Activity 2 - SM, Physics, EM

This document contains information about 4 situations involving physics concepts: 1) The meeting times and locations of two balls thrown vertically and horizontally. 2) The materials and volumes needed for a concrete mix with given specifications. 3) The velocities and displacements of a bullet impacting a pendulum. 4) Tensions in guy wires supporting a transmission tower and projectile motion up an inclined plane.

Activity 2

Situation 1. A ball is thrown vertically up into the air at 120 ft/s released on top of a building 60 ft high. Three seconds
later another ball is thrown at ground level at 150 ft/s. Use g = 32 ft/s².
1. When will the two balls meet after the first ball is thrown? 5.19s

2. Where will the two balls meet from the top of the building? 191.80 ft

3. What is relative velocity of the second ball with respect to the first ball when they meet? 126 ft/s

4. The crate, which has a mass of 100 kg, is subjected to the action of the two forces. If it is originally at rest,
determine the distance it slides in order to attain a speed of 6 m/s. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the
crate and the surface is μk = 0.2. Figure 1. 1.347 m

Situation 2. A concrete mix design consists of the following proportions: cement = 42 kg, sand = 95 kg, gravel = 130 kg
gravel, and water = 26 kg. The specific gravity of cement is 3.10, sand is 2.65, and gravel is 2.50. Moisture content is 3%
for sand and 5% for gravel. For a total concrete volume of 5 cu.m determine the following:
5. The number of bags of cement. 40

6. The actual volume of water needed. 0.65 cu.m

7. Total weight of sand assuming SSD conditions. 3731 kg

Situation 3. A 28-g rifle bullet traveling 190 m/s embeds itself in a 3.1-kg pendulum hanging on a 2.8-m-long string,
which makes the pendulum swing upward in an arc. Determine the:
8. velocity of the bullet and the pendulum after impact. 1.701 m/s

9. vertical component of the maximum displacement of the pendulum. 0.147 m

10. horizontal component of the maximum displacement of the pendulum. 0.895 m

Situation 3: A transmission tower is held by three guy wires attached to a pin at A and anchored by bolts at B, C, and D.
If the tension in wire AB is 630 lb, determine the:
11. vertical force P exerted by the tower on A (1,572.10 lb)
12. the tension in wire AC (467.42 lb)
13. the tension in wire AD (814.35 lb)
Activity 2

Situation 4: As shown, a projectile of weight W is fired from point O perpendicular to the inclined plane. It lands at a
distance of 70 m from O, as measured along the inclined plane. Determine the:
14. maximum height “h” reached by the projectile (33.05 m)
15. initial velocity Vo (27.59 m/s)
16. time the projectile reaches A (6.09 seconds)
