Class 3 Helical Spring Design

The document provides instructions and examples for solving problems on the design of helical springs. It includes three example problems: [1] designing a helical spring for a safety valve, [2] designing springs to bring a moving car to rest, and [3] designing springs to absorb the impact of a falling mine lift. The examples provide the relevant equations and step-by-step workings to solve for the spring characteristics like diameter, stress, and number of coils given various loading conditions and design parameters.

ORIENTED PROBLEMS ON
DESIGN OF HELICAL SPRINGS
Design a helical spring for a spring loaded safety valve (Ramsbottom
Safety Valve) for the following conditions:

Diameter of valve seat = 𝟔𝟓 𝒎𝒎,

Opening pressure = 𝟎. 𝟕 𝑵/𝒎𝒎𝟐,

Maximum pressure when the valve blows off freely = 𝟎. 𝟕𝟓 𝑵/𝒎𝒎𝟐,

Maximum lift to the valve when the pressure rises from 𝟎. 𝟕 to 𝟎. 𝟕𝟓

𝑵/𝒎𝒎𝟐 = 𝟑. 𝟓 𝒎𝒎,

Maximum allowable stress = 𝟓𝟓𝟎 𝑵/𝒎𝒎𝟐

Modulus of rigidity = 𝟖𝟒 × 𝟏𝟎𝟑 𝑵/𝒎𝒎𝟐

Spring index = 𝟓. 𝟓
A loaded narrow gauge Car weighing 20000 N and moving at
72 m/min is brought to rest by a bumper consisting of two
helical springs of round section. In bringing the car to rest the
springs are to be compressed by 200 mm. Design the spring.

Maximum allowable stress = 𝟓𝟓𝟎 𝑵/𝒎𝒎𝟐

Modulus of rigidity = 𝟖𝟒 × 𝟏𝟎𝟑 𝑵/𝒎𝒎𝟐

Spring index = 10

Let F = Maximum force on each Spring

Kinetic Energy of the Car =KE= ½ (W/g) v2 .......................(1)

This KE is absorbed by two springs and each is compressed by 200 mm

Average load on each Spring = (0 + F)/2 = F/2

One Spring absorbs energy =displacement x Force = 200 x F/2

So two Springs absorbs energy = 2 x 200 x F/2..................(2)

Equating (1) and (2) ; We get F, which is the maximum load on each
spring

We would put F in the following equation to get the spring diameter

𝜏 = 8F𝑚𝑎𝑥DK/ d3
To find the active number of coils in the spring;
we will consider the load to vary from 0 to F
with corresponding deflection of 200mm in the
following equation:

i = yGd4/ 8FD3
= (yGd/8F) x (d3/D3)
= yGd/ 8FC3

𝐹 = 𝐹𝑚𝑎𝑥 − 𝐹𝑚𝑖𝑛
In a coal mine, a lift (elevator) is used for carrying loads, a group of
10 identical closed coil helical springs are set in parallel to absorb the
shock caused by the falling of the lift in case of failure. The loaded lift
weighs 10 tonnes . The maximum distance from where the lift may
fail is 60 m. Design the springs if

a) Active Number of Coils = 24

b) Maximum allowable stress = 𝟓𝟓𝟎 𝑵/𝒎𝒎𝟐

c) Modulus of rigidity = 𝟖𝟒 × 𝟏𝟎𝟑 𝑵/𝒎𝒎𝟐

d) Spring index = 10

Spring Bed having 10 Helical

Springs (Identical)
Number of Springs = 10

Let F = Equivalent Static (Gradually applied load) on each spring which can
produce the same effect as by the falling lift weighing 10 tonnes

y= deflection produced in each spring (compression)

Work done by the falling lift just at the time of striking

= 10 tonnes x (60 + y) ......(1)

This Energy is absorbed by ten springs and each is compressed by y mm

Average load on each Spring = (0 + F)/2 = F/2

One Spring absorbs energy =displacement x Force = y x F/2

So ten Springs absorbs energy = 10 y F/2..................(2)

Equating (1) and (2) ; We get an equation with two unknowns F and y
The number of active coils required is given
by

i = yGd4/ 8FD3
= (yGd/8F) x (d3/D3)
= yGd/ 8FC3
Using this equation and the previous equation,
we find the two unknowns F and y
