1. Social Networking

Twenty years ago, maintaining a close relationship with a friend or classmate who moved to another country would be one hard feat.
Why? Back then, communication was slower and more expensive, so to maintain ties with loved ones who are far away, you would
have to wait days or even months for your letters to arrive, or you would have to spend a lot of money on long distance phone calls. It's
easy to lose contact when a friend moves to another place. After all, what is a friendship if you can hardly communicate or know what's
happening in the other person's life?

Times have changed. Social networking has made the world a lot smaller over the Internet so that even if your friend lives in the farthest possible location on the
globe, you can still be updated with each other as easily as if your friend lives across the street. Online social networking is a global phenomenon that involves
being part of a social networking service or SNS website, connecting with old friends, and making new friends. A number of SNS sites focus on particular interests
while others are more general and are called "traditional" social networking sites. SNS services are now fundamental to how people use and engage each other
on the Internet.

In this lesson, you will learn more about online social networking and how you can use it to your advantage.

2. Uses of Social Networks

In essence, SNS sites are platforms for self-expression, enabling a user to make a profile based on what he or she
wants to share to other people. Social networks are also useful tools for communication, enabling family, friends,
colleagues, past acquaintances and even strangers to communicate by sending a private message, posting a
comment on a user's profile, or using instant messaging features.

The continuing increase in popularity of social networking can be attributed to its many functions and it's now fast
moving beyond the casual use of making friends. It has made the shift towards enterprise social networking (ESN)
where doing business, establishing professional contacts, and promoting brands are the primary concerns.

Following are the main uses of social networking services:

 1.       Connecting - Social networks let you maintain close connections with your old friends, classmates, or relatives who live on the other side of the world. You
can easily know how they look like at the present time, where they study or work, and other personal information that they share through their profiles. Of course,
you get to update them on what's happening in your life as well.

2.       Communication - Who says you need to send an e-mail or log on to instant messaging just to say something to a friend? With social networks, you can
just log in to your account and send a message to anyone in your list. It can be a private message or a public message sent through a comment or testimonial on
your friend's public profile or "wall". If your SNS site has an instant messaging feature, you can also chat directly with your friends.

3.       Self-Expression - The heart and soul of SNS sites are the users' personal profile. This is the place where you can express yourself through statements,
descriptions, photos, and other things you post. Social networking gives you absolute control of what you want or don't want to share with your friends. You can
open up yourself to other users by posting your likes, dislikes, tastes, thoughts, and more.

4.       File Sharing - Say you've just had a fun school trip and you've got lots of pictures on your camera. Of course, all your classmates are begging for copies. If
you and your classmates are part of a social network, you can just upload all the pictures onto your account and let anyone who wants copies grab or download
your pictures. In the same way, you can also grab your friends' photos, videos, and other files they want to share.

5.       Community Building - One of the most desired features of social networking is that it enables users to build a community and meet new friends. You are
also given the power to make your community as diverse as you want because individuals from around the world have access to social networking sites. Not only
can you make new friends, but you can also learn about the culture and languages of other people.

and revenue losses, Myspace still has its fair share of the market where SNSes are concerned. It integrated Facebook Connect in

4. Making the Most Out of Social Networking

Now that you know the uses of social networks and what popular social networking sites offer, you can make the most out of being a member
of any social site.

Safety Precautions

Remember that your safety must always come first. As in real life, not all people in social networks can be trusted to have good intentions. Below are five pointers
on how you can improve your personal safety as a social network user.

 1.       Don't share too much information.

Social networks let you share as much information as you want on your profile. But it is important to remember that not all people who can view your profile are
harmless and that you must not give all personal information asked for by a service. It's best not to post your full address, phone number, bank details, and the
like. It's also best to restrict access to your page and let only the people you personally know view your complete profile and photos to lessen risks.

