Little Joe II Program Test Data Book, Revision C

The document details test results for the Algol ID Mod I solid rocket motor program. Three full-scale motors were fired to demonstrate performance and determine characteristics. Component tests of igniters, nozzles, chambers, seals, and destruct systems were also performed. Motor performance was consistent between tests with less than 0.6 seconds difference in burn time and less than 201 lbf difference in average thrust.

D E S W C T UNIT DEVELOPMENT AND TEST RESULTS

go]- s
A destruct unit f o r the Algol I D rocket motor was developed and

s a t i s f a c t o r i l y tested during the program,

The destruct u n i t consists of two

linear shaped charges fastened t o the motor chamber exterior 180 degrees apart, When t h e u n i t i s actuated on an unpressurized chamber, two cuts, each approximately
LOO i n , i n length, are produced.

During one t e s t , the destruct u n i t was actuated

on a pressurized chamber and the e n t i r e chamber was destructed.

A test program was conducted i n four phases:
(1) the destruct system

cut witness plates t o demonstrate the capability of t h e l i n e a r shaped charge; (2) a t e s t f i r i n g of 14 destruct u n i t s a d a harness assembly was conducted t o simulate the destruct system on a seven-motor configuration L i t t l e Joe E1 vehicle;

(3) a pressurized chamber

wets destructed; and (4) the chamber of motor G - 7 w a s

cut by a destruct unit following the f i r i n g of the motor under sea-level conditions.

8 e 2 Technical Discussion

9 2 1 Concept Considerat ions

Three concepts were considered i n the development of the destruct

unit.

I n the first concept, proposed by Aerojet, two parallel-shaped charges, 6 in. This

apart, were attached t o the side of the chamber i n a race-way assembly.

configuration w a s designed t o produce two p a r a l l e l cuts approximately 10 . t ' f

long.

The second concefl., i n i t i a t e d at the direction of NASA, resulted i n the design of

a hoop-shapd charge which was attached t o the forward head of the chamber.

The

hoop-shaped charge w a s t o be capable of separating the forward dome from the chamber, Fabrication of t h i s destruct system was started but w a s discontinued

a t the direction of NASA because the chamber heads might damage the L i t t l e Joe I1 vehicle payload when the heads became separated fromthe chambers.

In the t h i r d

concept, i n i t i a t e d at the direction of NASA, two single-linear shaped charges are used. Each chaxge is 8 f t i n length and mounted 180 degrees apart on the These charges produce longitudinal perforations at

forward end of the chamber.
