

• Now, if we are to divide two fractions or

rational expressions, we just need to
multiply the dividend with the reciprocal of
the divisor.
2𝑥 2 +𝑥−6

2𝑥 2 +𝑥−6
For example: Divide 2𝑥 2 ∓7𝑥+5 by 2𝑥 2 −3𝑥−20
𝑥 2 −2𝑥−8 • ma’am.
2𝑥 2 ∓7𝑥+5

• What is the dividend here class?

• Okay very good. Now let’s try to solve this

Solution:

2𝑥 2 +𝑥−6 2𝑥 2 −3𝑥−20 Multiply the dividend with

= 2𝑥 2 ∓7𝑥+5 ∙ the reciprocal of the divisor.
𝑥 2 −2𝑥−8

• Notice that it is already in multiplication

form, so we just have to follow the steps in
the previous example about multiplying
rational expressions.

(2𝑥−3)(𝑥+2) (𝑥−4)(2𝑥+5) Rewrite the numerators

= (2𝑥+5)(𝑥+1) ∙ (𝑥+2)(𝑥−4) and denominators of the
two rational expressions
into their prime factors.

(2𝑥−3)(𝑥+2)(𝑥−4)(2𝑥+5) Cancel out common factors

= (2𝑥+5)(𝑥+1)(𝑥+2)(𝑥−4)
in the numerator and the
denominator
2𝑥−3 Write the remaining factors in the
= numerator and denominator
𝑥+1

• Definition. Let f and g be functions.

o Their product, which is denoted by

(𝑓 ∙ 𝑔), is the function denoted by
(𝑓 ∙ 𝑔)(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑥) ∙ 𝑔(𝑥).

o Their quotient, which is denoted by

𝑓
(𝑔), is the function denoted by
𝑓 𝑓(𝑥)
(𝑔) (𝑥) = 𝑔(𝑥) excluding the values of
𝑥 where 𝑔(𝑥) = 0

• To better understand this, let us try these

examples:

• Example 1: Let 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 1 and

𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 1

Determine the following functions:

• (𝑓 ∙ 𝑔)(𝑥)
𝑓
• ( ) (𝑥)𝑔

Solution:

• (𝑓 ∙ 𝑔)(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑥) ∙ 𝑔(𝑥)

= (𝑥 2 − 1) ∙ (𝑥 + 1)
= 𝑥3 + 𝑥2 − 𝑥 − 1

𝑓 𝑓(𝑥)
• (𝑔) (𝑥) = 𝑔(𝑥)

𝑥2 − 1
=
𝑥+1

(𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 − 1)
=
𝑥+1

=𝑥−1

• Example 2: Let 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 + 1 and

𝑔(𝑥) = −4𝑥 − 3. Find (𝑓 ∙ 𝑔)(𝑥)
Solution:

(𝑓 ∙ 𝑔)(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑥) ∙ 𝑔(𝑥)

= (3𝑥 + 1)(−4𝑥 − 3)
= −12𝑥 2 − 9𝑥 − 4𝑥 − 3
= −12𝑥 2 − 13𝑥 − 3

• Example 3: Let 𝑓(𝑥) = 5𝑥 + 10 and

𝑓
𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 2. Find (𝑔) (𝑥)

Solution:

𝑓 𝑓(𝑥)
( ) (𝑥) =
𝑔 𝑔(𝑥)

5𝑥+10
= 𝑥 2 +3𝑥+2

5(𝑥+2)
= (𝑥+2)(𝑥+1)

5
=
𝑥+1
• Yes ma’am
• Did you get it class?

• Definition. Let f and g be functions. The

composite function denoted by (𝑓 ᴏ 𝑔) is
defined by (𝑓 ᴏ 𝑔)(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑔(𝑥)). The
process of getting a composite function is
called function composition.

For examples 4-6, use the functions below:

𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 + 1
𝑔(𝑥) = √𝑥 + 1
ℎ(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 2

• Example 4: Find and simplify (𝑔 ᴏ 𝑓)(𝑥)

Solution:
(𝑔 ᴏ 𝑓)(𝑥) = 𝑔(𝑓(𝑥))

= √𝑓(𝑥) + 1

= √(2𝑥 + 1) + 1

= √2𝑥 + 2
• Example 5: Find and simplify (ℎ ᴏ 𝑓)(𝑥)

Solution:
(ℎ ᴏ 𝑓)(𝑥) = ℎ(𝑓(𝑥))

= (𝑓(𝑥))2 − 2(𝑓(𝑥)) + 2

= (2𝑥 + 1)2 − 2(2𝑥 + 1) + 2

= (2𝑥 + 1)2 − 4𝑥 − 2 + 2

= 4𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 + 1 − 4𝑥

= 4𝑥 2 + 1

• Example 6: Find and simplify (𝑓 ᴏ ℎ)(5)

Solution:
(𝑓 ᴏ ℎ)(5) = 𝑓(ℎ(5))

= 2(ℎ(5)) + 1

= 2(52 − 2(5) + 2) + 1

= 2(25 − 10 + 2) + 1

= 2(17) + 1

= 34 + 1

= 35
