Quiz 3 Hydro Ce141-2

Runoff coefficient accounts for losses from total rainfall. Watersheds and catchments are synonymous and describe an area that drains to a common point. Baseflow comes from groundwater while direct runoff is surface water flow. The phi-index represents constant abstractions from rainfall to produce excess rainfall. Direct runoff can be calculated from infiltration rates and rainfall amounts based on the Green-Ampt equation.

Runoff coefficient could be used to account for the losses or abstraction from total rainfall.

The distribution of the hydrologic processes could be grouped based on locational or spatial presence.

Watershed and catchment are synonymous.

Baseflow is produced by groundwater flow.

IF there is 5cm/hr of rainfall at an area and the infiltration rate is 10cm/hr, according to Horton, the
overland flow will be zero.

Direct runoff minus baseflow is equal to total observed streamflow.

Groundwater elevation when there is a storm in constant or does not change elevation.

If flood water is stored during the duration of the flooding event and gradually released floodwaters
recedes, we call it a retention basin.

In a hydrograph, the spikes which represent the storm hydrograph, results to direct runoff.

If the total volume of the direct runoff hydrograph is divided to the total area of the watershed, we will
get the direct runoff depth.

The phi-index is that constant rate of abstractions that result to the excess rainfall hyetograph when
subtracted.
The flow of water on the land surface is specifically called direct runoff.

If the Green-Ampt equation yields 2cm/hr and the rainfall is recorded to be 5cm/hr, the direct runoff is
3cm/hr at the time interval.
