0. INTRODUCTION
This guide has been written for people who want to use Diagbox on their current, everyday
laptop, rather than an older netbook with Peugeot Planet.

Planet is a fine diagnostic tool, but is now limited to older cars.

If you need to diagnose something newer than 2009 then you really need Diagbox.
Diagbox 7 used to be the most common version to use, but that only covers cars
manufactured up to July 2015.
WHICH DIAGBOX 9?
It seems there are many free sources of the software out there, but a number of them
require a subscription or activation fee, which is chargeable – anywhere from 20 to 60
euros.
This guide covers a version of Diagbox that runs virtually. The software has been fully setup
and activated, so there should be no cost in using it for diagnostics.
In this guide I will be using the FANTOMEL / MR RORRY free virtual version – V9.68. This
appears to be a clean, English install of the operating system (Windows 7 64 bit) and
Diagbox.

PROS AND CONS – VIRTUAL VS. ACTUAL INSTALLATION

If you’ve used Planet or Diagbox on an older laptop, no doubt it would have been installed
directly onto your machine, just like any other piece of software.
Running it virtually has the advantage that it isn’t cluttering up your computer. Diagbox is a
very clumsily written piece of software. Take a look at this screenshot – this is a laptop with
Diagbox supposedly uninstalled from the machine – several folders and hundreds of files
left undeleted:

You also don’t have to worry about all the complex requirements of installation – WIFI
disabled, AV disabled and so on. Its easy to setup - just download and run, and it’s already
activated.
It also means that you’re not excluded if you own a Mac or use Linux on your laptop.
The only drawback is that virtualisation needs a lot of processing power. A core i3 laptop
will work, but will run much better with an i5 or i7 laptop. If you find Diagbox slow then it
might be a case of doing the standard install directly onto the machine and paying for
activation.
1. DOWNLOAD
You will need to download three items – 7ZIP, VMware Player, and the Diagbox files – all
freely available from the following locations:
7ZIP https://www.7-zip.org/

VMware Player www.vmware.com

Diagbox: https://mega.nz/folder/FwMkSZJa#tzQszuFExpXxDYEb3Hy43Q

Alt. location: https://mega.nz/file/qtNESCwC#AQ13ZWbnoCukTp1xc6SwfUzgnS7z3-bdBnBCR2kkuz8

Once downloaded, install 7ZIP and VMware Player and reboot.

Now open the .7Z file. All you need to do is right-click the file, hover over 7ZIP in the menu
and click EXTRACT FILES.
Click OK and then enter the password “fantomel” and let it extract the files.
You should now have a folder containing the following:

You can delete the “player” folder as we’ve already downloaded and installed the latest
VMware player.
Now create a folder in your DOCUMENTS folder – I called mine DIAGBOX FANTOMEL

Copy the two DIAGBOX_968 files into that folder:

2. RUNNING
When the files have been copied, start up the VMware player with the shortcut on the
desktop, then go FILE – OPEN or and click OPEN A VIRTUAL MACHINE:

Browse to your documents folder and then the “Diagbox Fantomel” folder to find this file:
You should now see this screen:

At this point I clicked here to edit the settings, 2Gb of RAM is a little low.
I set the RAM to 4Gb.
If you have more than 8Gb in your laptop you might want to select more, but do follow the
advice given by the player.

Click OK to return to the main menu then click PLAY VIRTUAL MACHINE
This box should then appear, make sure you click “I MOVED IT”

Windows should then start up and you’ll see the familiar Windows 7 desktop with
Fantomel’s wolf background image on screen.
3. INSTALLING THE LEXIA CABLE DRIVERS
Now find and plug in your Lexia cable into a USB port.
A pop-up box should appear asking if you want to install the hardware on your laptop, or
the Virtual Machine:

Select CONNECT TO A VIRTUAL MACHINE and click OK

You should then see the drivers install OK:

To check the drivers are installed OK and the virtual install can see your cable, double click
the PSA INTERFACE CHECKER on the desktop then click ACTIVATE:
4. RUNNING DIAGBOX
Plug in the Lexia cable into the ODB port of your car and turn on the ignition (second
position if it has one – the one before starting)

Double click the Diagbox 9.68 shortcut on the desktop

After a moment you should see the loading screen:

Then the Diagbox start page:

Click the marque you want to diagnose, then select your car:
Select the correct version of your model and it should then pick up the VIN and ask you for
the DAM code. Its usually on the door pillar. In this example its 1032.
