III.Project Study Proposal

Abstract

A full-sized stationary drill press is heavy, relatively expensive, and takes up valuable

floor space in your work area. Reducing the size will result in portability, saving space in the

work area and increased production. The Portable Drill Press Machine was designed and fab-

ricated so to display the intended goal of improved functionality, efficiency and effectiveness.

The first part of the simulation and evaluation tested the Functionality, Efficiency and Effec-

tiveness of the Machine. Evaluators were comprised of engineers, machine designers, techni-

cian, fabricators and operators. The simulation will run 20 samples. Each sample will have

varying drill bit size from 3.5 to 6.5 mm and materials from plastic, aluminum to stainless

steel. The machine worked accurately, simplified the process, operated smoothly during the

tests, and been easily manageable to users. It also worked appropriately according to function

and features. Stopper, measuring device and speed control is recommended for better safety

practice.

1. Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Reducing objects and materials, especially in machine parts and components, has

become a demand today. Engineers and innovators found out that smaller machines will

further reduce the effort and time of work done when used. This is why in manufacturing

and in stores today, you’ll see products that are portable. A few examples of big

contributions are generators in power distribution at home and work and portable welding

machines in construction.

Converting a massive machine into its portable version means convenience. One

particular factor is the weight. Having a machine reduced in size will make the use of its

mobile and handy. One no longer needs a lift and an extra hand to carry such a machine

from place to place. The second is accessibility. Who needs to run to a machine shop or

fabrication house when you have a tool on hand? It can easily be accessed. That enters

the third factor, which is the storage space. Having a smaller machine or device certainly

saves storage space.

Although the need for bigger machines is there, ones that are portable as its

valuable purpose thus the reason why we innovate portable products; (1) mobility,

convenience, easy to access, storage space, time and urgency, (2) Construction,

fabrication, machine shop, and (3) generators, welding machines.

1.6 Definition of Terms

To clearly understand the study, below are the technical terms with an operational

definition:

AC Motor is a type of electric machine that converts electrical energy into

mechanical energy. AC motors take electrical power through alternating cur-

rent, and convert this energy into mechanical rotation.

Bearing is a machine element that constrains relative motion to only the de-

sired motion, and reduces friction between moving parts.

Drill bit is a tool used to cut or crush rock. With rotary drilling, a hole is

drilled by the continuous turning of a drill bit. The drill bit is the mechanism

that cuts into the ground layers to reach the gas deposit or to cut a core sam-

ple.

2. Review of Literature and Related Studies

Drill Press Origin

Two men in Melbourne, Australia were the first to patent the electric drill, in

1889. Arthur James Arnot and William Blanch Brain. Human powered drills had been

around for hundreds of years beforehand – and were referred to as “drilling machines”.

The breakthrough these two men made was seismic, however, and opened up a wealth of

new possibilities to machine precision parts in metal and wood.

Into the 1930s drills improved greatly, mostly in terms of precision. By 1917,

Black and Decker had patented a hand-held electric drill with a trigger, much like those in

use today. For drill presses though, it was all about accuracy. Heavyweights such as

Delta, JD Wallace and others were all entering the industry and starting to product very

high-quality shop drill presses.

Advancements in modern motor design and electronics have introduced the ability

to control the drill using a knob electronically, rather than altering the gear ratio of the

drill using a system of belts. Besides allowing more seamless speed changes, this

technology is impressive because the torque and power of the drill can be preserved

without changing the gear ratio.

The next major advancement is in the field of laser alignment. With older drills,

you needed a special drill bit called a center finder in order to accurately align the drill

over the desired hole location. This was a frustrating and time-consuming process, and

one fraught with potential problems.

With the advent of laser beams however, modern drills shine a laser down onto

the work piece to indicate where the drill will position the hole. This allows the operator

to easily move the workpiece to the correct position before clamping it down and drilling

it [1].

Portable Drilling Machine

A portable drilling machine is a perfect choice for applications that require good

maneuverability due to limited space. These machines are convenient, compact, small,

and usually lightweight. The greatest advantage of these types is the fact that you can use

them from any position and even very small diameters. You can use them with different

sizes of drills, up to 12 mm and there will be no need for a drill press table [2].

