Basic Quantum GIS (QGIS)

Topic 7. Map lay outing

1. To start map lay outing click “Ctrl+P” or go to the icon beside save. Create a layout
name and click “OK”.

2. Layout window will appear. It has its own


tools and panel. Tool bar1,
Canvas2, Item3, and Item

3. Change the page size to A3 (standard map size). Right click in the canvas and select 3

“Page properties”. 1
4. To add Map, click this icon and draw a box in the canvas.

To move the whole map in the canvas, click “Select/Move item”.

To move the content of the map, click “Move item content”. This is use to chance the
scale and to center the data layer in the canvas.
Scroll is used to adjust the scale of the
map. To adjust the scale slowly click
“Ctrl+scroll”.

5. To add Map title, click “Add Label” and draw like a text box. In item properties you can
change the text, font size, style, alignment, and color.

To add borders in label, scroll down in Item


properties panel and check the frame.
Color and thickness can be manipulated
here too.

6. Legend is the list of symbols that appear on the map. To add legend, click “Add legend”
and drag a box.

To edit the content of legend to go “Legend items” located in Item properties. Un


checked the “auto update box” and remove the
unnecessary layers. To delete layer, click
minus sign.

In the “Main properties” of the legend set the “Title” as “Legend”.

To edit the font of the legends content, go to “Fonts and Text Formatting”. “Legend Title”
is the “Title” in main properties, “Subgroup heading”
is the layer name, and “Item Labels” is
the content of the layer.

To hide the subgroup heading right click the layer in “Legend items” and check “Hidden”

7. Scale bar is use to shows the relationship


between distances on the map
and the real world. Click “Add
scale bar” and draw a box to add
scale bar in the canvas.

To edit scale bar, go to item properties. You can adjust the segments, change the style.
etc.

8. North arrow is the symbol that shows the


direction of north on the map,
thereby showing how the map is
oriented. Click “Add North Arrow”
and draw a box.

To edit north arrow, go to “Item Properties”. You can choose SVG image (built in in
QGIS) and Raster image (import image) to input as north arrow. You can also edit placement,
and parameters like color and width.

Topic 9. Saving of Project and exporting a map layout

1. To save a project, click the save icon located in tool bars. Locate it to a location you
want to save and create a file name of the project.

2. To export may layout, click “Export as Image” and save it in a certain folder.

Image export option window will appear in the screen. Export resolution represent that
quality of the image after being exported where 300 dpi is standard. The higher dpi the better
and larger file. Click “Save” after choosing the desired dpi.
