STS - Intellectual Revolution

The document discusses intellectual ideas and revolutions. [1] Intellectual ideas were often controversial because they proposed paradigm shifts that contradicted previous beliefs and realities. [2] However, new discoveries were eventually accepted when they underwent rigorous research and analysis providing abundant data, even if initially contradictory. Examples include Darwinian and Freudian revolutions. [3] Intellectual revolutions transform societies by expanding critical thinking to see things differently and cultivate equal progress through continued evaluation and invention for the benefit of all.

1) Why do you think were most intellectual ideas controversial?

- Intellectual ideas were controversial because they were abstract, far removed from
reality, and people believed that a paradigm shift will occur, or a state in which ideas
contradict the so-called fixed or unshakable ideas from previous discoveries or beliefs.
Thus, people were reluctant to rethink their views and opinions because things may
alter in some ways, like reality or their behavior.

2) Why did the people accept these new discoveries despite being contradictory
to what was widely accepted at that time?
- A discovery must go through a rigorous study or research process to be valid and
have proof. This is the primary justification for why new discoveries are accepted even
when they go against previously held beliefs. Despite being the reverse of the initial
discovery, the new discovery is genuine and acceptable due to the abundance of data
and analysis from extensive research. New discoveries like the Darwinian Revolution,
which sparked a massive debate between science and religion, were later accepted,
as people realized that the church's doctrine and Darwin's theory of evolution coexist
and are not in conflict. Same with the Freudian Revolution, where Sigmund Freud was
widely criticized, but soon enough, Psychoanalysis's ideas were finally understood by
the public, leading to psychology's classification as a science.

3) How do intellectual revolutions transform societies?

- Intellectual revolutions transform societies through the utilization and expansion of
our critical thinking skills. This revolution is an ongoing process of inventing and
evaluating things for the good of all. It continues to carve out the world that we live in
today. Intellectual revolutions cultivate our minds to see things differently and evolve
into a direction where each one of us can progress with equal opportunity in a
changing or developing society.