A drill press could be used for a variety of job like wood and metal working. The

drill press could also be used for sanding of wood and even metal by using the

appropriate accessory. The important thing to understand is that the drill press would

always work in a circular motion and depending on the power of the motor you could

select for what type of job you would be employing it.

Drill press can do drilling, reaming, tapping, counter-Boring, countersinking, and

spot-facing [3].

Drilling

According to research, approximately 36% of all machine hours (40% of CNC)

are spent performing hole-making operations, the use of high-performance drilling

systems can significantly reduce hole-making costs and increase the efficiency of the

drilling operations. This chapter first presents the basics of a system approach to the

design of high-efficient drilling operations, arguing for the coherence of the components

of drilling systems. It then reveals the principal steps in the design of drilling systems.

The main emphasis is placed on the design/selection of the proper tool for the application

[4].

Reaming

Reaming is a process which slightly enlarges a pre-existing hole to a tightly

toleranced diameter. A reamer is similar to a mill bit in that it has several cutting edges

arranged around a central shaft, as shown below. Because of the delicate nature of the

operation and since little material is removed, reaming can be done by hand. Reaming is

most accurate for axially symmetric parts produced and reamed on a lathe [5].

Tapping

Tapping is the process of cutting a thread inside a hole so that a cap screw or bolt

can be threaded into the hole. Also, it is used to make thread on nuts.

Tapping can be done on the lathe by power feed or by hand. Regardless of the method,

the hole must be drilled with the proper size tap drill and chamfered at the end [6].

Counter-boring

Counterboring is the process of using a counterbore to enlarge the upper end of a

hole to a predetermined depth and machine a square shoulder at that depth [7].

Counter Boring operation basically enlarges a pre-drilled bore. Usually counter boring is

used when machine power does not allow solid drilling of that size. It covers a large

range of diameters up to 500mm. The number of cutting edges on the tool can vary

depending upon the amount of stock removal. As the counter bore tool enters the

component, the pads are supported by the finished bore diameter. The Coolant and chips

flow is similar to BTA drilling operation or chip forward [8].

Countersinking

Counter sinking: Counter sinking is the operation of making a cone shaped

enlargement at the end of a hole to provide recess for a flat head screw or a countersunk

rivet. The counter-sunks (tools used for counter sinking) carry included angles of 60°, 82°

or 90° and the cutting edges of the tool are formed at the conical surface [9].

Spot-facing

Spot-facing provides a seat or flat surface at the entrance and surrounding area of

a hole. This flat surface allows the bottom of a cap screw or bolt to seat squarely with the

material even if the clearance hole is not normal to the surrounding material. Spot-facing

is commonly done on castings where irregular surfaces are found. Spot-facing may be

performed on a drill press with a counterbore of suitable size for the operation. A

proper size pilot must be used whenever this is done on the drill press. Spot-facing, when

machined on a mill, a center cutting end mill may be the tool of choice. Spot-facing on

the lathe is commonly done with a facing tool or form tool [10].

Spot-facing is the operation of smoothing and squaring the surface around and at

the end of a hole so as to provide a smooth seat for a nut or for the head of a cap screw.

Spot-facing is generally done on castings and forgings [11].

Drill Press Machine Main Parts

Head

The head part of the drill press houses the spindle as it is attached at the top

region of the spindle. It is responsible for the spindle movement because the spindle can

only move upward or downward.

Spindle

Spindle is the most important part of the drill press that is used to hold the tool

and is responsible for its rotation. The spindle of the tool is held with the help of arm that

is gripped with the column. In order to keep the spindle in its place, the manufacturer has

used a spindle return spring and the spindle moves up and down easily. The weight of the

spindle is very useful in the performance of the drill press as counter balances the spindle

spring. At the bottom side of the spindle, chuck is placed and this chuck is used to hold

the drill bit in place.

Column

The column of the drill machine is used to tie the table. The work is hold in place

by the table during the drilling process. It is a long rod in shape that stands vertical with

the table. Both the column and the tables are placed at the 90 degree with each other.

