The Dutch Revolt

The document summarizes the key events of the Dutch Revolt from the 1550s to the 1650s. It began when Charles V abdicated in 1555 and was succeeded by Phillip II, whose harsh laws against Protestants led to iconoclasm and uprisings in the 1560s. In the 1570s, the Dutch defeated Spanish troops on ice skates and the "Iron Duke" left the Netherlands. The northern provinces declared independence in 1581 while the southern provinces remained loyal to Spain. After 80 years of fighting and the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, the Republic of the Seven United Provinces gained authoritative recognition, ending the revolt, though the southern provinces stayed under Spanish rule.
