Unit 5 Virtual Work Tutorial 1

1. The document provides examples of using the virtual work method to calculate support reactions for beams under different loading conditions. 2. It analyzes 6 beam structures with various point loads and moments and calculates the support reactions at each end by equating the virtual work done by internal and external forces to zero. 3. The key steps involve giving virtual displacements to different supports, calculating corresponding displacements at loading points, and setting up the virtual work equation to solve for the desired support reaction.

1.Find the resultant of the force system shown in figure 1 by virtual work method.

O dx

Figure 1

Assume dx and dy to be positive virtual displacements of O

Let E be the equilibrient:
Algebraic sum of work done by horizontal components must be zero
E cos  dx + 40 cos 60 dx – 20sin30 dx – 50 sin45 dx = 0
(E cos  + 40 cos 60 – 20sin30 – 50 sin45 ) dx = 0
As dx ≠0

-E cos  = 40 cos 60 – 20sin 30 – 50 sin 45 = -25.35 N ----(1)

Algebraic sum of work done by vertical components must be zero

Esin dy + 40 sin 60 dy + 50 cos 45 dy + 20 cos 30 dy = 0

( Esin + 40 sin 60 + 50 cos 45 + 20 cos 30)dy = 0
As dy ≠0

-Esin = 40 sin60 + 50cos45 + 20 cos 30 = 87.31 N-----(1)

Let RA and RD be the recations at supports A and D respectively.

To find RD, release the support D only and give a virtual displacement of dy upwards ( +ve). This means

Finding virtual displacement at B (dl B) and at C (dl C) by comparing similar triangles;

dyB = 5/7 dy = 0.714dy

dyc = 2/7 dy = 0.285dy

Applying principle of virtual work;
RA x dy + RD x 0 – 40 x 0.714dy -20 x 0.285 dy = 0
(RA – 40 x 0.714 -20 x 0.285) dy = 0

The displacement at the point of equivalent concentrated load can be computed by comparing |||ler

(RB – 20 )dy = 0, dy can not be zero.
