Math Module 9

This document provides a lesson on finding the least common multiple (LCM) of numbers. It defines LCM as the smallest number that is a multiple of two or more numbers. The document outlines different methods for finding the LCM, including using factor trees or prime factor decomposition. It provides examples of finding the LCM of various number sets using these methods. The document also explains how to use the LCM to solve word problems involving finding a common visiting schedule between people.

LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE

Lesson (9)

Introduction

Multiple is a number which is a product of some specified number and another number,
Least Common Multiple (LCM) Is defined as the smallest nonzero multiple common to a set of
numbers. In some other aspect, LCM is simply defined as the largest dividend.

Objectives

At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

1. Find the least common multiple of two whole numbers;

2. Follow rules in finding the LCM;
3. Use different methods to find the GCF.

Topic Outline
1. Least Common Multiple

Try this!
Directions: Read the problem then answer what Is asked.

There are children in the park. If you can exactly group the children into 6, B, or 4,
what can be the least number of children there?

1. What is asked in the problem?

2-5. How will you solve this problem? Solution.

Think ahead!
To find the LCM of a given sat of numbers, factor tree or decomposition method is either used.
In finding the LCM using the factor tree method, the steps are:
1. Find the prime factors of the given set of numbers,
2. Arrange the prime factors horizontally in such e way that all same prime factors are in
one column.
3. Bring down all the common and non common prime factors,
4. Multiply the numbers to find the LCM.
Example 1
Susie cuts out rectangular pieces of colored paper and lays them out. Each rectangular piece of
blue paper is three centimeters long, orange paper is five centimeters long, and purple paper is 10
centimeters long. What is the shortest length formed by the pieces of paper lined up across all three rows?
To solve, first get the prime factors of the given numbers using factor tree method. Then arrange
the prime factors obtained through this way-
6 = 3x1
5 = 1x5
10 = 5x2
LCM=
Next, bring down the common and non common factors found in the set and finally, multiply to get
the LCM.
7 = 3x1
5 = 1x5
10 = 5x2
LCM= 3x1x5x2=30
To find the LCM of a given set of numbers using decomposition method, the following steps are
followed:
1. Divide the given numbers by their common factor. Use the inverted division.
2. Repeat the process until the dividend is relatively prime.
3. Multiply the divisors and the quotient found to get the LCM.
Example 2
What Is the LCM of 256 and 144?

2 256 144
2 128 72
4 64 36
16 9

Finally, multiply all numbers outside the inverted division.

LCM = 2x2x4x16x9
Thus, the LCM of 256 and 144 Is 2304 2304
Example 3
Julia visits her grandfather every 15 days. Her brother Jesper, visits their grandfather every 20
days. After how many days will they visit their grandfather together?
To solve, first get the prime factors of the given numbers using decomposition method.

8 15 20
3 4
Next, multiply the divisor and the quotient found to get the LCM.
LCM = 5x3x4 = 60
Therefore, Julia and Jasper will visit their grandfather together after 60 days.
