famous book “Liber abaci”
Fibonacci Sequence History
 Medieval mathematician and businessman
Fibonacci (Leonardo Pisano) posed the following
problem:
 A young pair of rabbits (one of each sex) is
placed on an island. A pair of rabbits does not
breed until they are 2 months old. After they
are 2 months old, each pair of rabbits produces
another pair each month. Find a recurrence
relation for the number of pairs of rabbits on
the island after n months, assuming that no
rabbits ever die.
 This is an example of a recursive sequence,
obeying the simple rule that to calculate the
next term one simply sums the preceding
two:
a1 = 1
a2 = 1
an = an-1 + an-2
 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, ...
 The Fibonacci numbers occur in the sums
of "shallow" diagonals in Pascal's triangle
 Example: Fibonacci sequence application
 The most common such problem is that
of counting the number of compositions
of 1s or 2s that sum to a given total n:
there are Fn+1 ways to do this.
 Determine the number of compositions
of 1s and 2s that sum up to 5.
 Ans. F6 = 8 compositions
 Example: Fibonacci sequence application
 The Fibonacci numbers can be found among
the set of binary strings
 The number of binary strings of length n
without consecutive 1s is the Fibonacci number
Fn+2.
 Given binary strings of length 4, determine
the number of binary strings without
consecutive 1s.
 Ans. 8 (they are 0000, 0001, 0010, 0100, 0101,
1000, 1001 and 1010)