 2.       Censor everything you post and upload.

Think twice before uploading photos, videos, or other personal files because almost anything can be copied, downloaded and forwarded these days. For instance,
if you went swimming with friends and saved lots of pictures of yourself wearing a bathing suit or bikini, ask your parents for advice on which photos would be
alright to upload, seen by your friends, and possibly passed on. Never share provocative photos, intimate details, or sexually suggestive files or thoughts online as
doing so increases the chances of your being harassed. Be careful so as not to unknowingly threaten or offend anyone. Remember that colleges and employers
nowadays can do a background online check on applicants, so always keep your online presence clean and in good standing.

3.       Be careful when talking to people you don't know.

It's inevitable that you will be chatting or exchanging messages with people you don't know online, especially when you join groups or networks that center on a
common hobby or interest. Never give very personal information to people that you don't know even if they seem nice or helpful. Keep conversations with
strangers friendly yet formal. Don't flirt with strangers because many people lie about who they really are. If someone does something that makes you
uncomfortable, stop talking to that person immediately and block his or her ID/profile using filtering features.. If someone-continues to harass or threaten you even
after you have stopped responding, inform your parents or any responsible adult you know.

4.       Protect your computer.

Many social networks today have advertisements that contain malicious code which can infect your computer's system. Here are some ways to protect your
computer from viruses from social networks and from other websites as well.

Install an updated and strong anti-virus system.

Activate the firewall.
Don't open messages that look suspicious, especially those from people you don't know.
Use passwords that are uncommon and hard to figure out.

 5.       Don't make social networking your life.

Social networking can be very addictive. It's easy to spend hours improving your public profile, viewing your friends' pages and updates, and communicating
through these networks. Remember that social networking is just a tool and not a way of life. Never replace real life interaction and bonding with your family and
friends with hours of social networking. If you find yourself spending more time each day on your social network accounts instead of making time for your studies
and being with people in person, you may be addicted and must then act accordingly.

5. Maximizing Social Networking

Now that you know how to be safe in social networking, it's time to learn how you can maximize being a member of a social network
with the following tips:

1.  Use social networks to mass communicate, advertise a business, or promote a cause.

Planning to attend a public concert on a weekend? It's fast, easy, and fun to spread the news by inviting your friends through a
bulletin post or an announcement using your social network. For instance, Facebook allows you to create a page for a specific event,
invite friends, and ask if they are coming or not. In 2011, a 14-year-old girl in Hertfordshire, England once used Facebook to invite friends to her birthday party and
ended up with over 21,000 confirmations and the bulk of it were from strangers. It just shows how powerful social networking can be and emphasizes the
importance of privacy settings.

Do you, your family, or your friends have a business? Whether it's an upcoming garage sale, selling cookies, or a large-scale business, you can promote it in a
fast and efficient way through your social network. You can even post pictures of the goods or services you sell along with complete price lists and other
information to entice future customers and to encourage questions or feedback. Lesson 9 will tackle more of this and other ways to make money online.

Are you currently supporting a particular cause? Do you know someone who could use the help of a lot of people? Social networks give you the perfect platform to
communicate any cause or need, make a lot of people aware of it in one move, and increase the chances of getting support.

 2.       Learn from individuals who come from various walks of life or who have different areas of knowledge or expertise.

Social networking is a great way to locate people with similar interests or who know about and are willing to share the things you need or want to know more
about. For example, if you're interested in Japanese culture, you can join a group on your social network that discusses Japanese culture and learn something
new each day from the messages they post. If you want to know more about unique recipes or vintage cars, you can join groups that discuss these and might
even get to know and communicate with knowledgeable people who know a lot about these and who are willing to share what they know.

3.       Build a good online reputation.

As mentioned earlier, many employers and universities today do a background check on applicants, and this includes viewing applicants' social network accounts.
Thus, it's important to ensure that your profile contains what you want to promote about yourself -your strengths, your talents, and probably links to some of your
works or other online spaces. Don't put reputation-tarnishing descriptions that scream irresponsibility or anything derogatory, such as "I hate studying" or "I only
want to party." Use your social network account as a tool to build a good online reputation in an honest and respectable way.
