Week 2 Teachning and Learning 21st Century Skills

The document discusses emerging trends in instructional delivery. It provides information on a grade 8 population, including the means of travel to school, household members who can provide instructional support, and preferred learning modality. It then lists various online resources related to communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. The document outlines topics that will be covered, including the 4Cs (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity). It discusses ensuring the development of critical thinking skills in Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health (MAPEH) class and provides sample application activities.

“Twenty-first-century learning embodies an approach to teaching that marries content to
skill. Without skills, students are left to memorize facts, recall details for worksheets, and
relegate their educational experience to passivity.”

focus on determining trustworthy sources and factual
information to separate it from the misinformation that
floods the Internet.

life. These intangibles focus on both personal and

SEL DURING THE PANDEMIC
✴ The coronavirus and other recent events have put an enormous strain on
families nationwide.
✴ How can we support children who may be struggling with anxiety,
depression, trauma, fear, food insecurity, or homelessness as a result of
the current crises?
✴ During these uncertain times, it is critical that we find ways to effectively
manage and reduce stress.
✴ It is also critical that we help students do the same. Just like with adults,
if students’ stress goes unmanaged, it can lead to anxiety and depression
and can cause harmful physical effects. It can also increase students’ risk
of dropping out, substance abuse, and suicide.
✴ As teachers, we are in a unique position to provide stability and support
to your students and their families during uncertain times. One of the best
ways we can help students is by looking after their social-emotional health.

Sternberg’s Successful
Intelligence
& WICS Model
After suffering from test anxiety and doing poorly
on an exam, he realized that the test was not an
accurate measure of his actual knowledge and
abilities.
He proposed the Successful Intelligence Theory
and the WICS (Wisdom, Intelligence, Creativity,
Synthesized) Model.
“The skills people need to succeed in their
careers do not always closely resemble
the skills needed to succeed in college
courses, especially introductory courses.
Life rarely presents multiple-choice or
short-answer problems.”

Task #3 Create a poster/write a song or poem to stand up

against bullying. CREATIVITY

Task #4 Make a plan for a teacher to implement or do to

address or handle bullying in her classroom. PRACTICALITY
“The ability to succeed in life, given one’s own goals, within
one’s environmental contexts.”
It is maximizing one’s own strengths not only to adapt to one’s
environment, but to also contribute significantly to the society.

How to teach ANALYTICALLY?
Make your students use critical thinking. Design activities that provide opportunity for
your learners to:
• Analyze (Analyze the development of the character of Ibarra in Noli Me Tangere)
• Critique (Critique the design and features of the latest smart phone model)
• Judge (Judge the artistic merits of Filipino cartoonist, Larry Alcala’s “Slice of Life”)
• Compare and contrast (Compare and contrast the Italian approaches of Montessori
and Reggio Emilia in early childhood education)
• Evaluate (Evaluate the validity of the theory of evolution; write a term paper on this)
• Assess (Assess the strategy of the Manila City government to improve the traffic
situation around the city)
How to teach CREATIVELY?
It is important for you to encourage and sustain your students’ creative ideas. Remember to be an
example to them by taking the risk to share your own creative ideas. Think out of the box.
• Create (Create an alternative ending to Florante at Laura)
• Invent (Invent a dialogue that would transpire of Jose Rizal and Ninoy Aquino met)
• Discover (Discover a way to explain why heavy ships float at sea)
• Imagine if…(Imagine if the EDSA Revolution did not happen in 1986. What do you think
our country will be like at present?)
• Suppose that…(Suppose that you are to design a computer game to help children learn
about love and sacrifice. Describe the game you will create.)
• Predict (Predict changes that will happen if humans had a third eye at the back of their
heads)
How to teach PRACTICALITY?
Have in mind real life situations where students can use what they learn to meet their own and
also others’ practical needs.
• Apply (Apply addition concept in determining number of boys and girls in the classroom)
• Use (Use the knowledge of Excel to keep track daily household expenses)
• Put in practice (Put into practice what you learn about classroom rules in making your own
classroom rules poster)
• Implement (Implement a lesson plan that one has made)
• Employ (Employ the formula of computing the area of one’s living room to determine the number
of 12”x12” tiles needed to cover the floor)
• Render practical what they know (render practical a proposed assembly design for a
computer PC)
How to teach for WISDOM?
One of the goals is for learners to learn to see and understand the point of view of others. It is important for your learners to balance
one’s own needs with needs of other people and also that of the world or the environment. It is developing your learners to consistently
act based on positive ethical values.
• Try to find a common good (What might be a solution for the common good in the Philippines and China claim on Spratly
islands)
• See things from others’ point of view (Think of a person you had in conflict or fight with. Put yourself in the person’s place.
Write down her point of view and concerns as detailed as possible. What can you do or say to express that you understand the
person now?)
• Balance your own interests with those of others and of institutions (Should parents expect their children to take care of
them when they are old? Why?)
• Look at the long term as well as the short term (How is global warming going to affect the world, and the Philippines in
particular? What can you do?)
• Reflect about how one can base his every decision on positive ethical values (Is it ever ethical to shoot down a plane
with civilians and terrorists on board if the terrorists plan to slam the plane to a building with thousands of people?)
• Appreciate that in life what is seen as true and effective may vary over time and place (How does parenting
change over time? What would you say are different now than before?)

Learning Activities following the WICS
Model
1. Choose a lesson/topic you will cover for the third quarter.
2. Based on the WICS model, describe the tasks or activities you will give to your students.
3. You will be provided with a template which you will fill out.
4. Final work for submission will be saved in pdf form.
At the end of the day, the true
powerhouse of a 21st century classroom
lies with the teacher. The power she
wields comes not from the knowledge she
stands and recites, but from the
opportunities she designs for students
to learn, and some of the most impactful
opportunities will be ones intertwined
and integrated with the best technology.
