Science Unit 1

This document provides information about science unit 1. It discusses how scientists use different methods of scientific inquiry like research and observation. It also describes how the human skeleton is made up of 206 bones that form the frame of the body and protect organs. The skeleton allows humans to move and grow. It notes humans and other vertebrates have skeletons while invertebrates do not. The document also gives an overview of different types of medicines and how they work to treat illnesses and prevent disease.

 Scientists use different types of scientific enquiry to help them find the answers.
Research
Fair testing
Observing over time
Identifying and classifying
Pattern seeking
 Our skeletons are made of 206 bones.
 People and animals have the bones inside their bodies. These bones are joined together
to form a skeleton.
 Skeleton ( the bones inside our body that are joined together to form a frame)
 Skull ( the bones of the head)
 Spine ( the bones of the back)
 Rib cage (the bones of the chest)
 Hip ( the bone that joins the leg to the upper part of the body)
 Jaw ( the skull bone that moves when we eat , chew or talk)
 Femur (the top part of the leg)
 Tibia (the lower part of the leg)
 Humerus ( the arm bone between the shoulder and elbow)
 A model helps us understand how something works or see what something looks like
that we cannot see in real life.
 Our skeleton has four main jobs or functions.
1. Skeletons protect
2. Skeletons give shape
3. Skeletons allow us move
4. Skeletons help us grow
 The parts inside our bodies are called organs.
 Our skeletons protect the main organs of our bodies.
 The skeleton forms a frame that supports and gives the body its shape.
 Our skeleton helps us to walk , run and move in lots of different ways.
 We can move because there are muscles joined to bones of the skeleton.
 We grow and get bigger because our skeletons grow.
 Muscles cover the skeleton and give your shape that you have.
 Muscles work by pulling on bones.
 Muscles work in pairs.
 When one muscle in a pair contracts , the other muscle in the pair relaxes.
 Muscles get shorter and fatter when they contract.
 Muscles get longer and thinner when they relax.

Science Unit 1

 Animals with skeletons inside their bodies are called vertebrates.( with a backbone)
 We can sort vertebrates into five groups.
1. Fish ( Fish have fins instead of arms and legs and are covered with scales.)
2. Amphibians ( Amphibians are covered with a smooth , wet skin. Eg. Frog)
3. Reptiles ( Reptiles are covered with dry scales .eg snakes , lizards , tortoise )
4. Birds ( Birds are covered with feathers and have wings instead of arms. )
5. Mammals (Mammals are covered with hair or fur )
 Animals with no bones are called invertebrates.
 The hard skins or shells on the outside of the bodies of some invertebrates are called
exoskeleton.
 We take medicines to help make us better when we have an illness.
 Medicines stop and prevent us from getting ill.
 All medicines come with instructions and need to follow the instructions on the
medicine label.
 Instruction (information that tells us how to do something)
 We can take medicines as injections and these injections are called vaccinations.
 Vaccination ( injections or other medicines that stop us from getting a disease)
 We breathe in medicines from inhalers for asthma and other breathing problems.
 We use cream and ointments to stop insect bites itching and for skin problems.
 An infectious disease is a disease that is caused by very tiny living things we call
germs.
 Infectious diseases (a disease that is caused by germs)
 Germ ( very tiny living things that can cause diseases)
 People , animals and plants can all have infectious diseases.
 Infect (when the germs get into your body and make you ill)
