Method Statement for Demolition of Building Structures

Demolition requires a careful and safe method in order to make sure that personnel involved and other
related parties are protected from any hazards. Demolition may affect the public, workers and adjacent
structures. Therefore a well-defined procedure is necessary that will be strictly followed during the demolition
work.

The following method statement describes the procedure, equipment and materials required for the
demolition of existing building / structures / services. The equipment and material that may be involved in
demolition works are as follows but not limited to

 demolition hammer
 sledgehammer
 excavator
 truck/hauler
 concrete cutter
 grinder
 drill
 hand tools

Survey before commencement: Before starting the demolition work, all available drawings and documents
will be studied and carried out a thorough survey and examination of the building, structure or services to
be demolished.

Any building, structure or services to be retained at site and any adjoining property or services liable to be
affected by demolition shall be examined before demolition and any existing cracks or other evidence of
damage shall be noted.

Disconnection of services:
Before starting demolition, the contractor shall arrange with the client and authorities, if applicable for the
locating and marking of the position of all known services affected by the work and for the proper
disconnection of their mains supplies and cables.

If during demolition, live services are encountered which had not been previously identified, the work shall
be stopped immediately in the vicinity and all reasonable steps shall be taken.

Local Authorities Approval:


All the requirements of Local and Statutory Authorities regarding notification of demolition works shall be
complied.
Method Statement for Building Demolition

 Temporary fence will be constructed and area around the structure to be demolished will be
barricaded properly. Precautionary signs/warning notices will be erected and maintained to control
access in the area during demolishing process. Demolition works will be carried out by using jack
hammer and other associated machinery/equipment.
 Old buildings, structures and superficial obstructions shall be demolished, broken up and disposed of
by a sequence of stages.
 Broken materials resulting in demolition to be cleared and removed by using bucket mounted on
excavator or by hand before carrying out the next step of demolition. Construction manager shall
ensure that activities has been planned as per all methods and procedures.
 Edges of the area under demolition will be marked by the surveyor and cut by using grinder.
Construction manager and site engineers shall be responsible for supervision and control of the work
in the assessment of the risk involved and in the method demolition to be used.
 If it has been identified that there are sewer and water main line in the adjacent area, due care shall
be provided to the water and sewer lines.
 Remove debris and surplus material regularly to keep the site clean and tidy.

Disposal of Demolished Material / Site Clearance:


All the surplus materials and waste products arising from the demolition and site clearance shall be disposed
of in accordance with relevant requirements.
