EDU 098 Current Trends in Physical Education

1. The current trends in physical education aim to place less emphasis on competitive team
sports and more emphasis on fun and lifelong fitness abilities. How will the teacher deal with
the various types of students throughout this predicament?

Answer:
Physical education plays a vital role in maintaining the strong body and mind of every
learner inside a classroom where they are obliged to participate in physical activities and
promote fitness in this specific discipline to become healthy while accomplishing learning tasks
given to them.

It aims to boost learners' confidence and improve competence to actively engage in

physical activities that become an integral part of their lives and prevent the development of
health problems like diabetes and obesity, because a person's lifestyle can affect their life in the
long run. By this means, teachers should promote among learners that they should focus on their
individual development rather than compare themselves to others. Tasks should be interactive
and fun so students will become motivated to do it. The teacher's role is to guide them through
this activity, not as a competition, so they won't look at their classmates as competitors but as
learning companions.

Furthermore, competitive sports like basketball and soccer should not be set aside
because by letting them engage in this kind of physical activity, we need to remind them that
they should know how to play fair and square, which can cause trouble for both sides. For
instance, giving a positive environment where they can express themselves without judgement,
there are some students who are gifted with sports talents, so we should not limit their
capabilities in a four-cornered classroom; we should let them explore their talents. As for the
teacher's teaching strategy, it has to be interactivity while keeping your instruction simple so they
can understand it correctly and do not misinterpret it.

In conclusion, teachers need to have proper classroom management to ensure that the
lesson is being executed properly. If a certain problem arises, the teacher should learn how to
handle it smoothly without letting his/her student get into trouble by guiding them correctly.

2. Identify and discuss current trends, issues and challenges facing physical education and
sports?

Answer:
In the midst of a ceasing pandemic where in some schools are still refusing and limiting
physical interaction with their students one of the most affected subject is Physical Education
along side with this precaution and other modification to continue formal education without
risking the health of the learners are trends issues and challenges physical education and sports is
facing right now most of it are as follows :

a. Demolishing Physical Education Subject in an Online Platform

Most of the medium of Education of Learners are including Online or Virtual
platform nowadays especially in Secondary Education Physical Education are being
Undervalued the allotted time for Physical Education are being reduced for the reason
that it must give way to the core subjects however , we need physical education now
more than ever owing the fact that it has benefits for the learners body such as it increases
the oxygen flow to the brain which cognitive skills to foster help them focus more. and let
us not forget the fact that Physical Education doesn’t limit itself to Physical Activities it
also involves being Literate to Nutrition and personal Hygiene .

The Philippine Sport Commission and the Department of Education Unison stated
that “Physical Education Should be part of a Core curriculum “ with all the
Content ,Literacy,Activities and Benefits of Physical Education not only for the school
years of the learners but also their future Physical Education Deserves to be part of the
Core subjects of the curriculum.

b. Teacher being a Coach

Some of the Physical Education Teachers are Task to be the Coach of a specific
sport whether its Basketball ,volleyball, baseball or even Dance sports however when the
teacher is the Coach there are some cases that their class won’t have a teacher to attend to.

Time Management is vital for 21st Century Educator however, supplementing

both learners and student athletes the knowledge and skills they need without suffering
of the quality of Education are becoming a conflict for them because of the fact that both
teacher and coach plays a vital role on both learners and athletes development

Example : lack of assistance and guidance of the teacher to physical education class can
lead to loosing both the necessary physical activities and the interest of the students to the
subject on the other hand lack of guidance of the coach especially in sports and stunts
can lead to unwanted accidents and unpleasant outcome

So the dilemma is whether should they be the Teacher or The Coach ?.

c. Gender Sensitivity
Gender sensitivity talks about “ the process by which people are made aware of how
gender plays a role in life through treatment of others “.

Modern World leads to New Norms ,modifications and Acceptance for

something new As a 21st century educators its our duty to be the first line of Defense and
Guide towards Gender Inclusivity , not only to avoid the so called “CANCEL
CULTURE” but also it is a way of accepting people’s gender expression exist and must
be respected .

I myself is an Advocate for Inclusive Education where my learners can feel comfortable
about themselves to bring out the best in them I remember one of my students he is openly “Gay
“ though his gay he likes playing basketball inevitably he is being bullied because of it so as their
teacher I helped him to boost his confidence and be active in sports again by properly educating
the whole class that basketball sport is not limited for boys only even learners who have different
gender expression can play and can win too “SPORTS ARE FOR EVERYONE “

And in order for us to be a Gender Sensitive Educator First Respect one’s gender
perception, Respect is always the first step towards acceptance we are their role model and if we
spread positive behaviour by means of respecting everything else will follow also understanding
their background gives us an insight on what they have been through to give them the council ,
guidance and care that they need lastly treat them equally we are handling diverse learners
however it mustn’t stop us from treating them fair and equal.

d .Learners interest in Physical Education

Welcome to Contemporary World and Digital Age where in it is believed that the
“world is in the palm of our hands” (by means of using smart phone) along with the
ceasing pandemic unfortunately, this leads to learners spending most of their time just
using their phones being stagnant lacking physical interaction and activities
And this can be a factor in learners starting to loose interest in physical education together
with other factors such as no space at their house to perform physical activities which can
lead to difficulty of concentration; some learners also are experiencing family problems
most of them are bought by the pandemic which also leads to emotional stress and mental
health problems and lastly, learning disabilities, some learn verbally some learn physically
and some learn visually.

As their Teacher we must be Creative and innovative of what we do and proper

choice of pedagogy and technology to use to cater the needs of physical movements of
the students even if its still a parallel gathering we must continue to improve ourselves to
become better version of ourselves and deserve to be called as an Efficient Educator .

There are ways to make our student more interested and those are the following :

1. Make them realize its part of their daily life

Physical Education doesn’t stop at the extent of the four walls of the classroom its part
and necessity in life we must let them realize that all the acquired knowledge from physical
fitness are put into action for mutual benefit
2. Make the lesson more fun

Creativity ,Innovation and Integration are always the key to have a fun and exciting class
the learners will enjoy and learn a lot at the same time .

3. Let them participate in the whole process

“learning by doing” practical assessments , actual activities and sports executions have a major
role In a learners development, this is one of the strengths of physical education it requires actual
experience that enhances the strength of body, mind ,emotions and boost the self confidence of
the learners.

4. Use multiple resources

Virtual class set up have limited access for physical education class so its vital for the
teacher to be more resourceful ;think and create all of the possible instrument to use at the
comfort of the learners home .
5. Change the environment
During the pandemic most of the learners have experienced stress and anxiety due to lack
of physical contact and interaction changing the class environment such as the mood the
interactive applications and other creative stuffs can help the students lighten up of what they are
going through if the lesson is hard enough don’t make it more difficult for them deliver it with
ease and enjoyment .
6. Make it achievable
Every learner is special they are diverse some are athletic and some are not the activities
that we should let them experience should be attainable so that no one is left behind
7. Understand their interest
Lack of interest leads to no learning at all 21st century learners needs 21st century
educators they need diverse approach after mastering the content its vital to choose the proper
pedagogical approach and technology.

3. With the opportunity to help turn around declining fitness in children, school and PE
curriculum programs have made drastic changes. Team sports and fun activities that were
once the norm are being elbowed out by more intense and direct physical activity focusing on
overall health. How can PE time make a difference? Elaborate well your answers.

Nowadays, youngsters prefer to play with their gadgets like phones and tablets rather
than be physically active for the day, which causes their bones and muscles to not be stretched,
causing them to grow with a weak immune system and an unhealthy physique because of the
kind of lifestyle they have developed. This is what Physical Education attempts to solve by
making students physically active in sports and fun fitness activities that can only be discussed in
this subject.

However, the changes in the Physical Health discipline are focusing less on entertaining
activities and team sports and more on teaching learners’ long-term health that increases
children's metabolism, cardiovascular endurance, and muscular health. For instance, in this
curriculum, we can understand that what we eat right now may affect our lives in the long run
and that avoiding unhealthy meals like junk foods might reduce our chances of developing
chronic diseases like kidney failure or colon problems. Also, avoiding incorrect sleep schedules
can also result in significant improvements in cognitive and long-term memory since the brain
can work correctly. It is a discipline that offers freedom to learners to explore their physical
capabilities and talents compared to other subjects that focus more on cognition. Being
physically fit is important so we can allow ourselves to be healthy while performing our daily
tasks.

As a physical education instructor, it is not always easy to be motivated when teaching

learners, but it is important that you teach them because you care and act professionally as you
execute your lesson, and you can also make team sports livelier and fun, especially if you are
teaching younger students. Encourage them to participate in outdoor activities by teaching them
why it is important to be an active person, which can benefit them in becoming a healthy person.
4. Today kids are more sedentary than ever, due in part of enormous amount time spent on
phones, computer, and engaging with social media. Because of this, weight-related health
issues such childhood obesity and diabetes are more prevalent in children and become major
health issue. As a physical education teacher how do encourage and introduce the physical
education program across to their family and other members of the community and the good
benefits of being physically active as well, will you be that motivated to do so? Justify well
your discussion.

Answer:
“Physical Inactivity is the New Smoking “ this is one of the most concerning reality of
this generation is facing right now.
Obesity diabetes and other heart rate problem usually, this are related to adults
unfortunately since everyone is spending more time on social media always looking at their
screen being stagnant and lying at the comfort of their home these inactivity and lacking of
physical movements are the reasons why people who are diagnosed with obesity are getting
younger and younger from time to time
As a Physical Education Teacher, I will first orient the parents and other family members
the importance of Physical Education Specifically Physical Fitness that its not just all fun and
games its beneficial for their health and wellness encourage my students to take charge and
engage their family members with their activities the more the merrier its not only spreading
awareness for the whole family of each students but also spreading positivity and bonding with
their family when they are engage together by the means of physical activities
Nothing is more motivating and fulfilling than seeing your learners enjoy the activity and
learn something from it which I hope they Pay Forward .

5. Look and give the latest trend, common issues, and the developments in physical education
specially our today’s situation, how will you handle the situations (Pandemic) how do you
delve your desire to give a sufficient and quality services to your students? How do you make
them value the healthy living and to connect the dots for a much deeper understanding about
the core values of health and wellness? support your answers.

Answer:
Teaching physical education to 21st century learners is difficult because they are more
engaged with phones, computers, and social media, which causes a lack of interest in physical
activities. As a result, many teachers look for fun physical activities that can also develop the
learners' healthy lifestyle.
Here are several examples:
Roller skating improves balance and abdominal and lower-back muscle strength since you must
maintain a stable core to stay upright. Coordination is improved through coordinating balance
and leg action.
Yoga assists students in relaxing, relieving stress and anxiety, sleeping better, improving
emotional regulation, increasing empathy, and improving mood and affect. It also teaches kids
how to be more attentive, which is just one of the numerous ways we may teach mindfulness to
students.
Zumba- It develops the muscles and corrects the learners' posture. It can enhance flexibility and
teach students how to regulate their bodies. Zumba also has significant mental health advantages
and is an excellent stress reliever.
Swimming improves the learners' endurance, balance, strength, and flexibility.
Physical education classes were usually done outside and were socially engaging because
there were no limits such as having close contact with people. When the pandemic started, the
goal of PE was to teach pupils about health. It is a difficult task for the teachers. We can barely
keep track of the students. Regardless of the situation, the student's mode of independence has
expanded since the pandemic began. This pandemic causes us to be more concerned about our
health and to engage in more physical activities in our own unique way.
One of the most major impacts was on our educational system, or the way children learn.
Because everything is done online, students have a more difficult time absorbing information,
especially in topics where they need firsthand experience or practical applications to learn better,
such as Physical Education. Yes, students can learn about the concepts through textbooks and
teacher explanations, and they can take quizzes like which moves are locomotor or non-
locomotor, but they are likely to forget them after a while because they have not done them.
As a result, teachers assess and teach physical education lessons using video
performances. Students will be required to record themselves executing a specific task from their
course for a minute or two. They accomplish this with the support of their parents or, more often
than not, the Internet. While this is novel, it is not sufficient. They can practice several times to
achieve the ideal shot, but more often than not, they will do it only to comply and then forget the
lesson.
