Technical Application Note #48, Rev. 10

Subject: Triconex Safety System Boundary and Reviewed Devices

Affected Products
Triconex™ Tricon™, Tricon CX, Trident™, and Triconex General Purpose (Tri-GP) controllers

Introduction
This Technical Application Note (TAN) provides a summary of third-party products tested by, or with oversight
from, Schneider Electric® to show interoperability with Triconex products. The list of third-party products is
exemplary and is not intended to be all inclusive of hardware that is interoperable with Triconex products. The
scope of third-party products reviewed for interoperability includes those within the TÜV-approved safety
boundary as well as those outside the TÜV-approved safety boundary.
Triconex safety systems maximize the TÜV-approved safety boundary when used with TÜV-approved
Triconex External Termination Panels (ETPs) and Interface Cables. The use of non-Triconex-approved
cables and/or ETPs limits the TÜV safety certification boundary and potentially limits the ability of the logic
solver to respond to safety demands. Networking equipment is a black channel and outside the TÜV-
approved safety boundary.

Background
IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 define a programmable electronic Safety Instrumented System (SIS) as consisting
of sensors, logic solvers, and final control elements, as shown in this figure.

Logic Final
Sensors
Solver Elements

Figure 1 – Simplified SIS

Together, these elements implement Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) of the target Safety Integrity Level
(SIL). To implement a safety-certified SIF, the system designer must choose safety-certified loop elements,
including sensors, final elements, logic solvers, and other interconnecting components.

In addition to the components shown in Figure 1, a typical SIS consists of other components such as cables
and external termination panels. Figure 2 shows the SIS including these components, which are used to
connect the sensors and final elements to the logic solvers.

Certifications
• TÜV approves the use of Triconex ETPs and interconnecting cables with the Tricon, Tricon CX,
Trident, and Tri-GP Safety Logic Solvers within the boundary of the TÜV-Certified Safety System.
• TÜV certifies the use of the Tricon, Tricon CX, and Trident Safety Logic Solvers in up to SIL 3
applications with the TÜV-approved ETPs and interconnecting cables in accordance with IEC 61508.
• TÜV certifies the use of the Tri-GP Safety Logic Solver in up to SIL 2 applications with the TÜV-
approved ETPs and interconnecting cables in accordance with IEC 61508.
• Triconex ETPs are certified for electrical safety in full compliance with international standards by the
Canadian Standards Association (CSA). They are qualified for general use in North America and
other jurisdictions requiring compliance with these standards, as well as the European CE mark as
per the Low Voltage Directive.
• Triconex ETPs and interconnecting cables comply with the applicable IEC EMC standard (IEC 61326-
3-1, 2) which includes the European CE mark per the EMC directive.
• Tricon, Tricon CX, Trident, and Tri-GP ETPs that are approved for hazardous locations comply with
North American Class I, Division 2 and European ATEX Zone 2 requirements. Additionally, Tricon CX
ETPs that are approved for hazardous locations also comply with IECEx Zone 2 requirements.
The boundary of the TÜV-Certified Safety System extends up to the ETPs, including the Interface Cables, as
shown in Figure 2 below. The use of non-Triconex ETPs or cables, even those with some form of TÜV
approval which are not part of this certified system, may reduce the TÜV-Certified Safety System boundary.

Approved ETPs and Interface Cables are listed in the Field Termination Guide for Tricon Systems, the
Planning and Installation Guide for Trident Systems, the Planning and Installation Guide for Tri-GP Systems,
and the Tricon CX Addendum to Tricon User Guides which are available on the Global Customer Support
(GCS) website.
Schneider Electric in Lake Forest, California controls the design, configuration management, supply chain
management, and quality assurance for Triconex ETPs and cable assemblies, as well as sourcing of
approved ETPs and Interface Cables.

Use of Unapproved Components

System component selection and safety standards compliance are the responsibility of the system integrator.
The use of non-Triconex cables and ETPs can potentially have a negative impact on compliance with the
applicable safety standards and the availability of the safety system. The use of non-Triconex-approved
equipment should be carefully evaluated before use.
See Appendix A for a list of devices that have been reviewed by the company and may be appropriate for
some applications.

Conclusion
The boundary of the safety system includes the ETPs and Interface Cables. To maximize the TÜV-approved
boundary, approved ETPs and cables must be used with the Tricon, Tricon CX, Trident, or Tri-GP Safety
Logic Solver. Non-Triconex ETPs and cables may be appropriate in some installations. Networking equipment
is outside the TÜV-approved safety boundary.
If you have any questions regarding this Technical Application Note, contact your regional support office or
the Global Customer Support (GCS) Center.

Appendix A – Reviewed Devices within Safety Boundary

After review and interoperability testing, the following third-party products used within the TÜV-approved
safety boundary were deemed compatible with Triconex products.

Appendix B – Reviewed Devices outside of Safety Boundary

After review and interoperability testing, the following third-party products used outside of the TÜV-approved
safety boundary were deemed compatible with Triconex products.
Refer to the manufacturer’s website for detailed product information, and installation and operation guidance.

Network Switches and Small Form-Factor Pluggables (SFPs)

Networking equipment is a black channel and outside the TÜV-approved safety boundary.
Refer to the Tricon CX Addendum to Tricon User Guides and Triconex System Security Reference Guide for
information on selecting and using networking equipment.
Network switch guidelines include:
• Switch Type: Managed
• Data Capacity: Average of 0.5Gbps per controller
• Virtual Local Area Network: VLAN support
• Ethernet Ports and Media: Chosen based on network architecture
• Certifications: IEC 62443-4-2 and hazardous locations, as required
For SFP modules, see the “Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) Requirements” section of the Tricon CX
Addendum to Tricon User Guides.
Network equipment used with Triconex products is to have similar or better performance to that of the
equipment summarized below, which has been reviewed and tested for interoperability.
