➢ Title of Textbook/LM to Study: Mathematics 10 Learner’s Material
➢ Chapter: _8 Pages: _383 – 391 Topic: Measures of Position for Grouped Data
➢ Objectives: To solve problems involving measures of position for grouped data.

Let Us Discover

This Simplified Self-learning Module (SSLM) will help you recognize and understand
real-life problems that can be represented using the concepts of measures of position and
apply these concepts in making decisions based on the statistical solutions obtained in the
given set of grouped data.

Steps in Computing the 𝒌𝒕𝒉 Quantile in Grouped Data:

1. Complete the table by determining the lower boundaries and cumulative frequency.
𝑘𝑛 𝑘𝑛 𝑘𝑛
2. Compute for , , 𝑜𝑟 in the case of percentile, decile, and quartile, respectively.
100 10 4
𝑘𝑛 𝑡ℎ 𝑘𝑛 𝑡ℎ 𝑘𝑛 𝑡ℎ
3. Locate the class interval that contains the (100) , ( 10 ) , 𝑜𝑟 ( 4 ) score, value, or
datum in the set.
4. Get the class interval’s lower boundary (𝐿𝐵), its frequency (𝑓𝑄𝑘 ), and the cumulative
frequency of the class that preceded this (𝑐𝑓𝑏 ).
5. Compute for the 𝑘 𝑡ℎ quantile using the formula:
𝑘𝑁
−𝑐𝑓𝑏 Note:
For quartile, 𝑄𝑘 = 𝐿𝐵 + ( 4 𝑓 ) (𝑖) ➢ The lower boundary is found by
𝑄𝑘
𝑘𝑁 subtracting 0.5 units from
−𝑐𝑓𝑏 the lower class limit.
10
For decile, 𝐷𝑘 = 𝐿𝐵 + ( ) (𝑖)
𝑓𝐷𝑘 ➢ Less than cumulative frequency is
𝑘𝑁
−𝑐𝑓𝑏 obtained by adding successively the
For percentile, 𝑃𝑘 = 𝐿𝐵 + (100𝑓 ) (𝑖) frequencies of all the previous classes.
𝑃𝑘

6. Interpret the results.

Example 1. The following is a distribution of scores of Grade 10 students in their English test.
Calculate the 3rd quartile, 4th decile, and 85th percentile.

Solution: Complete the table.
Class Interval Lower Boundaries Less than cumulative
Frequency (𝑓)
Scores (𝐿𝐵) frequency (<cf)
46 – 50 11 45.5 45 𝑃85 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠
41 – 45 6 40.5 34 𝑄3 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠
36 – 40 9 35.5 28

31 – 35 7 30.5 19 𝐷4 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠
26 – 30 8 25.5 12
21 – 25 4 20.5 4
N = 45

a. 3rd quartile: 𝑘𝑁
𝑘𝑁 − 𝑐𝑓𝑏
𝑄3 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 4 𝑄3 = 𝐿𝐵 + ( 4 ) (𝑖) Therefore, 75% of
(3)(45) 𝑓𝑄𝑘 the students
𝑄3 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 4 have a score less
𝑸𝟑 𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔 = 𝟑𝟑. 𝟕𝟓 (3)(45) than or equal to
Given: 𝐿𝐵 = 40.5 − 28
𝑄3 = 40.5 + ( 4 ) (5) 45.29.
𝑁 = 45 6
𝑐𝑓𝑏 = 28
𝑓𝑄3 = 6 𝑸𝟑 = 𝟒𝟓. 𝟐𝟗
𝑖=5

b. 4th decile 𝑘𝑁
− 𝑐𝑓𝑏
𝑘𝑁 𝐷4 = 𝐿𝐵 + ( 10 ) (𝑖)
𝐷4 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 𝑓𝐷𝑘
10
(4)(45)
𝐷4 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 = (4)(45)
10 − 12
𝑫𝟒 𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔 = 𝟏𝟖 𝐷4 = 30.5 + ( 10 ) (5)
7
Given: 𝐿𝐵 = 30.5
𝑁 = 45 𝑫𝟒 = 𝟑𝟒. 𝟕𝟗
𝑐𝑓𝑏 = 12
𝑓𝐷4 = 7
𝑖=5
The 4th decile is equivalent to 40th percentile.
Therefore, 40% of the students got a score
less than or equal to 34.79.

c. 85th percentile 𝑘𝑁
𝑘𝑁 100 − 𝑐𝑓𝑏
𝑃85 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 𝑃85 = 𝐿𝐵 + ( ) (𝑖)
100 𝑓𝑃𝑘
(85)(45)
𝑃85 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 =
100 (85)(45)
𝑷𝟖𝟓 𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔 = 𝟑𝟖. 𝟐𝟓 − 34
𝑃85 = 45.5 + ( 100 ) (5)
11
Given: 𝐿𝐵 = 45.5
𝑁 = 45
𝑐𝑓𝑏 = 34 𝑷𝟖𝟓 = 𝟒𝟕. 𝟒𝟑
𝑓𝑃85 = 11 Therefore, 85% of the students got a score less than or equal
to 47.43. 𝑖=5
