Lesson 5 Communicative Styles
What’s In
To be effective communicators, we should be cognizant not only on what
message we want to convey but also the way we should say it. This is the
reason we need to be aware of the various communicative styles and of when
to use such communicative styles appropriately.
Martin George Joos (1976) classifies five types of communicative styles,
namely: formal, consultative, casual, intimate, and frozen.
1. Formal – This style is observed in formal engagements such as keynote
speech, privilege speech, the president’s state of the nation address,
research defense, judge’s pronouncement, and scientific reports. It is
marked by an impersonal, objective, and precise use of language
(Nordquist, 2019). Communication is one-way; hence, the audience or
listeners do not participate in the process.
5. Frozen – This is the most formal of all the communicative styles. Also
called fixed speech, frozen communicative style is common as part of the
ceremonial rites such as prayers, creed, anthems, patriotic oaths, pledge
of allegiance, wedding officiate speech, and affirmation.