Table

Table is also one of the best parts of the drill press. This is used to hold the

working material in place. It is adjusted right at 90 degree to the column. It can be moved

upward, downward and rotated around the column as required. The shape of the table

does not matter. You can make a round shape or a rectangular shape table for your drill

press.

The base of the drill press is made up of the steel or iron. The main function of the

base of the drill press is used to support the column and stabilize it. With the help of the

base or the foot, the drill press can be placed in the upward direction.

Power transmission

The part of the drill press that is used to transmit the power for its working is

known as the power transmission. This power is supplied from the electric motor. The

process of transmission takes place with the help of the v-bolt and the pair of pulley

stacks opposite to each other. The speed of the spindle is fixed or controlled with the help

of the pulley stacks. The given figure shows the parts of the drill press [12].

The heart of the drill Press, the motors in a typical drill press, may range from

1/6th of horsepower to 2 HP or more based on the model. It’s electrical, and almost

always has variable speeds, which can be adjusted to your needs [13].

Electric Motor

In the kind of small, battery-powered motors we use around the home, a better

solution is to add a component called a commutator to the ends of the coil. In its simplest

form, the commutator is a metal ring divided into two separate halves and its job is to

reverse the electric current in the coil each time the coil rotates through half a turn. One

end of the coil is attached to each half of the commutator. The electric current from the

battery connects to the motor's electric terminals. These feed electric power into the

commutator through a pair of loose connectors called brushes, made either from pieces

of graphite (soft carbon similar to pencil "lead") or thin lengths of springy metal, which

(as the name suggests) "brush" against the commutator. With the commutator in place,

when electricity flows through the circuit, the coil will rotate continually in the same

direction [14].

Portable Drill Press

The portable drill press of this invention is universal in its application by its being

supported on a versatile standard. Through pivoting, sliding and rotating of the

components of the standard it is possible to position the drill in almost any desired

position for a drilling operation. Moreover, it is possible to obtain the desired drill

pressure for the drilling operation. The standard provides a most desirable guide for

maintaining drill alignment with the work product.

The standard of this invention for the portable drill is simple in its construction

involving a minimum number of parts which include a clamp for securing the standard to

a stationary base support, a fulcrum member is connected to the clamp and a lever arm is

connected to the fulcrum member and to an attachment means which is connected to the

and means of attaching an electrical hand drill to the support post such that the hand drill

can be urged in the direction of a work piece by a suitable mechanism.

A disadvantage of prior art portable drill press mechanisms is that they are usually

special purpose devices designed to do one or two specialized jobs. For example, the drill

press mechanism of Ennemoser has a base plate clamping mechanism which allows it to

be used solely for the purpose of drilling out vehicle wheel studs. While other portable

drill press mechanisms are slightly more flexible in use, they are all limited by the type of

base clamp they use.

A further disadvantage with prior art portable drill press mechanisms is that they

are designed to move an electric hand drill in a direction parallel to their support post.

Again, this limits their usefulness, since it is often necessary to drill angled holes into a

work piece [16].

Portable Drill Press Device

In construction and fabrication work it is often necessary to drill holes in locations

that do not admit of the use of a conventional drill press while at the same time these

holes might be of such a nature as to require considerable effort to accomplish the drilling

thereof.

With this in mind it is a particular object of the present invention to provide a

device adapted for being associated with a hand drill which will convert the hand drill to

a drill press arrangement whereby power drilling operations can be carried out.

one of the DC power-sources and the AC power input for providing power to the motor.

The present invention generally relates to power tools and, more specifically, to

magnetic-base drill presses.

Magnetic-base drill presses perform drilling operations by attaching a base

portion of the drill press magnetically to a ferromagnetic workpiece. The magnetic base

of a magnetic drill press is switchable and operable between magnetized and

demagnetized positions using electromagnets or permanent magnets. AC powered

magnetic drill presses may be run non-stop, so long as they receive a constant source of

AC electric power. However, AC powered magnetic drill presses lack utility under

circumstances where AC power is unavailable.

the AC power input for providing power to the motor [18].

Portable Self-Drilling Device

Power drills are very old and usually are in the form of a drill press or electric

hand drill. In the case of the drill press, the operator must apply continuous manual

pressure on the hand lever to force the drill bit point through the object being drilled.

