Lesson Overview….
Task: Take time to read and understand the lesson.
Introduction to Medical Transcription
What is Medical Transcription?
Medical Transcription - is defined as an allied health profession, which deals
with the process of converting voice-recorded reports into text format. These voice-
recorded reports are dictated by physicians or other healthcare professionals.
Medical transcription is one of the specializations in Technology and
Livelihood Education. This book aims to equip Senior High School Techvoc learners
with the needed skills to use business technology in corresponding to customers’
needs and using medical terminology to carry out tasks.
In recent years, managing medical records have changed considerably. Apart
from a few, small clinics mainly in small towns and rural areas, paper recording is
now a thing of the past. There is now a demand for electronic records. Filing
cabinets are giving way to desktop computers where patient records are processed
and archived “digitally.” This digital format gives the treating physician an immediate
review of patient information. Medical transcriptionists (MTs) today have personal
computers and Internet available not only as a web resource, but also as a working
platform. Technology has become so sophisticated that Medical Transcription
services now work closely with computer programmers to stream voice in and
accomplish seamless data transfers through network interfaces. These changes
allow Medical Transcriptionists to carry out their main tasks:
1. Transforming dictated medical reports clearly and accurately into written
computerized records for the purpose of providing references, archives, and
legal proof of medical advice.
2. Transcribing, proofreading, and editing complex medical reports for a broad
range of clinical specialties.
In this course, you will be guided so you may have the needed knowledge and
skills to obtain a Medical Transcription National Certificate Level II (NC II). This
module will cover the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) which
includes the Core Competencies. In addition, you will be taught how to have a career
that deals with encoding patient assessment, therapeutic procedures, medical
history, and treatment from hospitals and other medical institutions. Moreover,
various work settings will be made available to you:
You can work in an office as a direct service provider to doctors and other
medical practitioners or you can work in the convenience of your home as a
subcontractor.
Now that you have the core competencies of medical transcription in accordance
with the Training Regulations by the Technical Education and Skills Development
Authority (TESDA) as well as the knowledge, skills, and right attitude, you can be
employed as a Medical Transcriptionist or just opt to become an entrepreneur and
set up your very own Medical Transcription office.
MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION EQUIPMENT
• Computer - It is a machine that can follow instructions to alter
data in a desirable way and to perform at least some operations
without human intervention. Computers represent and manipulate
text, graphics, symbols, music, numbers, and other data format.
• Digital Foot Pedal – A digital foot pedal is a tool often used in
medical transcription. It is connected to the computer
via USB port and rests under the desk. It is tapped using
the foot in order to start, stop, pause, rewind, or fast forward
the recording.
• Headphone – This is a pair of small speakers that are designed
to be held in place to the user’s ears. This aids in listening closely
to the dictated materials.
• Speaker - Speakers are popular output devices used with computer
systems. They receive audio input from the computer's sound card
and produce audio output in the form of sound waves.
• Voice Recorder - A voice recorder or a dictation machine is a device
to record speech or other sounds, and then play it back.
• AVR - Short for automatic voltage regulator, AVR is a hardware device
used to maintain a voltage to electronic devices.
• UPS - An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a device that allows
a computer to keep running for at least a short time when the primary
power source is lost. UPS devices also provide protection from
power surges.
• Printer - A printer is a peripheral device linked in computer used for
printing text or pictures onto paper.
• Modem – a device that converts signals produced by one type of device
(such as a computer) to a form compatible with another (such as a
telephone) and that is used especially to transmit and receive information
between computers via landlines
• Router – a device that mediates the transmission routes of data packets
over an electronic communications network (such as the Internet)
EXTERNAL PARTS OF COMPUTER
A. Computer Monitor - A computer monitor is an output device that
displays information in pictorial form.
B. Keyboard - A computer keyboard is a typewriter-style device
which uses an arrangement of buttons or keys to act as mechanical
levers or electronic switches.
C. Mouse - A computer mouse is a hand-held pointing device that
detects two-dimensional motion relative to a surface. This motion is
typically translated into the motion of a pointer on a display, which allows
a smooth control of the graphical user interface of a computer.
D. Computer System Unit (CSU) - The system unit, also known
as a "tower" or "chassis," is the main part of a desktop computer.
It includes the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and other components.
The system unit also includes the case that houses the internal
components of the computer.
INTERNAL PARTS OF COMPUTER
A. Central Processing Unit (CPU) – A central processing unit (CPU),
also called a central processor or main processor, is the electronic
circuitry within a computer that executes instructions that make up
a computer program. The CPU performs basic arithmetic, logic, controlling,
and input/output (I/O) operations specified by the instructions in the program.
B. Random Access Memory (RAM) –is a form of computer memory that
can be read and changed in any order, typically used to store working data
and machine code. A random-access memory device allows data items to
be read or written in almost the same amount of time irrespective of the
physical location of data inside the memory.
C. Optical Disk Drive (ODD) – is a disc drive that uses laser light or
electromagnetic waves within or near the visible light spectrum as part
of the process of reading or writing data to or from optical discs.
Some drives can only read from certain discs, but recent drives can
both read and record, also called burners or writers
(since they physically burn the organic dye on write-once CD-R,
DVD-R and BD-R discs).
D. Power Supply – is a hardware component of a computer that
supplies all other components with power. The power supply
converts a 110-115- or 220-230-volt AC (alternating current) into
a steady low-voltage DC (direct current) usable by the computer
and rated by the number of watts it generates.
E. Hard Disk Drive (HDD) – A computer hard disk drive (HDD)
is a non-volatile memory hardware device that controls the
positioning, reading and writing of the hard disk, which furnishes
data storage. Hard disk drives are commonly used as the main
storage device in a computer.
HARDWARE TOOLS
1. Hand tools
• Flat head screwdriver – is used to loosen or tighten slotted screws.
• Phillips head screwdriver – is used to loosen or tighten
cross-headed screws.
• Needle-nose pliers – is used to hold small parts.
• Wire cutter – is used to strip and cut wires.
• Tweezers – is used to manipulate small parts.
2. Cleaning tools
• Lint-free cloth – is used to clean different computer components
without scratching or leaving debris.
• Compressed air – Is used to blow away dust and debris from different
computer parts without touching the components.
• Cable ties – is used to bundle cables neatly inside and outside
of a computer.
• Parts organizer – is used to hold screws, jumpers, fasteners, and
other small parts and prevents them from getting mixed together.
