To finish this session, you need to focus. The ideas of the philosophers maybe different from
yours but they have a point. So, listen and understand their ideas.
A. LESSON PREVIEW/REVIEW
Even amidst this global pandemic, life has to go on, isn’t it? But of course! How are you?
Last meeting we talked about Marcel’s philosophy particularly on the life of an embodied-spirit.
To review, I would like you to answer the question below in not more than 5 sentences..
You really understood our lesson last meeting. For today, we will talk about freedom,
particularly the insight of Jean-Paul Sartre and Immanuel Kant. To know what you know already
know about the topic, answer the “What I Know” chart.
B.MAIN LESSON
On Freedom
First, it is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or
restraint as when we say that we have the freedom to speak.
Second, it is the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved as when one say, “Finally,
after three years of my imprisonment, I had tasted freedom again.”
Thirdly, it is the unrestricted use of something as when we say, “We had more or less
complete freedom of using our laptop whenever and wherever we wanted.”

Students’ Activity Sheets #11
Moreover, Sartre said that man is condemned to freedom which implies that man
cannot escape freedom. Man is forever free. He has to make a choice all the time. He cannot
even choose not to choose for not choosing is choosing just the same.
However, this freedom of man should not be seen as something which is chaotic and
anarchic. Freedom for Sartre is a freedom of synthesis which entails that when man makes
a choice, he is not only making a choice for himself but for all mankind.
Are you done reading? Alright! Now answer the questions that follow.
Great! Now, let us check what you learned. Answer the “What I Know” chart.