When the hand drill is used, the entire unit is manually forced in a direction toward the

hole being bored. Obviously, with either tool the pressure would vary between operators,

and furthermore, the pressure would not be uniform or consistent throughout any one

drilling operation. Such uneven and uncontrolled pressure on the bit may well bur-n its

point and in any event, shorten its useful life. Furthermore, considerable labor and

attention must be given to the drilling phase. A still further objection to the present

drilling equipment is that the object to be drilled must be manually held and stabilized

during the drilling and this is often difficult and dangerous especially in the matter of

small objects [19].

Feed System for a Drill Press

The drill press comprises a base for supporting the drill press on a surface, a

housing supported on the base and defining an opening, a telescoping spindle assembly

positioned for movement relative to the housing along an axis and for rotation about the

axis, a motor operable to rotatably drive the spindle assembly, a drive system connected

between the motor and the spindle assembly, and a feed system for moving the spindle

assembly between a lowered position and a raised position. The feed system is supported

by the housing so that a portion of the feed system is exposed through the opening. The

drill press also comprises a flexible barrier member to cover the exposed portion of the

feed system. The feed system includes a sprocket rotatably supported by the housing and

a flexible member movably engaging the sprocket and connected to the spindle assembly

such that rotation of the sprocket moves the spindle assembly between the lowered

position and the raised position.

The present invention generally relates to drill presses and, more particularly to a

feed system for a drill press.

A conventional drill press generally includes a housing that is supported by a

base, and a motor assembly that drives a rotating spindle. The spindle supports a drill bit.

Generally, the motor assembly and the spindle are supported on the housing by a feed

system, such as a rack and pinion assembly, so that the motor assembly and the spindle

are movable relative to the housing. In this manner, the drill bit is movable into and out of

engagement with a workpiece.

The rack and pinion assembly for a drill press described above has several

problems. For example, in order to accommodate displacement of the rack relative to the

pinion, increased overhead space is required for the drill press to be operated. Further, in

a typical drill press, the motor assembly is movable with the drill bit and spindle, also

increasing the required overhead space. However, the rack and pinion assembly would

interfere with a motor assembly positioned on the stationary housing making such a

stationary motor assembly unfeasible. Additionally, in a portable drill press, with the drill

bit in the "up" or out-of-engagement position, the raised motor assembly and spindle

make the drill press unwieldy.

The present invention provides a feed system for a power tool, such as a drill

press, that attempts to alleviate the problems relating to existing feed systems for drill

presses. In one aspect, the invention provides a drill press that includes a flexible member

feed system to produce vertical travel of the drill bit within a limited space. To replace the

rack and pinion assembly, the belt feed system utilizes a flexible member which is

wrapped around a pair of sprockets.

Specifically, the present invention provides a drill press comprising a base for

supporting the drill press on a surface, a housing supported by the base, a spindle

positioned for movement relative to the housing along an axis and for rotation about the

axis, and a motor supported by the housing and operable to rotatably drive the spindle.

The spindle has an end adapted to support an output element, such as a drill bit. The

spindle is movable along the axis between a lowered position, in which the output

the work surface by a large suction cup which is attached to the lower surface of the stand

longitudinally moving the drill motor along the standard and may include a biasing spring

to counteract the weight of the motor, etc. The standard, along with the attached drill

motor, may be pivoted about its longitudinal axis within the mating collar to allow

drilling two holes at fixed distances apart through the work surface without repositioning

coolant inserted therein atop the work surface and around the hole cutting tool. A resilient

coolant retaining ring fixed to the lower surface of the base just outside the perimeter of

the tool access hole presses against the work surface as the stand is attached to the work

In the past, when it was desired to cut an opening in a sheet of plate vitreous

material such as glass or mirror, a carbide-tipped drill tool bit was used. Holes were

drilled through the glass in regularly spaced intervals along the perimeter of the desired

opening. A groove was then scored between each adjacent hole with a hand-held

diamond-tipped cutting tool. A perimeter was thus formed by the holes and grooves in the

glass encompassing the material to be removed. This unwanted section of glass was then

carefully broken out of the work sheet.

