I. Project Title:
PROJECT (ERCS)
Enhancing Reading Comprehension Skills in the New Normal among Kinder
to Grade 6 Pupils in San Fernando Elementary School Santa Cruz, Zambales.

II. Introduction/ Abstract:

Teaching in Kinder to Grade 6 demands special attention and focus because this is the new normal
time. Before the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). We prefix what we say with the 21 st century.
“We used to say or write 21 st Century teaching, 21st Century learning, 21st century knowledge and skills, defining
these as the 21st century competencies or most essential competencies such as critical teaching, communication,
collaboration and creativity. However, with the coronavirus pandemic, we have a new catchword. The new normal.
The Oxford Dictionary defines catchword as “a briefly popular or fashionable word or phrase used to encapsulate a
particular concept. So what is the concept embracing the new normal? It is defined as a previously, unfamiliar or a
typical situation that has become standard, usual or expected. What has become normal? The lockdowns,
quarantines, facemasks, washing hands, taking vitamins and nutrient-rich food to nurture health, covering a
coughing mouth and sneezing nose, physical distancing but just like what our president and education secretary
said education must continue as long as we follow all the protocols for our own safety.

In this case it is also expected that Kinder to Grade 6 pupils must be able to construct simple
sentences, spell word and understand what they read for all we know that without comprehension a pupils is still
considered to be a non-reader. Kinder to Grade 1 pupil must be able to recognize the letters of the alphabet, read
CVC words and etc.
All the teachers then must have some method, strategies and interventions to at least lessen the
number of pupils who have difficulties in reading. With a big number of non-reader and slow reader, I was forced
to think of some ways on how to help these pupils. Some of these children need a thorough reinforcement in order
to improve the reading abilities and comprehension of all the concerned pupils. With all the changes in the
educational system where in no face to face is allowed it is such a big task and challenge to the teachers on how to
help the children to cope up with the new normal situations. With the mission and vision of our school San
Fernando Elementary School no one among the pupils can read and comprehend fast but what about those children
who belongs to a poor family who could not afford to pay for tutors or those children that are being neglected by
their parents to teach their children, those parents who did not finished their studies cannot read, write and
comprehend. How can we help those children? Those instances make the life of the teacher hard enough cause they
have to shoulder all the responsibilities when it comes to their learning problems.

The Department of Education try to help the teachers by having webinars and other related workshops to
keep teachers abreast of all the changes in the new normal and learning delivery modalities that are being applied
and implemented.

III. Statement of the Problem:

1. State and discover some information that would help in improving the reading abilities/ reading

2. How can teachers teach better in this pandemic times, where in no face to face is allowed.

3. What can teachers contribute in the learning and teaching process?

IV. Hypothesis:

Children with reading difficulties and poor comprehension show less interest in learning the lesson.
Teachers concern has to make some remediation and intervention to be able to solve the problem.

V. Significance of the Study:

The purpose of this study is to discover and share some ways on how to improve reading abilities and
comprehension of Kinder to Grade 6 pupils in San Fernando Elementary School. It also suggest some strategies
and intervention on how to enhance the reading habits of the children amidst this pandemic times.

VI. Definition of Terms:

Enhance - Increase, improve, elevate, heighten

Pupils – Children in Elementary
Attention - Focus
Remediation - Treatment
Intervention - Mediation

Parent - Guardian
Non- readers – Not able to read
Comprehension - Understand or comprehend

VII. Participants:

Most of the pupils in Kinder to Grade 6 this year have some difficulty in reading that hinders their
teaching-learning process. This time of pandemic, the teachers and parents were burdened on how to help the
pupils overcome this problem. This is to the main reason why the teacher researcher was challenge to have some
studies and discover some interventions that would help the parent and teacher facilitate easier learning among the
pupils. The age bracket of 6 y/o to 12 y/o respectively. In this age of the pupils normally tends to be more
aggressive, creative and eager to explore and ready to absorb a lot of knowledge if equipped with the ability to read
and comprehend. This group of pupils are the focus of study that belongs to San Fernando Elementary School with
