WORK IMMERSION AS ONE OF THE SALIENT FEATURES IN K-12

CURRICULUM

K-12 Curriculum was implemented to all schools in the year 2016. The main reason of
shifting the 10 year curriculum to K-12 curriculum is because of the lack of practical subjects
that could aid students after they graduated from college in the previous curriculum and so in this
current curriculum, they added more practical subjects to prepare the students for the work
environment which includes work immersion as one of the programs in the K-12 Curriculum that
involves hands-on experience or work simulation in which learners can apply their competencies
and acquired knowledge relevant to their track. Additionally, students are able to proceed to
workplace after the graduation of senior high school without college in this curriculum but it
depends on the workplace if it requires a college degree or not. The Work Immersion subject
covers on the procedure of job application, work ethics and simulation. This subject is designed
for students to be prepared for the work environment necessary in their general track.

The rationale of work immersion is to train the students to be ethical and the values of
work that is necessary in their work of field. The goal of this immersion is to exposed the
students to the environment of the workplace for them to be familiarize the flow in the
workplace; what do the workers do in the workplace, the culture of the place, and how they deal
with their works, problems and co-workers. This subject provides employment situations to teach
the students protocols of different scenarios in the workplace such as the disagreement between
the co-workers or officers, client-worker conflicts, etc. It even provides simulations to that help
students on how to deal with interviews during the job applications.

This subject applies to all senior high schools that are operated by DepEd department,
Private institutes and government, and Technical - Vocational institutes.

The objective of Work Immersion subject is to help students develop the technical
knowledge and skills necessary to help making decision whether to proceed to college or to job
employment and survive in the workplace. Through the exposure in the work environment, the
students should have gained the insights of different situations and improved their skills
applicable to the workplace such as communication, social and technical skills used in the
workplace. With this subject, the students should be familiarized on what to do in the workplace.
Work immersion is guides all students to be a good worker in the workplace through
exposure of situations and work environment. I always fear in the future that after I graduated, I
have no idea on what to do next and how to survive in the workplace. I don’t even know the
requirements of getting in the job; do I need a certain permit for me to get in the job? If so, how
do I get it? I have so many questions when it comes to job application and what does work
environment feels like until work immersion subject has recently introduced to me. With this
subject, I’ll be able to know how to be good at interviews, what workplace feels like, how to deal
with conflicts with clients and co-workers and technical conflicts in work. After I knew things
about this subject, my anxiety about the future has now relieved and I can feel the confidence
that I am prepared for the job thanks to work immersion subject.