This very old method of making an opening in plate glass or mirrors was tedious

and time consuming. The resulting opening could be jagged and uneven unless it was cut

by an experienced glass cutter and/or ground smooth after breaking away the unwanted

section. With this method, the entire sheet of glass could crack or break while removing

the unwanted section of glass, destroying the value of costly material.

Another more recent method was to drill a first relatively large hole, then

reposition the entire drilling apparatus in relation to the work surface after which a

second adjacent hole of the same size is drilled. A hand glass cutting tool is then used to

score a pair of tangent lines between the two holes after which the glass remaining

between the holes is broken away.

There was also a problem in placing the sheet of glass to the drill press stand and

holding it in place while drilling without cracking the glass. Clamps tended to hold the

glass so tightly that they cracked the glass, or so loosely that the glass would shift,

causing inaccuracy in the placement of the drilled holes. In U.S. Pat. No. 2,151,205,

resilient suction cups were incorporated to attach the ceramic drill to the work surface,

providing secure attachment to the work surface, but had to be disengaged then

reattached to drill each additional hole.

A cooled, lubricated drill tool cuts through the glass faster, and leaves a neater

hole. In the past, the drill bit had to be cooled while drilling manually and applying

coolant against the drill bit at the work surface. Coolant had to be constantly added

because the drill bit tends to disperse the coolant as it rotates [21].

Portable Drill Press

I have devised an improved tool for hand use in drilling and pressing operations

which, being portable, is especially useful to mechanics, such as members of the

plumbers trade, and others who frequently find it necessary to perform work, such as

repairs of various kinds, at points distant from their work shop where access may be had

to heavy stationary power-driven machines.

My invention has for its object to provide a drilling press in which the parts are

compact, yet of a size to hold work pieces such as water faucet stems and the like,

comprising a frame having upper and lower spaced arms, the former carrying the tool

holder and its feed screw while the latter serves as the support or bed to which the work

piece is clamped.

In conjunction with a tool of the above described characteristics my invention also

comprehends a novel construction of the work piece bed and holder therefor, together

with an improved mounting for the parts by which the rotatable tool is adjustable and fed

with relation to the work piece.

Hand Drill and Drill Press

The invention contemplates a miniature drill which is handheld at a quill or sleeve

on the drill axis, in the manner of a pencil or pen. The tool includes mass eccentric to the

drill axis for absorbing reaction torque occasioned by drill operation. In one employment,

the fingers of the hand which holds the sleeve also steady the drill against the workpiece,

and in another employment a work-supporting jig fastened to the sleeve converts the tool

into a portable miniature drill press, assuring accurate tool alignment upon entering and

through a drill-feeding stroke into the work.

Portable drills incorporating their own electric motor or other drive are common

and valuable tools. In smaller sizes, they employ a pistol grip or other means of manual

grasp. However, when using such drills for the smaller drill-bit sizes, problems arise from

lack of balance, and from off-axis motor reaction torque, with the result that the drill-bit

may be broken or may skid over the work, as control over the desired drill-bit alignment

is momentarily lost. Such problems become more acute when the work to be drilled

presents a convex surface [23].

desired locations in a large workpiece positioned in a work area located beneath the

drilling unit.

In preferred practice the upright is connected to three spaced portions of an

existing structure. Vertical support is provided, at least in part, by an overhead bracket

from which the upright depends. The upright is laterally supported by a pair of braces,

each of which is connected near one end to the existing structure, and near its other end to

the upright member.

An important feature of the present invention lies in the provision of an overhead

mount which enables a power-operated drilling unit to be positioned above a work area

without the need for support members which intersect the horizontal plane of the work

area. By supporting the drilling unit entirely from above the work area, a throat-free drill

press is provided. Such the throat limitations of prior drill presses have been eliminated,

holes can be drilled at any desired location in a large workpiece, with the size of the

workpiece being limited only by the size of the available workspace [28].

Portable Drill Guide

In the conventional drill press, the drill unit carrying a rotating bit is movable

along a vertical axis toward a work supporting platform which usually defines a plane

perpendicular to the line of movement of the drill unit. Thus, it is fairly simple to drill a

perpendicular hole through a piece of material. It is simply placed on the work supporting

platform of the drill press while the drill unit carrying the rotating bit is advanced

downwardly into engagement with the material.

