SCSJ Eat103 Exam 2019

From the given information, Normal reaction, N = Mg = 80 x 9.81 = 784 N Static friction force, fs = μsN = 0.5 x 784 = 392 N For the crate to start sliding, the towing force P must be equal to or greater than the static friction force. Hence, the minimum towing force required is 392 N. (b) Magnitude of towing force P that is needed to keep the crate sliding at a constant speed.

QUESTION 4

Fig. Q4

The two blocks in Fig.Q4 are moving from rest. The horizontal plane and the pulley are
frictionless. Two cords are used, which are cord ACD (T1), and cord CB (T2). The pulley C
and pulley D are assumed to be of negligible mass, therefore at pulley C,
T 2−2 T 1=0

1
a B= a A
2

(a) By using Newton’s second law, expressed T1 in term of aA.

(4 Marks)
(b) By using Newton’s second law, expressed T2 in term of aA.
(4 Marks)
(c) By using expressions provided, and using expressions from (a) and (b), find acceleration
