BEADED DRAGONFLY SET – JEWELLERY MAKING TUTORIAL
Designed by: Paula Ziemska
Difficulty: Beginner
Rating:
Together with Paula Ziemska, we invite you to a jewellery making tutorial for beginners. Paula
will show you how to make a dragonfly from beads, which will be the main element of the
necklace and earrings. Insect motifs have not gone out of fashion for some time, and you can
easily conjure up such a set yourself. To work!
Welcome everyone to my little tutorial. Inspired by the delicacy of Indian summer (heather's,
butterflies, dragonflies, cobwebs and this wonderful autumn sun!) I will present you a way to
make simple bead dragonflies that will create earrings and a subtle pendant. Paula xx
Materials required:
Beading Thread - I used Beadsmith S-lon AA Tex 35
Needle - John James 10/13
Firepolish Beads - crystals in size 3 and 4mm (FP)
CzechMates™ - (CZD)
TOHO seed beads - in sizes 8/0 and 11/0 (TH)
Ear Wires - open hooks e.g. made of stainless steel
Jump Rings - 4mm open wheels, e.g. made of surgical steel
Chain - 2.5 x 2mm armor
Charm - I used a decorative filigree pendant with a butterfly
Tools - sharp scissors and pliers
Remember that the delicate colours and choice of charm presented in this tutorial are only a
suggestion, and you can conjure up your set from completely different beads. The effect you get
can be completely different, and at the same time unique. Well, let's do it! It's time to find out
how to make a dragonfly from beads :)
STEP 1
To begin with, we will prepare the dragonfly. Cut about 40 cm of thread and thread it on a
needle.
Pick up: 1 x TH 11/0, 2 x FP 3mm, 4 x FP 4mm, 2 x CZD, 1 x FP 4mm and 1 x TH 8/0.
STEP 2
Skip the TH 8/0 and pass directly into the 4mm FP bead. Pick up 2 x CZD and pass the needle
through all the FP beads.
STEP 3
Pass up through the TH 11/0 bead.
STEP 4
The dragonfly has already taken shape (right? Simple?). Now you just need to stabilise it a
little. For this, we re-enforce our needlework by passing through all the beads twice more.
STEP 5
Finally, we secure and cut off excess threads. The dragonfly is ready and now you need to
connect it to the necklace.
STEP 6
This type of necklace will be regulated by its length alone. We attach a link with a pendant to
one end.
STEP 7
Then we put the other end through part of our filigree.
STEP 8
Put on the necklace and go to the mirror. In front of the mirror we select the appropriate chain
length (remember that it must pass freely through the head!) and cut off any excess.
STEP 9
At the other end of the necklace we install a link with our dragonfly.
STEP 10
Now it's time for earrings. Follow steps 1 to 5 and make two more dragonflies and mount on
jump rings.
STEP 11
Attach the dragonflies to the earwires with the jump rings just added and your set is complete.
STEP 12
Here you have another example of jewellery in which I used the dragonfly theme :). Be sure
to let us know how you liked this jewellery making tutorial, and if you use our inspiration.