The portable unit may, of course, be easily and quickly manipulated. It may be

transported to portions of a large work piece which would be difficult or impossible to

position in a drill press. The main limitation associated with a portable drill is that it is

extremely difficult to drill a hole normal to the surface of a piece of material. This is a

particularly important aspect of use, inasmuch as drilled holes are frequently used to

receive dowels, bolts and other assembly means wherein it is necessary that the holes

through the adjacent pieces to be assembled be parallel and coextensive. There are, of

course, innumerable other applications where perpendicular holes are desirable. For this

reason, a suitable means has long been sought to improve the versatility of the portable

electric drill [29].

It is to be realized that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of the

invention, to include variations in size, materials, shape, form, function and manner of

operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the

art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the

specification are intended to be encompassed by the present invention [30].

Kinematic System of general-purpose drilling machine

Kinematic system in any machine tool is comprised of chain(s) of several

mechanisms to enable transform and transmit motion(s) from the power source(s) to the

cutting tool and the workpiece for the desired machining action. The kinematic structure

varies from machine tool to machine tool requiring different type and number of tool-work

motions. Even for the same type of machine tool, say column drilling machine, the designer

may take different kinematic structure depending upon productivity, process capability,

durability, compactness, overall cost etc. targeted.

Cutting motion

The cutting motion in drilling machines is attained by rotating the drill at different

speeds (r.p.m.). Like center lathes, milling machines etc, drilling machines also need to

have a reasonably large number of spindle speeds to cover the useful ranges of work

material, tool material, drill diameter, machining and machine tool conditions. The drill

gets its rotary motion from the motor through the speed gear box (SGB) and a pair of

bevel gears. For the same motor speed, the drill speed can be changed to any of the 12

speeds by shifting the cluster gears in the SGB. The direction of rotation of the drill can

be changed, if needed, by operating the clutch in the speed reversal mechanism.

Feed motion

In drilling machines, generally both the cutting motion and feed motion are imparted

to the drill. Like cutting velocity or speed, the feed (rate) also needs varying (within a range)

depending upon the tool-work materials and other conditions and requirements. The drill

receives its feed motion from the output shaft of the SGB through the feed gear box (FGA),

and the clutch. The feed rate can be changed to any of the 6 rates by shifting the gears in the

FGB. And the automatic feed direction can be reversed, when required, by operating the

speed reversal mechanism. The slow rotation of the pinion causes the axial motion of the drill

by moving the rack provided on the quil. The upper position of the spindle is reduced in

diameter and splined to allow its passing through the gear without hampering transmission of

its rotation.

Tool work mounting

The taper shank drills are fitted into the taper hole of the spindle either directly or

through taper socket(s). Small straight shank drills are fitted through a drill chuck having

taper shank. The workpiece is kept rigidly fixed on the bed (of the table). Small jobs are

3. Methods and Procedures

The following are presented briefly with different methods and procedures that

will be used in the development of the study. This includes the important components of

research design, machine design, concept of Kinematics and research environment.

3.1 Research Design

The research and development (R&D) process focused on the progress of the

prototype has been applied to this project for better execution of each vital step towards

completion and effective research study. The project's idea came from the data gathered

and information that will potentially result in the quality of the product.

Machines and its ability to diminish human error, improve production speed and

efficiency play a crucial role in the survival of a company. It is the presence of high-end

machines in assembly lines that enables the company to meet the requirements of the

customers in time.

A concept developing a Portable Drill Press is seen as the best solution when a

necessity to fabricate a machine part or component in faster and more convenient way

arises. One reason why technicians and machinist of a company see this as a potential

solution is the fact that being able to provide a machine component or have one repaired

faster will reduce downtime rate. Downtime happens when production stops for a

moment in the production line. It is commonly caused by machine failure. For example, a

need for a replacement of base plate which will be needing drill press will save the

company from the big trouble of downtime when it is done urgently.

