Commercial art applies artistic principles to a

variety of fields. Commercial artists design

Work on Art

Activity I Computer Art: ASCII Art

Materials: Computer, cellphone or tablet

ASCII art is a graphic design technique that uses computers for presentation and consists of
pictures pieced together different letters and symbols from the computer and cellphones. The term is also
loosely used to refer to text-based visual art in general.

Old typewriters can also be used to create these works of art.

Examples of ASCII art

Procedure:

1. Using only letters and symbols found on your computer software (MS Word, MS Excel, Ms
Powerpoint, etc), cellphone or tablet, create any image of your choice.

2. If you are using a computer software, play with different sizes or font presentation (bold or italics) to
create varying images of the same design.

If you are using your cellphone, fill-up the screen with letters or symbols and leave-out spaces to
create your image like the Albert Einstein image above.

If you are having a hard time looking for an inspiration, why not create an ASCII art of your name?
What is important is you can create an art using the technology that you have in your hand.

Craft Creativeness

If having a computer, cellphone or tablet, may serve as a challenge, you may get the simple
concept of computer art through pixel art.

A pixel is the basic unit of a computer graphics. It is made up of only one shape, a square, and one
specific color. Combining all pixels can create powerful images of art and even film.

Materials: graphing papers, pencils, crayons or any coloring materials.

Procedures:

1. Draw your design lightly on the graphing paper.

2. Fill in the boxes with the color of your choice to create the image of your design.

3. To make it an authentic pixel art follow the:

The Simple Rules of Creating a Pixel Art by Hand

1. One box, one color.

2. There are no half colored boxes.

3. Curves are interpreted like stairs. Look at batman logo.

4. To achieve shadow or color transition, use one color lighter or darker.

If there are no available pieces of graphing paper. You may create the boxes using a ruler
and a pencil.

Set the box size to a comfortable measurement unit: 10 mm or 1 cm and then follow the
given instructions above.

draw an image of your choice. However, instead of straight lines, you are only limited to the entire
Alphabet, Numbers and only these following symbols ( ) , + : - > < ? / = @ # * ^ { } [ ] \

Materials: Bond paper, colored pens or pencils or ballpens

1. Create any image of your choice using only the prescribed characters above.

2. Use different colors to make your work very colorful.

Broaden Your Understanding

Have you ever heard of the word Design?

Design is the conceptualization and creation of new things like books, posters, products, places,
signs, systems, services, furniture, websites, and more. It is like very much like art but it is art with a
purpose in mind. This purpose is often associated with commercial value of a concept or a creation since
these things are often made to be sold and use. Thus, it must be well-thought off, well-made and attractive
that its users will notice it and buy it. Commercial art follows the concept of design.

Have you noted the similarities and the distinct difference of Art and Design?

The creation of an art work needs to be well-thought of, well-made and attractive so that other
people will appreciate it and buy it. It is like design as defined above but the difference is the product will be
used after it is bought while an art work remains only to be appreciated and not used. Another similarity
worth knowing is that since design is like art, it also follows the same elements and principles. We already
learned that by properly using these elements and principles of art, we can create works of art that will that
have better aesthetics or beauty in them. Again, the only added value in design compared to art is its
purpose and use.
