and Materials: Meter rules, vernier calipers, micrometer screw gauge, beam balance, electronic balance, a piece of copper wire, pencil, hair, and teaspoon of sand. Activity 1: Measuring length Procedures: 1. The diameter of a pencil, piece of copper wire, and a strand of your own hair were measured by using the meter rule, vernier caliper and micrometer screw- gauge. 2. Measurements were repeated. 3. Results were tabulated. Mastery of Knowledge and Skill Questions: 1. Of the three measuring instruments used to measure the length, which is the most precise? Which is the most accurate? Meter rule is the most precise measuring instrument of the three while micrometer screw-gauge is the most accurate. 2. If a student use a meter rule to measure the thickness of an object, it is not realistic for him to record the reading as 4.32 cm. Explain why? The meter rule scale is not sensitive up to two decimal points to get such reading. The possible reading should be 4.3. 3. What instrument would you use to measure the thickness of a piece of a paper? Explain? Micrometer screw-gauge is the most suitable one because it can measure very small reading. Measurement is accurate up to 0.01 mm Meter Ruler (cm) Pencil Piece of copper wire Strand of hair 0.6 Average : 0.6 0.6 0.6 0.2 Average: 0.2 0.2 0.2 Cannot be measure Vernier Caliper (cm) 0.79 Average: 0.80 0.80 0.80 0.28 Average: 0.28 0.28 0.28 Cannot be measure Micrometer screw gauge (mm) 7.22 Average: 7.20 7.18 7.22 1.65 Average: 1.66 1.66 1.66 0.08 Average: 0.08 0.08 0.08
Activity 2: Measuring mass Procedures: 1. The mass of a piece of pencil and a teaspoon of sand were measured by using the beam balance and the electronic balance.
2. Measurements were repeated. 3. Results were tabulated. Mastery of Knowledge and Skill Questions: 1. Of the two measuring instruments used to measure the mass, which is he most precise? Which is the most accurate? Explain. Balance beam mass is the most precise to measure mass because our data show little deviation among them. Electronic balance is the most accurate to measure mass as it recorded up to four decimal points. Our data also show how close the measurements to the actual value. 2. Name another balance which can be used to measure mass in everyday life. 3. What have you learnt from the above two activity? From this activity I am able to differentiate precision and accuracy. Before this I always get confused between both of them. Now I know that precision is the ability of the instrument to measure the quantity with little or no deviation among measurements. Accuracy is the how close the measurements made is close to the actual value. Besides that, I know which measuring is precise and accurate. Conclusion:
