Background Information for Learners


The Nature of Contemporary Art
Contemporary Art consists of expressive art in several forms that are created and produced in
the present specifically in the 21 st Century or roughly from 1960s to the current period. Aside from
those that we commonly have known as the visual art such as paintings, sculpture and the like, Digital
art has also become a unique way of expressing creative emotions using modern tools.
Contemporary art is a breakaway from the established mode of expression. The materials used
the subjects in focus as well as the unique ideas challenged the classics as it goes beyond the usual
nature of art and expression. Abstraction and symbolism become the basic future of the new era in
artistry. Symbolic creative expression became the fundamental nature of contemporary art as it became
free-spirited which is a distinct trait of the modern environment.

Literary Art – poetry, short stories, poems, novels and essay

- Guerilla life during the Japanese Occupation
2. Barter in Panay (1961) – Ricaredo Demetillo
- Shows the declaration of Martial Law
3. The Woman who had Two Navels – Nick Juaquin
- a story about a traumatic child when she found out that her father was an abortionist

o It is conceptual, innovative, expressive and experimental.
o It allows the viewers to participate in the experience and is urged to validate his/her own
beliefs and feelings.
o It evokes more intense emotions from its spectators.

The Salient features of Contemporary Art forms


• Most of the art forms are based on abstract expressionism.
• It leaves the mark of the works of contemporary art are changing and new technologies were
used day by day.
• It emphasizes the expressions of the self, emotions and manifests the inclusion of societal
issues and concerns.
• It can incorporate to other forms of arts, blending different media and techniques which
paved way to the so called Integrative Arts

Activity 3. Be a Production Designer!


Instructions: As a student, performances in school are likely to happen, your creativity and
resourcefulness are bound to unfold. However, because of this pandemic, it is not about to happen in
this situation. In this activity, your artistic capability will be of use.
Make a Collage from different available materials such as magazines, used papers, colored papers,
pictures, cardboards and adhesive. Use an oslo paper as your base. Be imaginative and create your own
scenario of a certain Festival in Pampanga. Write the Kind of Festival on the top of the oslo paper.
Reflection: Write your answers on a piece of paper:
1. Why does art go beyond the usual nature and expression?
2. How can you contribute in keeping the tradition alive?
3. Why is there a need for Festivities?
