TOEIC SPEAKING TEST

Content and Format of the TOEIC Speaking Test

The TOEIC Speaking test assesses English-language skills that are used in daily life and the
workplace. Test takers have to respond to real-world questions and scenarios in spoken
language. The tests use common everyday vocabulary, phrases and key expressions used in the
workplace environment.

The TOEIC Speaking Test Format

§ Content: 11 questions
§ Time: approximately 20 minutes
§ Score scale: 0–200
Below is an overview of the TOEIC® Speaking test, which includes 11 questions that measure
various aspects of your speaking ability. For each question, you will be given specific directions,
including the time allowed for preparing and speaking your response. The test takes about 20
minutes.

It is to your advantage to say as much as you can in the time allowed. It is also important that you
speak clearly and answer each question according to directions.

Questions Task Description

1–2 Read a text aloud § You will read out loud the text on the screen.

§ Then you will have 45 seconds to read the text out loud.

3 Describe a picture § You will describe the picture on your screen in as much
detail as you can.

4–6 Respond to questions§ You will answer three questions. No preparation time
is provided.
§ You will have 15 seconds to respond to questions 4
and 5.

Online Scoring Network (OSN) and the ETS Rating Process

The TOEIC Speaking and Writing test-rating process takes place on the ETS Online Scoring
Network (OSN). OSN is a secure Internet system that provides a platform for the display of test-
taker responses, support materials for raters, and tools for monitoring the accuracy of raters.

Speaking Test Directions

This is the TOEIC Speaking test. This test includes 11 questions that measure different aspects
of your speaking ability. The test lasts approximately 20 minutes.

For each type of question, you will be given specific directions, including the time allowed for

Directions: In this part of the test, you will read aloud the text on the screen. You will have 45
seconds to prepare. Then you will have 45 seconds to read the text aloud.

then my card didn’t come out of the machine. I got my receipt and my money but then my bank
card just didn’t come out. And I’m leaving for my vacation tonight so I’m really going to need it....I
had to get to work early this morning, and couldn’t wait around for the bank to open....Could you
call me here at work, and let me know how
to get my bank card back? I’m really busy today, and really need you to call me soon. I can’t go

QUESTION 11: EXPRESS AN OPINION


Directions: In this part of the test, you will give your opinion about a specific topic. Be sure to
say as much as you can in the time allowed. You will have 15 seconds to prepare. Then you will
have 60 seconds to speak.

(Narrator): Some people prefer to take a job that does not pay well but does provide a lot of
time off from work. What is your opinion about taking a job with a low salary that has a lot of
vacation time? Give reasons for your opinion.

Narrator: Some people wish they could live in warm climates all year round. These places get very
