PERSONAL ANALYSIS/INTERPRETATION

After reading "The Oilfield Labourers,” I was saddened by what kind of situation the
characters deal with in the story. It made me frightened about what the future might bring us. It all
started when the village of Yazid was washed out by fire, then some old mothers wished they were
dead, and when the old man died. It was so depressing. No wonder that the main character, Yazid,
was traumatized by what happened, to the point that he became kind of miserable as there was
nothing left for him. I also witnessed Yazid and his friends' hardships while they were working in
the oilfield. It was exhausting, not just physically but also mentally, considering what had
happened in their village. It also appears that Yazid was all by himself; it’s like he had no family
and was not afraid of dying. He was kind of obsessed with death, which makes his character a little
depressing. And at the end of the story, one of the laborers fell from the derrick and died. I
concluded that it was Yazid, and it was not an accident but an intentional one. He seemed strong,
but I could feel that he was in pain and wanted to end it. Thinking of what kind of life he had and
what happened in his village, where all his belongings were eaten by fire, where there was nothing
left for him, where he had a tragic incident in his past as his father committed suicide, and where
he was all alone, I can say that he was troubled inside and suffering mentally, and that made him
do that thing. I feel very sorry for him as life was so tough on him. It was really hard to be in that
kind of situation.

This story made me realize that yes, life is beautiful, but it can be tough too, and that we
have to be ready and strong to deal with whatever difficulties life might give us. Challenges are
one thing that is certain in life, and there will be a time that they will completely destroy us. But
we have to remember that there is always hope. We should always look on the brighter side of life,
even if it's hard. Challenges sometimes help us grow and learn valuable lessons. So, don't give up,
no matter what is going on around us. Whatever we are going through is just temporary. Keep in
mind that this is just a test.

Meanwhile, from another perspective, thinking about the main character in the story made
me realize how important our life is. Yes, we cannot control death, and that's why we should accept
the fact that everything here is temporary. There are reasons why we are still alive, and that is to
enjoy living together with our loved ones as well as continue life because we still have a goal and
mission to accomplish. And when Yazid and his friend were still talking about death, Jamal also
stated that people die in different ways. That is why we don’t know when our life will end, and
this is the reason why we are afraid of death is just because we don’t know when. This story gives
many reasons why we are still alive and the purpose of living. Many realizations have been left
behind, and questions that still bother our minds. Life is too short not to enjoy it. That’s why we
should enjoy life and continue living even though life is so challenging. We are here because we
have a purpose. So, continue pursuing everything, but don’t rush it. Because it takes time before
we get or finish one thing, and it ends with a meaningful journey of what life could be.

END OF STORY

Jamal and his friends were still shocked by what had happened. They couldn't believe it.
Yazid was dead, and they couldn't even recognize him. It's extremely depressing. By late
afternoon, they dug for his grave and buried Yazid’s body. “It's not an accident. I saw him.” Jamal
abruptly said in a grieving tone. “I saw him remove his safety buckle and let himself fall.” The
friends couldn't put into words how they felt about what Jamal had just said. They were saddened
and devastated by what had happened to their friend. “He ended his life in a way like his father
did, dying without having to suffer for long. Like what he said to me, death is necessary to sever
something. He was in pain. He did it to end it.”

Yazid seemed strong, but he was suffering inside. What kind of life he had, his past, and
what happened at the village had traumatized and triggered him. Nothing was left for him. He was
tired of life. For him, there is no reason to live anymore.