3.2 Research Environment

The study of Portable Drill Press targeted Nidec Philippines Corporation at Binan

City Laguna. Data were recorded by testing the prototype of the design at the assembly

area of the company. The result served as a basis whether the study will bring positive de-

velopment in the production process of the company.

III.3Procedures

3.3.1 Data Gathering and Analysis

This chapter presents the data gathered by the researcher in order to design

and develop the Portable Drill Press. This part elaborates all the needed

information regarding the design requirements, method and as well as the

testing and evaluation that are significant to the fulfillment of the study.

A thorough observation and study was taken in order to come up a design

involving Portable Drill Press. The daily problems encountered in the production lines,

the difficulties reported by production engineers, technicians and operators, main

contributors of downtime during production and data based on the company’s monthly

production were taken into consideration. A discussion among R & D engineers and

machine designers in the company was conducted to justify and strengthen the claim of

the study.

Existing designs of Portable Drill Press and the different components used were

analyzed according to what was cited from books and researches published online. The

researcher made a comparison out of the results and discussion made by different related

studies.

3.3.2 Design

This design of Portable Drill Press will carry a 710-watts motor. The column sup-

port is an aluminum hollow shaft with its own dedicated base to hold the motor assembly

and main base in position.

The Motor Assembly will comprise a series of specifically designed fixtures to

hold the motor in place by screws. The linear guide will reduce the movement of the mo-

tor and chuck to vertically linear motion. A spring mechanism is applied to pull the chuck

and motor to its initial position after feeding.

The Main Base Assembly will be made of aluminum material. The switch will be

located at the left side of the main base for safe easy access.

3.3.4 Testing and Evaluation

The testing and evaluation of the Portable Drill Press will be divided into two

parts. The first part will test the Functionality, Efficiency and Effectiveness of the

Machine. This will be evaluated using questionnaires. The evaluators shall see a demo of

the machine before answering the questions. The 20 evaluators shall be comprised of

engineers, machine designers, technician, fabricators and operators.

The second part will test the quality of the machine based on its output. Two

criteria to be assigned will be “good” and “no good” to determine whether the machine

produced good results or not. The simulation will run 20 samples. Each sample will have

varying drill bit size from 3.5 to 6.5 mm and materials such as plastic, aluminum, and

stainless steel.

For testing and evaluation, the researcher will create a modified Likert scale to be

distributed with a professional who can check the prototype's accuracy. The

questionnaires will be prepared according to what prototype values it should possess and

aim to test the prototype's functionality and effectiveness after a demo of the prototype.

The type of questionnaire used is the rating scale which the respondents will rate from

highly satisfied (5) to strongly agree (1). There are three to five questions each of the

criteria. Each question has a column which the respondents can rate the prototype. The

ratings are based on the aspects that the prototype attained.

Statistical treatment will be used in analysis of the data that will be accumulated

from the respondents and evaluation sheets. Each criterion will be computed using the

weighted mean formula as follows:

The researcher will use the Likert Scale to measure the effectiveness, efficiency,

and cost-saving benefits of the proposed Portable Drill Press. This scale will also be used

to interpret the respondents’ response to the proposed design using five categories: highly

satisfied, satisfied, less satisfied, dissatisfied and highly dissatisfied.

If the chosen respondent will not be able to fulfill his duty in answering the pre-

pared questionnaire of the researchers, the researchers will get another respondent who is

involved in facility, to fill in the spot of the respondent who can’t answer the question-

assembly is possible. Using CAD for example SolidWorks and AutoCAD, the designer

could easily find weakness or potential mistakes in the design.

Fabrication. The researcher prepared first the parts and materials needed in

designing the proposed system. The availability of parts is then checked. In case the parts

are not available, the logistics will purchase the needed parts. In this study, linear guide

and AC motor were purchased outside. Common items such as bolts, switch, and

Aluminum materials (A5052) can be found in the storage area.

Assembly. This is the connection and attachment of parts, subassemblies, and

modules in a definite sequence to produce a finished machine. A module is a detachable

or nondetachable grouping of parts.

Simulation. This method helps the researcher to see fully functioning parts before

the production phase, via enhanced views and powerful simulation capabilities. These

features help to ensure the feasibility of your product’s design, catching errors before

they become costly mistakes in prototype and production.

