DISCUSSION 1
SONG
A. DEFINITION
A song is a beautifully arranged collection of words sung to musical accompaniment. The
song is based on a musical composition and has a rhythm and tempo so that the listener feels
immersed in the meaning of the song.
B. PURPOSE
The song is created by a songwriter or sung by a singer whose purpose is to convey a message
and express what is felt and seen by the songwriter or singer of the song.
C. STRUCTURE
The song is created by a songwriter or sung by a singer whose purpose is to convey a message
and express what is felt and seen by the songwriter or singer of the song.
a. Intro
The term intro is an abbreviation of introduction or introduction. It can be understood if
the structure of this song plays a role in opening and providing an introduction to the color
of the song presented by the musicians through the song.
b. Verse
For one part of the structure of this song, you may be more familiar with the term stanza.
Verse is part of the structure of the song that serves to connect the intro as well as pull the
songwriting back into the main theme. As you know, there are terms first, second, and third
stanzas.
c. Bridge
After the verse or stanza, there is a bridge that is present in the song structure called
bridge. In the realm of pop music, this part of the song structure serves to bridge the shift in
song composition. For example, from verse to chorus or chorus and vice versa. Technically,
bridges are usually composed with the same basic note as the verse.
d. Pre-chorus
Functionally, the pre chorus in the song structure is a direct bridge that draws the
composition to the chorus or chorus. However, unlike the bridge, the pre chorus usually has
less rhythm, in order to give an instant impact to get into the chorus.
e. Chorus/Ref
Chorus or chorus is part of the structure of a song that is usually made with an attention-
grabbing composition. In the writing process, this part of the song structure is usually useful
as pinned the emotions the core of the theme or story raised. Not only the composition of the
tone that managed to attract attention, the chorus or chorus as the structure of the song also
that peaked so that the listeners could know what the musician was trying to convey clearly.
f. Interlude
Apart from the bridge and the pre chorus, there are other parts of the song structure that
act as bridges. This section is known as the interlude. One significant difference from the
interlude and the two parts of the previous song structure is, the interlude only contains
the composition of the notes of the instrument being played without the presence of
vocals.
g. Coda
Coda is the closing part of the song. However, that doesn't mean coda is the end of the
song's structure. Coda usually contains a note or verse used to close. The composition of
the tone and the lyrics are taken from the bridge or pre-chorus. But not infrequently also
the end of the song is spent with only coda.
h. Outro
After the new coda entered outro. If the intro is the introduction, then the outro is the end
of a song. The presence of this outro is used so that the song does not sound awkward
when it is closed with the swinging and directing of the instrument playing to complete
the song as a whole
D. LANGUAGE FEATURES
Imagery
Images describe feelings and emotions. A song usually tries to describe how the writer
feels.
Rhythm
The rhythm here is used to create the mood. For example, if we are sad and listen to a
song with a slow rhythm, we will get carried away with the song. So, rhythm creates mood.
