Task Two – Job Roles, Freelance Work
Job Roles
Go to the Progression in Creative Media Industries folder in Moodle
Choose the media sector or sectors which potentially interest you
Identify potential job roles within that sector or sectors which interest you
Identify the best route in to each job and any particular qualifications you
might need
If your chosen career progression is not featured in any of the sectors
available on Moodle (e.g, arts-based, music-based, performance-based)
then conduct your own research, but check first that it is a suitable
‘media’ choice.
If the chosen employment route has changed since Year One, highlight
why this might be.
If your chosen employment route is the same or similar to Year One,
highlight what you have learned and which skills you may still need to
improve upon
Upload your findings to your Year Two Weebly page for ‘Progression’
There is not a proposed word count, as the amount of information you
find and the number of potential job roles you chose, will determine what
and how much you write.
This will be useful for one to one tutorial discussions and will inform your
proposed UCAS application, or if your progression destination might be
an Apprenticeship or Internship
Before college I was quite set on animation. College hasn’t changed that
but I do now feel like it is a lot more possible. In the future I want to make
my own cartoon with my own characters. This would essentially mean I’d
need to be the director, writer, character designer, storyboard artist,
animator, editor and many other things. In my first year I had learned
how to use animate, improve at my skills, learned new skills (such as
tweening, puppet rigging, adding sound, etc.) and learned features to
make animation much easier. The skills I will need to improve on include
stop-mo (more accurate and consistent animation quality),
anatomy/facial expressions, sound design and writing.
Freelance Work
This part of the task will develop the knowledge and understanding
regarding Freelancing which you started in Year 1.
Go to the link on Moodle for ‘About Freelancing’
Watch the short video – ‘Starting out as a freelancer’ (you will require
headphones)
Identify key issues regarding working as a freelancer which are
mentioned by the people in the video
The key issues the freelancers mentioned was struggling to get work, and how
they would need to take any job they can get, paid or no, to get anywhere. It
can be quite scary and off-putting but you have to be resilient.
Read through the following key skills for freelancing and identify which
you feel you have improved upon in Year 1 of the course and those you
feel might need to be developed:
IT skills (e.g. using an Apple Mac, Word)
Technical skills (e.g. using cameras. editing software, Photoshop)
Interpersonal skills (e.g. problem-solving, using initiative, maintaining
focus, motivation, flexibility)
Communication skills (e.g. speaking, listening, working with others)
I think that in the first year my technical skills improved a lot. I was introduced
to many different types of adobe software and got to know them quite quickly.
I could improve on my interpersonal skills such as maintaining focus and
timekeeping.
On the same Screenskills link, read through the section called ‘Other
qualities needed for successful freelancing’ which include:
Passion
Financial drive
Motivation and discipline
Reputation
Flexibility
Sector knowledge
Put these ‘qualities’ in your own words and identify where your personal
strengths and areas for development may exist within these areas.
Passion is how much you care about what you’re doing. I am passionate about
everything and always try my best.
Financial drive is how willing you are to be financially successful. While I want
to have money, I don’t think it’s the be all end all. I’d rather have a career I
enjoy over being rich.
Motivation and discipline is being able to keep yourself focused and set
yourself rules. Keeping focus is something I’ve always struggled with so I
definitely need to improve here.
Reputation is what people think of you.
Flexibility is how well you can make time for yourself and make plan. I struggle
a bit with timekeeping so this is definitely something I need to improve on.
Sector knowledge is how much you know about your work industry. I know
quite a bit already about animation but of course there’s always more to learn.
Identify the creative media sector or sectors you might like to
freelance in
Identify the job role or roles you could apply yourself to for freelancing
opportunities
Identify opportunities which either exist now or in the near-future
where you could develop as a freelancer or build up your skills and
knowledge
Identify potential areas you could explore for freelance opportunities
Identify media platforms (such as social media, blogs, You Tube) which
you could use to promote yourself as a freelancer
You should be aiming for a MINIMUM of 400 words for ‘key issues’,
‘four key skills’, ‘other qualities’ and ‘freelancing opportunities’ combined.
You may write more if you wish. Upload your work to your Year Two
Weebly page for ‘Progression.
I am looking to work in animation in the future. Some job roles I find
interesting as a freelancer include animator, character designer,
commission artist and photo editor.
As an animator I could freelance so long as I have a computer with good
animation software and build up my skills more. Building a portfolio from
college and practicing outside of college could help too. The skills I
would need as an animator include drawing, time management, patience
and imagination. A good media platform to promote my work on would
be YouTube.
As a character designer people could commission me to design
characters for them. This is quite popular with writers and people who
play Dungeons and Dragons. People would give me references and
inspirations and notes on the character and I would use them to create a
character design. I think that I could do it now so long as I keep
practicing drawing. I would promote myself using Twitter or Instagram.
As a commission artist I would be doing things similar to a character
designer but a lot more general. People would commission me to make
art of anything within reason. This would require good drawing skills too
so I would practice a lot before taking commissions, or do free ones as
practice and to help promote myself. I would promote on Twitter and
Instagram as well.
As a photo editor I would need good photoshop skills and patience. If I
were to freelance in this industry I would be editing photos to match the
requests of my clients. This is probably one I would need to practice at
the most as my photoshop skills aren’t as good as my drawing skills. I
would probably promote my edits using Instagram or Imigur.