Table 4.1 Functionality of Portable Drill Press Machine

Table 4.1 gives data about the functionality of the Portable Drill Press Machine. It

shows that out of 20 respondents, 18 were Highly Satisfied that the machine is easy to

use and manage, which is 90% if expressed in percentage. 15 respondents said that the

machine gained a High Satisfaction rate in terms of full operation during testing and

evaluation giving a 75% in percentage. While the machine is new to users, 14 of the

respondents agreed that the machine can be easily adapted and learned by the users were

Highly Satisfactory, a total of 70%.

Efficiency

Efficiency, when expressed in production, is defined as the number of outputs

over the total number of outputs. One can say that a machine is efficient when it delivers

higher number of outputs, thus giving a lower number of losses.

The researcher determined the efficiency of the machine by a number of running

samples. Samples with successful outputs were recorded, as well as samples with

unsuccessful result. Unsuccessful attempts were considered a loss.

considerations in project studies, 14 out of 20 respondents said they are Dissatisfied of

the materials’ affordability in price, and 15 out of 20 said they are Less Satisfied of the

Effectiveness

Effectiveness is the measure of how effective a certain thing is. Elaborately, it is

the capability of producing a desired result or the ability to produce desired output. When

a machine is deemed effective, it means it has an intended or expected outcome. In this

study we considered, capacity of machine, safety function, the quality of the output

produced and environmental pollution awareness as aspects that define effectiveness.

When innovators come up ideas for new technology, they follow a certain set of

standards, rules and policies that promote sustainability in design, one that does avoid

environment ruin. In this study, 19 out of 20 respondents (95%) agreed that the machine

does not contribute harmful material that may cause environmental pollution giving it a

rate of Highly Satisfied. With regard to the topic of production requirement, 18 out of 20

respondents (90%) agreed to give a rate of High Satisfactory for the reason that the

machine meets its maximum capacity. They were also Highly Satisfied of the machine’s

1.2 System Design

Design plays a crucial role in the measure and evaluation of Functionality

Efficiency and Effectiveness of the Portable Drill Press Machine. The researcher

considered material selection as one major consideration of the machine. See Table 4.4

for the machine Specifications and Material Selection.

The second consideration is convenience and economical features. In designing,

the operating features of the machine should be carefully studied. The starting,

The Portable Drill Press Machine designed and developed here has been shown to be

capable of drilling holes as intended in the work environment. It has demonstrated the

following components of potable drill press:

1. Portability: The Portable Drill Press Machine has been reduced in size, weight thus

making it easy to transport from one place to another in case of emergency or usual

need.

2. Accessibility: Technicians or engineers in some cases no longer have to run to fabri-

cation area if they have the machine available near them. Especially if the only fix

needed is drilling, having the machine accessible is a big saving of time and human

effort.

3. Storage Space: A problem most of the company faces is storage space. This design of

Portable Drill Press Machine has proven to have saved space in the workplace, as size

was reduced.

The Portable Drill Press Machine also exhibited a High Satisfactory rating on

Functionality, Efficiency and Effectiveness. It has worked accurately, simplified the

process, operated smoothly during the tests, and been easily manageable to users. The

Machine also worked appropriately according to function and features.

20 workpieces with varying materials and drill bit sizes delivered good results

during simulation and sample run.

Based on the testing and final result of the study, the following were recommended:

Functionality

1. Put know screws to all parts that can be assembled and dismantled for the purpose of

faster and easier mounting.

2. Include a motorized up-and-down movement or mechanism for additional safety pur-

pose.

3. Place a motor speed controller to control speed of the motor. Tapping process will

also be easier to do if the speed of motor is controllable.

4. To measure the depth of the hole, measurement component is recommended.

5. To control the feed and the depth of the hole, additional adjuster stopper is recom-

mended.

Efficiency

6. Consider materials with low price value without compromising the quality of the Ma-

chine to save project cost.

7. Consider materials that are available in local hardware stores. This will save time in

purchasing whenever a spare part is needed for replacement.

Effectiveness

8. Install additional switch cover to prevent accidental power switching.
