Syllabus of Courses to be offered by ISI Kolkata

(all courses are core/compulsory)


1. Stat1: Stochastic Processes and Applications
a. Basic Probability: Concepts of experiments, outcomes, sample space, events,
discrete sample spaces, probability models; random variables: discrete &
continuous, some probability distributions; conditional probability, Bayes
theorem (5 weeks).
b. Stochastic Process: Markov chains, classification of states, stationary
distribution, limit theorems; Poisson process; illustrations and applications (5
weeks).
c. Introduction to Time Series: Components of time series, smoothing,
autocorrelation, partial autocorrelation; AR, MA, ARMA and ARIMA models;
applications; forecasting (6 weeks).

2. Stat2: Statistical Structures in Data


a. Basic Statistics: Frequency table, histogram, measures of location, measures
of spread, skewness, kurtosis, percentiles/quantiles, box plot, correlation,
probability distribution as a statistical model, fitting probability distributions,
empirical distribution, checking goodness of fit through plots and tests (5
weeks).
b. Basic Multivariate Statistics: Representation of multivariate data; conditional
distribution, bivariate distribution, multivariate distribution; multinomial
distribution, multivariate normal distribution, sample mean and sample
variance-covariance matrix, basic tests, concepts of location and depth in
multivariate data (5 weeks).
c. Structures in multivariate data: Principal components analysis, factor analysis,
multiple correlation, multidimensional scaling. (6 weeks).

3. Stat3: Inference
a. Data Collection & Visualization: Concepts of measurement; scales of
measurement; design of data collection formats with illustrations; data quality
and issues with data collection systems with examples from business;
cleaning and treatment of missing data; principles of data visualization and
different methods of presenting data in business analytics (5 weeks).
b. Methods of Estimation: Estimation in the context of business analytics;
estimation as data summarization and inferential tool; concepts of population,
sample and estimators; criteria for good estimators – concepts of
unbiasedness, consistency and their implications; illustration of sample mean
and sample proportion through Monte Carlo simulations, introduction to
different methods of estimation; concepts of sampling distributions of a
statistic; confidence interval and their usages; examples in real life analytic
scenarios (5 weeks).
c. Test of Hypotheses and postulate verification: Hypotheses testing in the
context of business analytics; different types of statistical hypotheses; test
statistics and reference distributions; concepts of significance and power;
different parametric tests for equality of means, variances and proportions;
illustrations through simulated data; non-parametric tests including
permutation tests; describing systems using random variables; examples of
formulation of business problems in terms of hypotheses and system models
(6 weeks).

4. CS1: Computing for Data Sciences


a. Computer Package: Usage of R with illustrations (5 weeks).
b. Concept of Computation: Concept of algorithms; concepts of convergence
and complexity with illustrations; some numerical methods e.g., Newton-
Raphson, steepest ascent, searching algorithms (5 weeks).
c. Computing methodologies: Monte Carlo simulations of random numbers and
various statistical methods, computation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors,
memory handling strategies for big data (6 weeks).

5. CS2: Fundamentals of data base systems


a. Basic concepts: Different data models, ER and EER diagrams, schema, table
(5 weeks).
b. Relational data base: Relational data bases, normalization, SQL, parallel and
distributed data base (5 weeks).
c. Implementation: Oracle, concept of data base security (6 weeks).
