Definition of terms:
Masculinities a social, cultural, and historical construction of men dependent on and related to
other factors such as class, ethnicity, sexuality, age, and disability.
Hegemonic masculinity form of masculinity which is culturally dominant in a given setting.
Protest masculinity form of masculinity which is culturally dominant in marginalized setting.
Caring masculinity proposes that men are able to adopt what is viewed as traditionally feminine
characteristics.
 1970 studies of different aspect of manhood were made and the number of studies arose
dramatically.

Hierarchy and hegemony masculinity is multiple masculinities that vary across time, society,
culture, and the individual.
Collective masculinities
-masculine and feminine are the societies gender structures pattern of conduct.
MACULINITIES AND WELL-BEING
-strong associations between rigid norms about what it means to be a man and men’s negative
health practices and vulnerabilities (Barker et al. 2011).
FAMILY FORMATON, FATHERING, CAREGIGING, AND DOMESTIC ROLES
-men contribute to the “domestic enterprise” in important ways; providing financial support,
accompanying children in school or home.

SUMMARY
masculinity and men’s studies have been continuously developing from its inception and up to
present. The studies covered common themes of masculinities, different kinds of masculinity
such as hegemonic, protest, and caring masculinities and the relationship of these masculinities
to various aspect of life and the environment.
