General Physics 1 - PT#1

1. The document describes an experiment measuring the length and width of a rectangular object using both the metric and English measurement systems. Measurements were taken over multiple trials and averages were calculated. 2. Conversion factors between measurement units were determined and percent errors were calculated. 3. Additional measurements were made of the height of the tallest family member using different units of the metric and English systems.

Introduction: In the history of measurement, many distance units have been used which
were based on human body parts such as the cubit, hand and foot and these units varied in
length by area and location. In the last 18 th century the metric system came into use and
has been adopted to varying degrees in almost all countries in the world.

Time passed by and the use of ruler was discovered. A ruler is used to measure length and
to draw lines. It is a common tool used in geometry and technical drawing, as well as the
engineering and construction industries.

Objectives: At the end of the experiment, the students will be able to:
1. differentiate metric system from English system form of measurement;
2. use the ruler accurately in measuring length of any rectangular object both in
the form of metric and English system of measurement ;and
3. convert one unit to another unit.

Material/s:
ruler
any rectangular object

Procedure/s:
Set-up No.1
Using Ruler
1. Examine the ruler and be sure to know the metric and English divisions.
2. Measure the length and width of the chosen rectangular object in cm.
Record your observations.
3. Repeat three times and obtain the average as true values for the length and the
width.
4. Repeat the measurement of the length and the width in inches and the average as
well.

Set-up No.2
Using Ruler
1. Find the tallest member of the family.
2. Measure the height of the tallest member using the ruler. Record your
observations.

Required Formula/s:

Area = L x W

experimental value−accepted value

% Error= x 100
accepted value

2 6.77 in 3.7in

3 6.77 in 3.7 in

Average: 6.77 in 3.7 in

Therefore1in= _______2.5________ cm True value, 1 in = 2.54 ___ cm

Amount of error = ___0.04_________ cm Percent of error = ___1.57_____ %
Area of the block in in²= ____24.9___ in² Area in cm²= ___167.04____cm²
Therefore, 1 in²= ________6.25__ cm² True value, 1 in²= 6.45_____ cm²
Amount of error= ______0.2______ cm² Percent of error= ___3.10____ %

TALLEST MEMBER OF THE FAMILY

Height in inches : 59 inches

Height in feet : 4.9 feet

Height in millimeter : 1,493.5 millimeter

Height in centimeter : 149.35 centimeter

Conclusion:
Therefore, I conclude that random error is always present in measurement
and it refers to the statistical fluctuations in the measured data due to the precision limitations
of the measurements device while systematic errors are caused by the imperfect calibration of
measurement instruments or imperfect methods of observation.

Questions: (For numbers 2 to 5, final answers must be written in two decimal places.)

1. What is the difference between Metric System and English System of

Measurement?
•Whereas most countries use the metric system which includes measuring units of meters
and grams, in the United States, the imperial system is used where things are measured in
feet, inches, and pounds.

2. Daniel is delivering a load of goods from Cebu City to Lapu-Lapu City, and then in
Lapu-Lapu City he is picking up another load to deliver to Compostela. The distance
from Cebu City to Lapu-Lapu City is 0.019 Mm and the distance from Lapu-Lapu City
to Compostela is 20.5 mi. The odometer in Daniel’s truck records distance in
kilometers. What is the total distance he will travel in kilometers?

3. An athlete can run covering the 200 yards in 18 seconds. How much time would it
take him more or less in 150 meter dash?

4. The density of balsa wood is 7.8 pound per cubic foot. What is the weight in
kilograms, of a piece of balsa wood that is 4.0in by 6.0in by 20.0in?
5. Gazinni went on a vacation and left her dog to her neighbour, Samantha.
Samantha asked her to charge it for P12.00 per hour. If Gazinni left her dog there for 3.25
days, how much was her bill?

NOTE: For numbers 2 to 5, write your solutions in a piece of paper or you may have it in MS
Word. Take a picture of your solutions, and attach it under the word problems with its
designated number. BOX YOUR FINAL ANSWERS.
