BASIC CALCULUS MODULE 4th QTR

This document provides an introduction to derivatives. It discusses the foundational concepts of limit and continuity that form the basis of calculus. The document then outlines 11 rules of differentiation, including the power rule, constant multiple rule, sum and difference rule, product rule, quotient rule, and chain rule. Examples are provided to illustrate how to apply each rule to compute the derivatives of various functions, such as algebraic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Students are given tasks to practice applying the new differentiation rules and completing a table matching functions with their derivatives.

Standing at 829.8 meters, the Burj Khalifa is the tallest man made structure in the world.
This mega-monument is a living testimony of the nature of humanity to challenge the limit of its
capability. Like Burj Khalifa, necessity and the limitless innovation of human mind created the
ideas of calculus. While the early development of calculus was not straightforward, the modern
way of approaching it is through the idea of a limiting process. This basic idea is the building
block of the main ideas in calculus. In this chapter, you will learn the concepts of limit and
continuity. (Versoza et. Al, Basic Calculus, Vibal, 2016)

PRETEST
Let’s find out how much you already know about this module. Write T if the statement if
True and F if false.

LESSON Learning Module 2:

1 RULES OF DIFFERENTIATION

1. Illustrate different differentiation rules;

2. Apply differentiation rules in computing the derivative of algebraic,
exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric functions and inverse functions

2
BASIC CALCULUS
STEM 11 and GAS 12
Unit 1: DERIVATIVES

Task 1. Find the derivatives of the functions from the first principle. Write the
solution in the box.

F(x) = x3 – 27 1
F(x) =
Solution: x2
Solution:

Task 2. Discover the other differentiation rules that make calculations easier. Find
out about the constant, constant time function, sum or difference, product rule,
quotient rule and chain rule of differentiation.

1.1. a) From the different differentiation rules stated, what do you think best de-
scribe the given functions :
f(x) = 4x2 , g(x) = 2x3, h(x) = 3x4

b) Compare the results with the derivatives of x2, x3, and x4 obtained earlier. What
do you think is the derivative of h(x)?
f’(x) = 8x g’(x)= 6x² h’(x) = ________
c) Copy and complete:
“If f(x) = cu(x) , then f’(x) = ________________________”

1.2. a) From the different differentiation rules stated what do you think best
describe the given functions :
f(x) = 4x2 + 2x, g(x) = 2x3 + 3x

b) Compare the results with the previous activity, what do you think is the
derivative of h(x)?
f’(x) = 8x + 2, g’(x) = ___________
c) Copy and complete:
“If f(x) = u(x) + v(x) , then f’(x) = _______________”

DERIVATIVES OF A FUNCTION
The basic rules of differentiation are presented here along with several examples.
Remember that if y = f(x) is a function then the derivatives of y can be represented
dy df
by dx or y’ or f’ or dx

Rule 1: The Derivative of a Constant

The derivative of a constant is zero.
f(x) = c then f’ = 0

Example: Differentiate k(x) = 30, k’(x) = 0

Rule 2: The Power Rule

The derivative of xn is nxn- 1

dy
Example: Differentiate y = x4= dx = 4x4 -1 = 4x3

Rule 3: The Derivative of a Constant times a Function

The derivative of kf(x), where k is a constant, is kf’ (x).

Example. Differentiate y = 3x² . In this case f(x) = x² and k = 3, therefore the

derivative is 3(2x2- 1) = 6x

Rule 4: The Derivative of a Sum or Difference

df
If f(x) = h(x) ± g(x) = dx = h’(x) ± g’(x)

Rule 5: The Product Rule

If f and g are differentiable functions, then
d
= [ f ( x ) g (x) ] = f(x) g’(x) + f’(x) g(x)
dx

Rule 6: The Quotient Rule

If f and g are differentiable functions, then

d
dx [ ]
f (x)
= g(x ) =
g ( x ) f ' ( x ) −f ( x ) g '( x)
[ g (x)]
