My friends and I were at the beach when it happened . I was washing the sand off my shoes in the
water when I noticed the water was pulling back from the beach. Suddenly, I realized what was
happening . I shouted at my friends wildly. Before we knew it, we were running towards a cave at
the top of a nearby hill to find shelter. As we were climbing up the hill, a huge wave was forming in
the sea behind us. My heart was beating fast. We entered the cave. The waves were crashing on
the beach below. The noise was frightening. About an hour later, everything was quiet again. We
looked outside. People were crying for help. Some palm trees were lying flat in the water. It was
terrible! We ran home to see if our families were OK.
Past progressive
Form: was/were + main verb + -ing
Use: we use the past progressive to talk about actions in progress at a certain time in the past.

A: Miss Walters, I’m detective Holmes. I need to ask you some questions. What were you doing
when you heard the explosion?
B: Well, I was walking my dog down the street with my friend, Jack, when suddenly we heard a
loud explosion! Smoke and flames were coming out from the building. It was burning down!
People were screaming and shouting for help. Everyone was crying. It was horrible! While I
watching in shock, my dog Chester, was barking wildly. Suddenly, he ran toward the building!
A: Was he chasing something?
B: No, he wasn’t. Jack followed Chester and they both climbed up toward an open window on
the first floor. A boy was screaming for help. Jack and Chester helped him out. A little later the
firefighters and an ambulance arrived. Pieces of the building were falling and crashing to the
ground. It was so scary. The firefighters managed to get two people out before the building
collapsed. They are heroes.
