DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH

Grade 7 – Special Program for Arts
(One Lesson Plan from Self-Learning Module)
GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS:
The learner demonstrates communicative competence through his/her understanding of
Philippine Literature and other text types for a deeper appreciation of Philippine
Culture.

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY:

EN7G-II-a-1: Use phrases, clauses, sentences and appropriately and meaningfully
I. OBJECTIVES
After working on the activities in the module, students will be able to:
a) define phrase, clause and sentence;
b) differentiate phrase, clause and sentence from one another;
c) appreciate the importance of phrase, clause and sentences through activity;
and

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Using Phrases, Clauses, and Sentences Appropriately and Meaningfully

Time Frame: 45 minutes

III. LESSON PROPER

A. Preliminary Activities
 Classroom Management/Health Protocols
 Prayer
 Greeting
 Checking of Attendance
 Review of the Previous Lesson

B. Activity
The teacher will be showing some pictures on the screen. The students will
describe the pictures in a sentence type of statement. See Appendix A.

C. Analysis
After the activity, students will be asked the following questions:
 How were you able to describe the pictures shown earlier?
 Do you think expressing the complete idea through a sentence is important in
understanding and describing the picture? Why?
D. Abstraction
Sentence – refers to a group of words that begins with a capital letter and ends
with any of these three punctation marks: the period or full stop, the exclamation
mark and the question mark.

A simple sentence is one which has one main or independent clause.

EXAMPLE:
a. This is my food.

This now an example of sentence because it has a subject “This” and has a predicate of “is
my food”.
b. Where is your friend?
(This one ends with a question mark unlike the first example which uses a period on the end
part of the sentence.)
c. That’s a nice shot! (This example ends with a question mark.)

Two Parts of a Sentence: the Subject and the Predicate

Subject – refers to the part of the sentence that tells who or what the sentence is
about.
EXAMPLE:
1. Kelly is walking down the street. 2. She looks good.

subject predicate subject predicate

*The teacher will be giving Activity Sheets to the learners and let them answer the first task.
TASK 1
Directions: Copy each of the following sentences on your activity notebook. Underline the
subject and encircle the predicate. See Appendix B
1. Ana is cooking spaghetti.
2. The children are playing scrabble.
3. Avocado is my favorite fruit.
4. Reading is my hobby.
5. My teacher smiles at me.

Phrase – words that can be grouped together, but without a subject or a verb. A
phrase is a group of words related to the subject, predicate, or object. It does not
contain a subject and a predicate.

A simple sentence is one which has one main or independent clause.

EXAMPLE:
a. After working late into the night, Jack fell asleep on his desk.
b. I left my keys at the library, my favorite spot in the school. appositive phrase

Take note that a phrase can come at the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence.

Clause – are group of words that have both subjects and predicates.
Two Types of Clause:
1. Independent Clause – a clause that can stand alone. Unlike phrases, a clause can
sometimes act as a sentence.
2. Dependent or Subordinate Clause – a type of clause that can’t stand alone or
doesn’t have a complete thought.

EXAMPLE:
a. When the man broke into the house, the dog barked at him.

subordinate clause independent clause

When we remove the first part of the sentence which is “When the man broke into the
house”, it doesn’t have a complete thought which made it a hanging statement and doesn’t
make sense at all. Whereas the second part of the sentence remains to have a complete idea.
For the subordinate clause to have a perfect idea, it needs to be combined with the
independent clause.

E. Application
The class will be divided into 4 groups. Each group will be given a chalk and an illustration
board for the activity. The groups will select a leader to organize their members and secretary
to list the members. The teacher will flash some sentences on the screen and the students will
analyze the group of words whether it is a sentence, phrase or a clause. The teacher will count
three (5) seconds to write their answers on the illustration boards and another three (3)
seconds for the revealing of group answers. See Appendix C

it is not. (For items 1-5 only.) See Appendix D
