Math10 Q4 Week 3-SSLM
Let Us Discover
This Simplified Self-learning Module (SSLM) will help you understand how to
interpret the following measures of position of ungrouped and grouped data after
identifying the position of a certain class interval or value.
Measures of Position give us a way to see where a certain data point or value
falls in a sample or distribution. It also gives us a range where a certain percentage of
the data fall. The common measures of position are quartiles, deciles and percentiles.
To interpret measures of position of ungrouped data: Generally, the data is
arranged from smallest to largest:
1. For quartile, Q1: the lowest 25% of numbers, Q2: between 25.1% and 50% (up
to the median) and Q3: 51% to 75% (above the median).
2. For decile, the 1st decile is the 10th percentile (P10). It means 10% of the data
is less than or equal to the value of P10 or D1, and so on.
3. For percentile, the first percentile (P1) separates the lowest 1% from the other
99%, the second percentile (P2) separates the lowest 2% from the other 98%,
and so on.
UNGROUPED DATA
Example 1:
Interpret the position of the third decile or D3, Q2, and P60 of the following test
scores of a random sample of ten students.
35,42, 40, 28, 15, 23, 33, 20,18 and 30
integer.
Position of D3 = 3.3 ≈ 3
D3 is the 3rd element. Therefore, D3 = 20
Interpretation: 30 % of the 10 students or 3 students got a score less than or
equal to 20.
2
b. To find Q2 position, use the formula 4 (n + 1) and round off to the nearest
integer.
Position of Q2 = 5.5
You may use steps in interpolation to obtain the value.
Solution: Subtract the 5th data from the 6th data. 30-28= 2
Multiply the result by the decimal part obtained after subtracting, so
2(0.5) = 1.
Add the result 1, to the 5th data or smaller number, so 28 + 1= 29
Therefore, the value of Q2 = 29
Interpretation: 50% of the students got the score of less than or equal to 29,
and the remaining 50% got a score higher than 29 to 42.
(10+1)
c.) To find P60, use the formula k and round off to the nearest integer
100
Position of P60 = 6.6 = 7, therefore the value is 33.
Interpretation: 70% of the students got the score of less than or equal to 33
and the remaining 30% got a score higher than 33.
GROUPED DATA
Example 2. Interpret the measures of position D6, Q1, and P40 of the given grouped
data on the Mathematics test scores of 50 students.
Class Interval Frequency Lower Less than
Scores (f) Boundaries Cumulative
(LB) Frequency(<cf)
46 - 50 4 45.5 50
41- 45 8 40.5 46
36 - 40 11 35.5 38
31 - 35 9 30.5 27
26 - 30 12 25.5 18
21 - 25 6 20.5 6
1. D6 = 36.86. The D6 class is the class interval 36-40.
Interpretation: 60% of the students got a score less than or equal to 36.86
2. Q1 = 28.21. The Q1 class is the class interval 26-30.
Interpretation: 25% of the students have a score less than or equal to 28.21.
3. P40 = 31.61. The P40 class is the class interval 31-35.
Interpretation: 40% of the students have a score less than or equal to 31.61
Problem 1:
Mrs. Marasigan is a veterinarian. One morning, she asked her secretary to
record the service time for 15 customers in minutes. Given the value of 2 nd decile
and 3rd quartile, interpret each value.
17, 20, 25, 28,28, 32, 35, 37, 46, 47, 52, 55, 55, 56,60
1. D2 = 3.2 D2 is the third element, Therefore, D2 = 25.
It means that 20% of the customers’ service time is less than or equal to 25 minutes
and the remaining 80% customers’ time is higher than 25 minutes.
2. Q3 = 12 Q3 is the 12th element. Therefore, Q3 = 55. It means that 75% of the
customers’ service time is ____________________________________
Problem 2:
Given the value of D4, and P80, interpret its position.
Daily allowance of 60 students
Class interval f <cf LB
81-90 7 60 80.5
71-80 10 53 70.5
61-70 15 43 60.5
51-60 4 28 50.5
41-50 12 24 40.5
31-40 6 12 30.5
21-30 3 6 20.5
11-20 2 3 10.5
1-10 1 1 0.5
1. D4 = 40.5 The D4 class is the class interval 41- 50. It means that 40% of the
students have a daily allowance of less than or equal to 41- 50 pesos
2. P80 = 75.5 The P80 is the class interval 71-80. It means that________________
Let Us Do
Let Us Apply
1. Flora is a secretary in one big company. Her salary belongs to the 7.5 th decile.
Should Flora be glad with her salary? Explain and interpret.
2. Anita and her little brother are both 62 inches tall. Anita’s height is in the 85 th
percentile for her age, and her brother is in the 90 th percentile. Who is taller for this
age? Explain.
3. Mr. John gave a test to his learners in Mathematics. The learners finished their test
in 35 minutes. This time is the 2.5th decile of the allotted time. What does it mean?
